News Essendon list changes (Update: Neagle and Atkinson delisted)

this news really doesn't surprise me. I just listened to the podcast from on the couch 6/7/2010 following essendons big loss against Adelaide. Hird talks about neagle and houli. He says he does think jay is up to it, or isnt up to it just yet and said based on houli's starved chances he couldn't say whether he was good or not. It's obvious that hird wants his team to be hard working and if they aren't going to take it serious then there's the door. I honestly think jay can play but if he doesn't have the commitment his just taking up a spot on the list. Im also sick of reading of people complaining about houli, hird wanted him, he wanted out. We didn't trade him to upgrade our pick in the PSD. After it was revealed that we threw big money at cloke don't be surprised if we pick up a forward in the PSD, J. Anthony?

Did not see that coming!

I suspect this will allow us to retain either Still or T Slattery, or perhaps elevate one of Crameri or Silverlock.

Would prefer Silverlock on the senior list over anyone we would get at pick 80...

Interesting decision. Can't say I'm too disappointed but there are a few questions that need to be asked.

What happens to Neagle contract wise? Is he paid out in full if he isn't re-rookied?

Why did we not trade for Houli when we had the opportunity? Seems like poor list management to me.

Just curiously, did *you* know, in trade week, that in a couple of weeks, Neagle and Atko wouldn't have done the jobs expected of them?

Reckon anyone on the coaching panel could have seen the future like that?

If it comes out tomorrow the Watson is sleeping with Stantons missus- so we cut him- Is that poor list management because we could have picked up a pick that we didn't need- just in case? Or is it a case of individual players dropping the ball and the club taking the appropriate action.

Re: Essendon list changes

Correct, and the decision was made only recently, certainly not in time to accept a trade for Houli.

Would also give T Slattery and Still a chance for a reprieve (just me speculating).

At this stage, it looks like:

Senior List:
OUT: Atkinson, Neagle, Slattery, Still, Laycock, Houli
IN: Howlett, pick 8, pick 31, pick 48, pick 65, pick 82

Rookie List:
OUT: Bock, Marigliani, J Williams, Howlett
RETAINED: Crameri, Silverlock, Quinn
IN: Webster, Meli, pick 9, pick 26
Salivating at the prospects pick 82 will bring!!
Surely we can't bring Slattery or Still back on to the list if we removed them prior to the last list lodgement?

Perhaps John Anthony is quite a realistic prospect in the preseason draft now. Although WCE may well take him first.

BTW, my count gives us 1 additional rookie pick - 43, given Webster and Meli will not take regular rookie list spots

Hirdy was often critical about Neagle when he was commentating on Fox. Always questioned his work ethic and professionalism. There is no real suprise in this decision.

I really liked the look of Atkinson & was a bit surprised u guys let him go.He's a good big bodied rebounder with pace & a good kick - something I though u guys would have needed. I would have been expecting him to cement a spot in ur best 22 going fwd, yet no one here seems to care. Could someone tell me more? Is there something that I'm missing?

He plays a good game then a bad one then gets dropped.
And he's poxy on the defensive side.
26 and not clearly in the best side.

Turned up unfit for pre-season; got told it was back on the rookie list or nothing.

ttfn Atko.

Decision making skills were poor, not great defensively and evidently didn't work hard enough on the training track.

Anthony may well be gold coast bound - Magpies will get a compensation pick if they agree.

We may well pick up Neagle.... Delisting for the rookie list is a risky game

Neagle is a surprise but I think it's a good move. The kid had 5 years to prove he wanted an AFL career and he never took it by the horns. Perhaps this is the massive wake-up call he needed. We'll probably rookie list him as no longer club will touch him.

Has Houli being delisted? Is there any way to keep him on the list long enough to prevent him nominating for the ND, thereby forcing Richmond to use their PSD pick on him?

Neagle wasn't delisted for the rookie list. He was delisted and told he may be able to earn a spot on the rookie list.
If someone else takes him... Meh.

The rules were changed recently to say that all clubs had to delist players early enough to allow them to nominate for the ND.

anyone who is moaning that we should have taken the Houli pick needs to have a think about things.

We were chasing Cloke. Cloke didn't resign until after Trade Week. It was a gamble, it didn't pay off, shit happens.

This decision wasn't made until recently, when the players had had a crack at pre-season training

Stop whinging about poor list management if you can't see the bigger picture

Houli - Hird wan't in the job 5 minutes before Houli said he wanted to go. I don't think we could have pleased anybody in taking a 3rd or 4th round selection from Richmond at the time, because there are a few people that rate him and thought that an offer like that would have been way under value.

Beside him not attending training, Houli is still contracted to us until he is accepted by another team through draft. With our player management team not committing to anything, it allowed further time for negotiation, time to speak to the player and time for the new coach to offer reasons why Houli should be a required player at the club.

Fact is, he's played a handful of games, in and out of the first team as a fringe selection and basically unproven in senior AFL footy.

As it is, we now will lose Houli to Richmond for no value....but at least we had time to try to convince him back rather than not try at all.

Poor list management - I think a few people here have to face a bit of reality.

We finished well down in the bottom half of he comp in 2010 and with basically the same list (minus a few de-listings) for 2011.

I see the year as a definite learning period for club, players and coach where we may add another two games into the win column at best.

With the de-listing of Neagle and Atko, it sets the tone of the coach and the club, whilst setting a standard from basically day one of the tenure. No one in this current playing group will have any quips come the end of this season on where they stand and the development of the list come 2011/2012.

this time next year is where the wheeling and dealing will become interesting and meaningful.

The bigger picture is that it was silly to think that we were going to go into the national draft with only three picks.

You can argue against it all you want but at the end of the day Essendon got nothing from Houli even though pick 45 was on the table.
