Len "Tiger" Bowe
Taken from Australianfootball.com
+++
Arguably one of the finest defenders in the pre-World War I VFL, Len 'Tiger' Bowe was a consistent tower of strength for Essendon despite hardly ever training. He arrived at the Same Old in 1907, and was a key factor in the Dons' re-emergence as a league power after several seasons of under-achievement. When Essendon made the 1908 Grand Final, Bowe, playing in a back pocket, was his side's best player in a nine-point loss to Carlton. He later starred on a half back flank as the Dons recorded consecutive Grand Final wins over Collingwood in 1911 and South Melbourne the following year. The 1912 season saw him selected to represent the VFL in two interstate matches against South Australia.

Had it not been for Essendon's temporary disbandment for two years during the war, Len Bowe might well have been the club's first player to record 200 VFL games. It would have been a fitting reward for a player who always played his football with consummate fairness, and who could always be relied on to produce his best form when it mattered most, such as in finals. As it was, when Bowe was forced to retire owing to an illness known as athlete's heart in 1920 he had amassed a total of 185 senior games, and kicked four goals. One imagines his having been a strong candidate for inclusion in Essendon's official 'Team of the Twentieth Century'.

Im gonna go with Tayte Pears. Does anyone else remember him destroying Bradshaw and Fevola in his earlier days? He'd do his work as a full back then come screaming down the field to get some pin point goal assists. I'm firmly of the belief that if he didn't have his foot injury issues, he would have been a very, very good player. You don't show what he did in his second season and not have "it". I'm sure he's an elite fire-fighter now.

No doubt. His problem wasn't even his form in the end. He was competing with a blend of Hooker, Hurley, Carlisle in the last year he played. We recruited Francis in 2015 and then Ridley in 2016. Hartley had just held down full back at the end of 2016 while Pears sat that year out due to suspension.

Just goes to show how fickle an AFL career can be. Do we even bring Francis or Ridley on to the list if Pears didn't get his foot injury? We might end up looking at another type of player.

Kyle Langford.

Sorry, no writeup as work is crazy busy. He adds some nice flexibility to the forward and mid group, and is finally starting to find some consistency.

Man, you took Bryan Wood over Tony Buhagiar and Greg Anderson?? Shame on you.

Nathan Lovett Murray.

190cm, 90 kg | utility

Played 145 for Essendon between 2004 and 2013 and kicked 73 goals.

A genuine utility who played wing, midfield, half back and half forward.

At 6'3 he had genuine power, speed and a very decent leap on him. He was also genuinely tough and adept at dishing out physical punishment which got him in trouble with the tribunal a few times.

Put it all together and he was the perfect sub because he could do a bit of everything.

He lacked polish which held him back a little.

An extremely useful player he probably finds a place in any team.

Last 30 to 50 games were quality AFL standard.

Took him a while to get there but he became a solid player.
yeah agree - his last season especially was very, very good - was really surprised he was delisted after that.

Agreed. Baffling to cut him when we did.

Admittedly I was a huge fan of his, though not enough to take him in this game. That decision is just as baffling as the one to cut him.

I do not recall what sort of list squeeze there was at the time but I do remember wondering whether something had happened which wasn't just about footy.

This is one I'm happy slipped though I doubt most will have heard of him (I certainly hadn't till I started this exercise)

Frank Maher
  • Essendon Premiership: 1923, 1924
  • Essendon Captain: 1925-1928 (77 games)
  • Essendon Vice-Captain: 1924
  • Essendon Best and Fairest: 1927
  • Victoria captain: 1927, 1928.
A man who started his football career whilst overseas serving in WW1, where he earned a Military Medal for Gallantry, Maher trained impressively with Carlton (F*** Carlton) in the pre-season of 1921 but when it was discovered he resided in Essendon's recruitment zone we snapped him up to make his debut at the age of 25.

He player 137 games for the Bombers from 1921 to 1928 with the last 118 of those coming consecutively before he put his hand up as not in form for the last round of 1928 and dropped himself. During that time he player in 2 flags, kicking 2 goal as Rover in the 1923 premiership before playing as a HFF kicking 4 goals in the 3 game round robin finals series of 1924. In 1925 he came third in the brownlow medal and in 1927 was captain coach of the Bombers as well as captaining them in 1928. During his time at Essendon he also represented Victoria on 9 occasions.

In 1929 he was lured from Essendon by Oakleigh to the VFA for the eye watering amount of 9 pounds a week which was double the basic wage at the time. In 1930 and 1931 he captain coached Oakleigh to 2 premierships both against Northcote.

At the end of 1931 he beat out a number of other contenders to become a non-playing coach of Fitzroy and lasted 2 seasons before they decided they wanted a playing coach, who amusingly only lasted 2 games, and Maher went back to Oakleigh. He then refused Fitzroy's advances throughout 1934 to quit on Oakleigh during the season and again rejected Fitzroy when he signed as Carlton coach in 1935 and 1936, his time at Carlton ended when he moved to Sydney for work.

From what I've read it appears he was an out and out gun and was rewarded with a place on the bench in our team of the century announced in 1997.
