List Mgmt. End of Year List Changes

Personally, the only way I can really rationalise the Prestia 1 year contract deal with our ongoing rebuild (particular midfield rebuild) is if we are going to trade 1 of Hopper or Taranto, and then look to pick up another midfielder in the 22-25 age bracket.

Some of the suggestions in here have us delisting 8-10 players :sadv1:

****n tops, cant wait to replace them with picks 796 onwards FFS

We will make a few changes but nothing crazy IMO.

Blight to WC
Bauer delisted
Colina delisted
SMith probably delisted
Kmac probably retire
Kosi delisted

The above is maximum IMO.

It’s a tough one. This looks about right but we run the risk of needing to make too many list changes at the end of 2026.

We’ll likely have 3 retirements assuming Nank and Vlastuin play on. Then we’ll have the following players coming out of contract with a question over their future due to either form or injury…

Lefau, Young, Dow, Sonsie, Gray, Green, Trezise, Gibcus, Clarke, MRJ, Fawcett. Ryan is also a question mark despite having a contract.

If things go well we might only see 1-3 of these players out the door but there is as much chance 4+ need to be moved on.

I don’t love the idea of making more than 6 changes in 2026 as it could push us back in the rebuild timeline, especially if that number is closer to 10.

Looking further at the players in that group still out of contract we basically have to assess whether they are likely to be worth keeping in 2027 not just 2026.

Young is a bit of a no-brainer. Shown he is AFL standard since returning from injury and good to have around with uncertainty around Gibcus + the ability to move Balta around the ground.

Gray has shown potential and could be a decent back-up and/or Broad type replacement but durability is a concern. He’s probably one we can take the risk on because we already have a lot of depth in defence.

Dow and Sonsie are the two big question marks for me. Both have shown slight improvement this year but have really only got consecutive AFL games due to our injuries. They both have clear deficiencies and a lack of a genuine AFL position. Should we really expect them to improve all that much in 2026 and if they don’t there would be virtually no reason to keep them on our list in 2027.

I feel like they will be given another year but I find it interesting neither has been re-signed, especially Dow (due to being out for the season). They may both be at risk of being delisted if player recruitment opportunities present themselves in the off-season.

I see this, imo Brown and Gray are Vlastuin and Broad replacements. Gray is a Broad carbon copy and Brown is showing the sort of reading of the play and courage to stand in the hole and take a mark that Nick made a career of.

Keeping Lefau is a no-brainer for me. Averages 1.4 goals a game off only 11 matches (i didn't count this year a he came off early). That's good depth at worst if he can get on the park.

We're in an interesting position as we have a couple of risky but potentially high reward players on our list at the moment. While we're rebuilding we may as well keep them in case they come good, if not we replace them over then next few years as we accumulate picks.

As someone who has time to spare, I sometimes just find myself reading through some of Cal Twomey's previous phantom form guides just before the draft (what I basically view as the final order for the draft based on ability).

We took Dow at pick 21 in the draft in 2019, but what I find interesting is that Cal Twomey had Dow rated as basically the 34th best player in that draft (funnily, Carlton traded into pick 20 on the night to draft Sam Philp, who Cal Twomey had not given a rating to at all).

Twomey had Hugo Ralphsmith rated as the 31st player in the draft, and we drafted him at pick 46.

In his Phantom Form draft for 2019 (what he believes clubs will pick based on the information he gets from clubs), he had Ralphsmith going at pick 29, and Dow not going in the top 30.

Pretty easy if you ask me:

  • Delist Bauer, Colina, Smith, Sonsie and trade Blight.
  • McIntosh retires

That’s 5 spots on the main list.

Two top draft picks, Kellaway a player via trade and a SSP spot open to trial some sliders

Who else from the Gold Coast Suns is coming out of contract?
Saw Rowell extended for two.
Davies had interest from Melbourne clubs.
At a cursory glance, looks like only Budarick is free.
How about their second ruck Ned Moyle?
Has been snubbed most of the year.

Signed a 4 year contract last year, if I'm not mistaken.
A shame if it is the case.
Has only played approx 8 games in the past two seasons.
Would be resentful of playing second fiddle to Witts.
We badly need to prepare a new ruck to cover for Nank's eventual retirement.

His top 10 is usually spot on due to his contacts with managers.
After that, it is just a chook lotto really.
Clubs keep things very tight to their chest and fair enough too.

I understand that for his Phantom Form Draft, but his Phantom Form Guides are usually a ranking of ability of draft prospects.

It's just something I find interesting when we look at the first round in particular.

The only thing missing for Gray is pace. He’s not slow but Broad is/was genuinely quick. At the end of the day we have Trainor, Gray and Gibcus who all could end up in that 3rd tall role.

How is that 5 spots on the main list?

Bauer, Colina & Blight are all rookies.. McIntosh, Smith and Sonsie frees up 3x spots, which allows Campbell to be elevated (has to be) + 2 picks in the draft.

We need minimum 1x more change on the main list or to delist Dow/Sonsie and re-rookie them

Send Fawcett and Clarke / Dow / Green to the rookie list if you have to

Massive error giving Prestia another year. Has been awful the last 4 weeks

Yeah have been a massive fan but his lack of effort is damning. Adds nothing in this sort of form. Even when he calls for the footy he is too slow to get away and just gives it back to whoever gave it to him this time under pressure

hopper and tt de list, prestia as well.
Theyre close to 2.5 mil a year combined.
We are weekest in the midfield so that is the first thing we need to change for next year.

honestly, this list are probably all list cloggers:
  • Tresize
  • Sonsie
  • Ross
  • Brown
  • Ralphsmith

People will have a crack at Brown, but he is neither a gun defender, interceptor or rebounder. He isn't improving because no one is coming for his spot. When they do, he will be gone.
Harsh on Brown… he’s been good this year. we need him to become the next Vlaustin. Agree with the other 4

That midfield is to similar either Taranto plays forward or one of him or Hopper has to go.
Trade Short, Hopper, Hugo,
Out
Prestia
Macca
Sonsie

Out: Sonsie, KMac, Kosi, Smith (from the Senior list), Blight and Bauer (rookie), Colina (Cat B).

They shouldn’t have extended Prestia, even though it was for him to be paid as the additional coach. Means we probably need to put a senior player on the rookie list - possibly Clarke or Green.
