... is this something people are going to have to talk about?

Umpiring this series has not been good, and it's affected the player's confidence in the umpires.

Nothing wrong with umpires giving the batsman not out when Hawkeye has it barely clipping the top of the bails. With margin of error that could be completely missing

Any obvious errors not overturned are because players stupidly burn reviews on balls missing by a mile.

But the umpires deserve some benefit, they’ve had a fair enforced break. Just look at how shit the AFL standard is with an unusual break!

Day 2 of the test series: Holder has to challenge 3 LBW's, all went against him. His batsman have to challenge 2, both were given out and overturned on review. Today, England have had how many 'Umpire's call' LBW's go in their favour, with one against. The one against hit a batsman who had stepped across their stumps, hit in front of middle after shooting low, and was cannoning into leg whatever Hawkeye said.

At what point do we talk about the fact that the change of emphasis from umpires making incorrect decisions to captains making bad reviews has placed the scrutiny away from where it should be? Captains are paid to manufacture tactics; they are not paid to be better umpires than the umpires.

Trusting the umpires to get it right has not worked for the Windies this series, at all. Why should they?

Post of the year.

I have said for a long time that drs and shitty umpiring in general has forced players to add a new skill - umpiring. They shouldn’t have to.

If Windies roll them here, England won't have nearly enough to show for Sibley and Stokes' dominance IMO. Particularly with plenty of rain forecast.

Been average from what Ive seen

They might be rusty from the break and need a few games to get their 'eye' in

Not making excuses for them but it may be a reason for the poor standard

England on top obviously but not nearly as on top as they should be
Yeah, if Windies can scrap a patient 250+ total with the rain forecast today, they're probably in a good position to retain the Trophy.

This England attack lacks the explosiveness to run through them on day 5 IMO.

Where does Stokes sit in the "best ever all-rounders" list?

Not purely on stats, but in the concept of his value to his team......

he’s climbing it all the time.

he suffers a bit from Cairns syndrome in that he’s not going to make many strong sides on one suit - Hadlee was a genuine bowling great, so was Khan, and considering where he played, so was Dev. Botham probably a tier below as a bowler but he DID take a stack of five-fers. Kallis was obviously a batting great. Pollock a superstar with the ball, Sobers with the bat, Miller with the ball.

like Cairns Stokes is very very balanced between the two disciplines though if you just watch him bat and don’t look at his average, he looks as good as anyone on the planet. He’s good enough to average 45

I haven't seen much of Dowrich before so don't know his history, but he looks very uneasy behind the stumps with messy glovework. Is he just struggling in English conditions?

He looks steady enough batting and his average is certainly fine enough for a keeper but it doesn't seem to be at a level that he's picked because of it. Is anyone else competing for the Windies keeper spot?

hope and de Silva can both keep, Hope keeps and opens in the odi side and has a stupendously good record so it doesn’t seem as though the dual responsibility effects him but simply batting in test matches is hard enough for him at the moment.

Dowrich was horrendous behind the stumps last time we were in England but had improved out of sight since, and he was fine in the first test. He really struggled in this innings though.

he has averaged 42 since the start of 2018 with the bat so he’s more than pulling his weight and it says a lot that he and Holder, at 7 and 8, were recently described as the West Indies engine room with the bat.
