Re: Essendon list changes

Not this again!

He plays on the opposition's 5th or 6th best forward most weeks and even then he's generally shown up. He has no awareness, has no vision, is a poor decision maker, is slow and has the turning circle of a mac truck.

I think Hocking is too slow for AFL football but I'd have him and McVeigh over Hank in the back pocket every day of the week. Says plenty about our back pocket depth when I say I'd have Hocking and McVeigh over Hank.

Slattery is a failed midfielder who plays in the backline, I've never jumped on a bagging bandwagon, I helped lead the parade.

Wow, if he is all this then he wouldnt even make the SANFL. Lets see what James Hird thinks of him hey? Looking forward to it.

He'd be a plodder at SANFL level just like he was in the VFL.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. I won't be changing my opinion of him and neither will you. He has a cult following, obviously I'm not one of his followers who believes his work simply goes unnoticed. It's always someone elses fault when he coughs it up or his direct opponent kicks a goal.

Cos that really worked well on Le Cras. Hocking is not a back pocket. Hank is.

Re: Essendon list changes

also i recently scrolled my best 22 and ended up having Jetta on the wing.....i like the idea of him having space and being instructed to be creative and try and run or bring the footy back through the corridoor whenever poss.

Thoughts??

Agree. But also with some time roving, as he did look dangerous at the centre clearances in the last couple of weeks.

Re: Essendon list changes

Ok good, a new topic.. i like it. I look forward to seeing jetta playing 70-80% midfield time in 2011. If he can have a huge pre-season and stay injury free, he is one that can really set us alight with his skill and speed. Maybe he can get his old mate ryder to pull his finger out and demonstrate that talent we know he has.

Re: Essendon list changes

I have no cause, other than wanting to see our best available combination of 22 players out there.

Wouldn't think Hank is the number 2 ranked tagger on our list though.

Fair enough call, bad choice of words on my part.

Who else is there? No one else bar Welsh is developed in that role. Howlett and NLM did "run with" jobs, but got a fair bit of the ball themselves and didn't really put a tight tag on. Slattery has tagged Kerr, Griffen, Didak etc. in the past.

Inside mid rotating forward for mine. GAJ '10 role.

Taggers

Welsh is no 1 tagger - His work is under appreciated.

Slattery showed some signs late in the year - But still behind Welsh.

Could Quinn be the wildcard - Did some decent jobs late in the season for Bendigo.

Re: Essendon list changes

Agree with House that Hocking's best role is half back pushing into the midfield.

This is where he played most of the year and picked up votes in the B and F.

yes a 'cult' following that includes AFL coaches that know a hell of a lot more about footy than you or I.

Not to mention several media commentators that I have heard give him a great wrap. Shane Crawford being the main one that pops to mind.

Re: Essendon list changes

so few changes to a list that only won 7 games this season the hawks delisted 11 and finished in the finals, i guess hird knows something about these players that we dont. With such a focus on getting the band back together at Essendon it makes me think list assessment has had little or know work done on it.

Two wins over St Kilda, plus victories over Hawthorn, Carlton and the Bulldogs suggests that the list is okay, with some tinkering to the midfield.

LOL at Hawthorn delisting 11 players - six of them were rookies. ;)

Travis Tuck will also be re-drafted, and Hooper doesn't have the commitment or attitude to play AFL (He walked out on them). So realistically Hawthorn have delisted three.

List assessment isn't controlled by just Hird. But you already knew that didn't you.

Still, I think it's a slightly better approach than the one taken by a team who had 6 wins who picked up fringe players during trade week and who is likely to pick up another fringe player in the PSD.

yes a 'cult' following that includes AFL coaches that know a hell of a lot more about footy than you or I.

Ricky Dyson, Courtney Johns, Daniel McAlister, Corey McGrath, Xav and Raph Clarke, Jordan McMahon etc etc etc were all considered afl standard for a number of years by some experts, and by some coaches that essentially do have a greater knowledge of the game than most.

There's no doubt a hundred more players i'm sure we all agree aren't much chop at this level, but are or were rated by numerous experts to be so......

......personally i don't think the argument that "at least some knowledgable people in footy (may be 5% for all we know) think he's up to it" is supremely flawed, whether it be made for Slatts or anybody else.

These are the same coaches that didn't think Michael Barlow was up to it for a number of years, are they not? This line of argument is complete BS. Why the hell have an Internet forum if everybody should agree with decision makers, who make very frequent and very large mistakes (this includes all clubs, not just EFC).

Re: Essendon list changes

Hopefully we can add Long to the list next season? Had an injury interrupted year last season, will he be in contention for senior selection at some stage in 2011?
Backline spot, yes; but more Dempsey's spot.
I'm not seeing him being that strong-bodied, hard at the contest type (ever). {Unless the contest is "skinniest man on the field", in which case he'll be very hard to beat}. And yes, every side needs them.

It's an interesting one.....whilst trying my best not to bag Slattery, he hasn't really shown us even once that he can tag well has he??

My memory might be off so feel free to correct, but as i recall
  • Didak played mostly hff with a few minutes here and there in the middle with Slatts following him, Didak still had a reasonable game but was kept on a leash by Hank.
  • Griffen carved him up it in the first quarter and a half before going off injured (i think???), and
  • tagging Kerr the last couple of years is essentially tagging a C grade mid who used to be awesome with Cousins and Judd around him.
Again, my memory isn't perfect but if he has shut down a good mid, by all means let me know (i've asked this before and got doughnuts).

For all i know Lonergan, Reimers, Jetta, Melksham, Myers, Zaharakis, Howlett, NLM, McVeigh and Welsh could all be better taggers than Slatts.....and they might not be.

In most cases i haven't seen enough of them or Slatts to say with confidence, although i certainly don't think Slatts has shown enough to lay claim to be our number 2 tagger as yet.

Welsh, McVeigh, NLM and Howlett have shown enough to suggest they're ahead of him in the pecking order thus far, but until i at least see Slatts have a decent crack at it, i am of the opinion that he doesn't have the physical attributes nor the footy brain/awareness to have much of an impact on an A grade mid......happy for him to prove me wrong if he gets a crack, but there are certainly others who are better equipt to be given more of a crack before him.

Re: Essendon list changes

Just a rumour floating around... Matthew Llyod ran a PB of the Tan recently........
Just putting it out there, not that I believe it.

I believe he may have ran a PB, Dont believe the return of the great man that has been implied.
