Thanks S4P.

I think it's time to start to sure up the defence. I have been watching all of the champion key defenders taken off the table but thinking to myself whether, at the best of everyone I have seen, there has ever been a more dominant aerial presence at CHB than the best of the guy I am going to take with this pick. Sure, there are more rounded defenders, guys who are better on the lead, but when it comes to planting a giant frame (who also had a reasonable leap on him) in defence and having him cut the ball off, particularly in contested marking situations, which are what is actually valuable, he wipes the floor with everyone of the last 20 years other than Hooker and McGovern.

Big Jake "The Snake" Carlisle come on down!

KPD/KPF | 200cm and 106kg

151 games and 62 goals (85 (54) for Essendon and 66(8) for St Kilda) between 2010 and 2011.

Carlisle is another guy who I think football sort of lost to the supplements saga, someone who, like Ryder, we robbed of his best football. There are relatively reliable rumours that he has his troubles off field. I tend to wonder why it couldn't have been a more solid club that he chose to go to where he might have been able keep his shit together so that he could go on to play the consistently dominant footy that would have him on par with the modern great defenders (a feat which he had the ability to pull off).

At his best he could take a game apart forward for a whole game or just swinging to change momentum. The kid of 2012 to 2013 really had the world at his feet. I tend to think his 2014 was underrated and that his forward struggles were largely the result of stagnant ball movement, developed by Thompson to protect the inability of that list to run and run out a season.

Sorry, I don't know who's next.

Okay, I'm going multiple all-Australian, multiple premiership & Norm Smith medallist, giving a bit of agro to my forward line, Essendon Champion:

Paul Chapman

@boncer - you are up my man!

Could not believe he was still on the board and was waiting for someone to nab him.

Good tag mate.

I'll take the one season wonder Damian Cupido. His best was brief but brilliant.

Best part about Hibberd is that he combines the size, power and intensity of a Sheedy era defender, not to mention a supposed willingness to brawl in pubs, with dash and skill of a modern counter attacking player.

He would have been equally at home, and would have displaced someone, from the 1980s all the way to the current era.

I should have known he'd be a focus for you but then upsetting jmoo's plans was extremely satisfying.

It's an interesting one. I wanted a half back and a small forward with the double this time so I picked a guy who could conceivably play as a medium or small defender with great kicking skills.

I've gone from a pick I thought BrunoV would like in Cupidoll to a pick I know he'll dislike in Darcy Parish.

there’s a few players that I was struggling to split for this selection, so in the end I’ve gone for the one I thought most likely BrunoV would select.

Damien Hardwick

He was a great pick at #57 by Bipolar Bear you ****.

This pick caused me a bit more agonising than any other primarily because I hadn't looked up the records.

I always loved this man. He was possibly the most mercurial player of all, able to kick inverted torpedos and handle the ball as though it was an extension of his hand, an extension which was a second or 2 in the future. He could take screamers and genuinely do it all. I want to say he had a nice mean streak in him but I also don't want to celebrate what that likely represents. I suspect that, as was the case with Robbie Muir, it wasn't white line fever or the inability to control himself, which can sometimes be endearing, it was the justified retaliation to constant racial abuse. If I'm wrong, I'm happy for the man and it was just another part of his game.

As I said above, what sealed it for me was his record, a record which I am pleased to say was much more substantial than I thought it would be. He appears to have performed to the same level in the pre-West Cost WAFL, the pre-Adelaide SANFL and then the AFL.

Derek Kickett

half forward/wing/half back

259 professional games with 419 goals between 1984 and 1997. 38 (93) with West Perth, 32 (70) with Claremont, 25 (48) with Central Districts, 12 (12) with North Melbourne, 77 (94) with Essendon, 63 (73) with Sydney and 12(29) with Subiaco.
  • Leading Goal Kicker West Perth Football Club 1984
  • Claremont Premiership side 1987
  • R/Up Best & Fairest Claremont Football Club 1987
  • Record Number of Votes (46) Most in the Sandover Medal Count 1987
  • WA State of Origin player x 8 (2x Graham Moss medallist as BOG)
He still holds that record in the Sandover Meal which was 'won' by some spooge with 30 votes who didn't have the humility to hand DK the medal.

As I said above, the full weight of Kickett's record really makes him something much closer to a legend of the game who should be in the hall of fame. Seasons of between 2 to 3 goals a game in the WAFL and SANFL pre-AFL for a guy at 180cm is pretty special. Almost all of that converted to AFL where I recall he also played a lot in defence (which would explain why the goal average drops).

I probably look back on his career with Essendon with as much regret as I do for Neale Daniher. If only he had played in the 1993 premiership side he would likely have played out his days with Essendon where he belonged. I knew he played the 1990 GF but I was not aware he lasted all the way through to the 1996 GF (which was his last game).

He was a very special player.
