Houli - Hird wan't in the job 5 minutes before Houli said he wanted to go. I don't think we could have pleased anybody in taking a 3rd or 4th round selection from Richmond at the time, because there are a few people that rate him and thought that an offer like that would have been way under value.
It became pretty clear that after Hird had sat down and talked to Houli that Houli wasn't going to change his mind. He thought he could get better opportunities else where and good on him. There was no point in holding on to him any longer as his mind was well and truly made up.

The bigger picture is that it was silly to think that we were going to go into the national draft with only three picks.

You can argue against it all you want but at the end of the day Essendon got nothing from Houli even though pick 45 was on the table.

In an already compromised draft- pick 45 is essentially nothing. Certainly nothing worth bragging/crying about.

Atkinson told the club via telephone that he wasnt committed. Anyone who complains about his delisting, need to direct thier thoughts to JA.

He was told that he had two weeks to train to get a contract. He then didnt turn up to training and rang the club to say that he didnt want to continue.

End of story.

It's good to see some people can see the logic behind these moves. I starting to get sick of reading people posting comments that just knock every move the club makes without any rational thought. FFS just get behind the club and support them, it's at the lowest point that the club needs our support the most.

There is a perception on forums that some players are better than how they actually perform or shown form. The coaching staff and list management team work with the players on a daily basis and have a much thorough understand of where exactly there at, so if they think they aren't up to scratch be happy with their decisions and support them

I tend to agree. At the time I didn't really care, because the club stated clearly that we would only be using the three picks, but we cornered ourselves there and now we're feeling it.

Agree. We need to keep faith, but a bit of constructive criticism doesn't hurt. I don't think anyone here is being outrageously negative.

Again, I've got a feeling about that 80-odd pick ... :D.

It's not too bad in here, it's the nuffys that post on the Essendon Facebook page that are the main offenders I'm referring to.

So our last live pick in the ND is in the 80s?

**** me that is poor management. Another reason why trade week is too early. Look at Mcphee last year, Houli/Bruce/Anthony this year, etc. Admittedly this is Essendon telling him to **** off, not the other way round (as per above examples), but still.

Surely Hird must've had an inkling about future delistings during trade week.

so in summary you think we shouldn't have chased Cloke but rather taken pick 45 just in case we had further delistings

anyone who is moaning that we should have taken the Houli pick needs to have a think about things.

We were chasing Cloke. Cloke didn't resign until after Trade Week. It was a gamble, it didn't pay off, shit happens.

This decision wasn't made until recently, when the players had had a crack at pre-season training

Stop whinging about poor list management if you can't see the bigger picture

Lance - we were no chance to get Cloke. It was a freakin pipe dream where all of the stars and planets would have had to align. If this is why we didn't trade Houli then we are in serious trouble because while it is nice to chase - we would have had to get past WC, Bris, and Rich all the time while Cloke has decalred he will not sign. As if they would be stupid enough to lock on to someone with a guy like Cloke in the ether.

In the end - this just reaks of poor list management. We should have takent the pick for Houli - bugger tyring to be cute. If we were going to flick blokes like Neagle and Atkinson, then stock up on picks that are better than a 5th rounder in a compromised draft or a 2nd rounder in a weak pre-season draft.

Exactly, that's the thing that makes the Hooley decision seem dumb to me in retrospect.

the decision to flick Neagle was only made this week after training had come back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it? Or should Neagle not have got a chance?

Say what you like, the club had a strategy to try and get a good player in Cloke, and obviously judged it worth the risk of missing out on pick 40 whateverthe****. You can say it's a pipe dream; does that mean we should never try and be audacious?

Meh, not fussed. Right decision and Hird is putting his foot down.

Neagle might get another chance by being rookied and needs to finally pull his finger out and make the transition from boy to man. He has enough talent but needs to find something inner. Highly unlikely but might be worth the punt in a list of 40. Who said he had no puppy fat a few years ago

We either use some late picks or PSD. Pick 50+ for Houli is no different to having pick 100.

Or are they naive to think Jay after how many years would actually get it? Let's face it - he has done nothing we did not expect - turn up unfit.

Atkinson giving up the ghost - perhaps if they guy had commitment issues we should have been discussing these sooner. A harder one I will admit.

And I will fly to Sydney and go tell Jen to drop her bpyfirend/fiance(?) and come and live with me. Shoudl I be audacious too?

Making decisions on a 1 in 1000 shot is not smart business.

True.... but isn't it better to let Houli go in the PSD so we get a look at another player potentially?

Is there really any point in having pick 50+ as opposed to 60+. Most clubs pass at that stage so if we target someone then we are likely to get them anyway.

Well we will have 10 more players to choose from - so the chance of having a player available that we want is higher.

The PSD is screwed - we knew it at trade week time. Playing funny buggers to take Richmond out of the equation is not really going to make a huge difference.

threy could grab Houli in the ND anaywya so it would make the whole game moot.
