AFL Club
Collingwood
Why do we not just do what the club said it wanted to do in the statement enforce the contract? keep him here next year, if he still wants to leave he is not a free agent so we can trade him out then.

He'll be un-contracted and could walk like Tippett/Ball. Brisbane will try use this to their advantage saying they'd be happy to wait another year and pick him up for far less. Of course it's a completely invalid argument on their behalf as anyone (although GCS are the only other realistic destination) could pick him before them, which means they'd have to bank on the fact they'd finish below GCS... Which is just poor management really.

Who cares we are going to get ****ed over either way. Brisbane know unless they have pick 1 next year they will not be able to draft Beams so they will have to play

*shrug* We shouldn't get /that/ screwed. We're not in a position to 'win' out of this, but I don't think it's going to be as bad as some are making it out to be. Quite frankly I never expected us to move up the ladder next year, and obviously this will do nothing to help that, but overall it's irrelevant to season 2015 as long as we manage to maintain a healthy base of senior players (which is where the real challenge is). Who those players are doesn't necessarily matter, because we won't go anywhere until a few kids step up to the elite level.

At the end of the day all that matters is winning premierships, and honestly unless we get seriously ****ed over by this somehow (which once again, I don't see happening) I don't see this having a massive impact on when our next Premiership will be delivered. Any bumps this creates will have more than enough time to be ironed out considering our current position.

If anything this is just proving the wake-up call required for the few supporters who saw us as a legitimate top-4 chance in 2014 and subsequently 2015.

Bit upset OP after the Scandles & Rumours thread? If its genuinely because his father is unwell, mean spirited to make him stay.

True. Off topic a bit but I see no reason that he needs to go to Brisbane. Gold Coast is half an hour away. If the reason is his old man he'll go to either. Bugger this playing with his brother crap if it doesn't give us the best return. Sure GC will be unstoppable, but they were always going to be a losing Beams will set us back anyway.

Or why don't we just let him go home to be with his sick Father, just like you could do if the situation arose?

I'd consider giving him as many months off the game as he needed. He could then return to the club. A gravely ill family member supersedes a job. The lack of perspective shown by some supporters is disappointing.

Dayne is a human being (a son, a brother) first, a Collingwood player second.

No it is not, if the list was intact it would be different, we are about to lose our second best player for what looks like a pick and a few chumps that is not a win.

Not sure if I'm welcome here but thought I'd chime in given my club is in a similar (albeit more scandalous) situation.

Given your current list position you're far better off letting him go and maximizing return for him. There's no point holding a player against his will (especially given his situation) if he is just going to walk for free the next year.

I really feel sorry for you guys and hope he changes his mind or the club finds a way to facilitate him spending time away from the club but staying on your list. Seeing Beams in any jumper other than Collingwood would just look weird.

The club needs to do what is in the best interest of a club as a whole not the player

...and it would probably make other players question why they would want to stay at Collingwood, or why a player would want to play at Collingwood if we can't help a player that is looking to leave on compassionate grounds.

I actually think you are demonstrating a lack of persepctive.

I would not get as many months off my job as I needed and then still have my job secure waiting for me.

I sympathise with him but in the real world such a thing would not happen.

The club needs to do what is right for both parties, not only the player.

....and if you weren't happy with that, you could leave

If I was unhappy that my employer wouldn't give me unlimited time off I work I could quit if I was not under contract.

Unfortunately for Beams he is under contract so he can't just leave. Which incidentally is the whole point of the OP.

I would lose a lot of respect for the club if they enforced the contract.

Football is just a game, this issue is bigger and more important than that. If the club can't convince him otherwise and he still wants to go he will go and if the club stupidly did use his contract against him he could walk out on the club and miss the whole year.

If I was in his exact situation and my old man had what his dad had and I wanted a trade interstate, if the club didn't do it and were being stupid about it I would probably retire and sit out the year. Spend a good year with him and then nominate for the draft the following year ad hope I make it to Brisbane if not end up playing for whoever. Money can't buy time with your Dad, you will only ever have one dad.

Luckily for Beams we are a great club and will end up doing what's best for both parties, unfortunately that me mean we will probably come out slightly worse from the trade. Circumstances like this happen.

Yes he can, there is nothing preventing him from walking

Jesus Christ.... The guy's Dad is sick and he wants to be with him and you're talking about this??
Football is just a game... Can we please remember this!!

You wouldn't get months off your job as you're most likely more easily replaceable (no offence meant). In the real world some people have more choice than others; just because we might not doesn't mean that others don't. Parental leave or unpaid long term carers leave is a reality.

Life is full of compromises. If an organisation like the CFC is faced with losing a key player like Beamer, it might pay to come up with a lateral solution.

EDIT:
Virgin boss Richard Branson to give staff unlimited leave

Very much agree with this. ANYONE with connections to the club please make sure Beams considers convincing his Dad to seek care in Melbourne (surely better than Qld - no offence intended, just based on Melbourne bigger than Brisbane for medical facilities). If Beams' Mum & sister are already here (albeit possibly also looking at going back to Qld) surely the Dad coming down here is not unrealistic? If it's about playing with his brother than surely easier to trade Claye to Pies?

Extended leave not a silly suggestion - at end of day Pies will look to do what is best for themselves and Beams. If offered a fair trade than losing nothing on the field or slight up or down grade is good outcome. If offered an unfair trade than losing Beams for a few months or a year might be better than that and we retain Beams' favour. Have him sign an extended contract for at least a year before the leave so we don't lose bargaining power. Anything is renegotiable.

What do you mean there is nothing stopping him from walking? Walking out of the club or AFL altogether?

I am easily replaceable but my career lasts longer than 15 years and my skills are more easily transferable.

Beams has restricted himself to 2 possible destinations.

I have no problem with a lateral solution. But the solution has to work for both parties short and long term.

We can do that but doing that we would only get a 1st Round Pick for him .

We don’t know where that be and we could get extra then that pick IF we trade him
