i'm trying to compile a database for Footy Fanatic (amongst other things) and just posting the guys on your list in the order i believe to be the best players to the worst on your list.

Please feel free to comment on any players i have grossly out of position in terms of their rank, positions, D/O/B, State of Origin etc,. etc,.

also it would be good if you could tell me what guys have now made their debuts

I am also unaware of who are the veterans on any AFL list.

Also note I have players approximate salaries on here. If any of these are majorly off just let me know, and if any of you know how what guys are off contract at years end, or how long to some of the guys on the team are coming off contract it would be appreciated.

Also there was no information on the AFL web-site about the rookies outside of James Davies so it would be good if i can get some info about them.......

McVeigh should be top 20.

Fletch and Lucas above Mark Johnson.

Mercs is probably a bit high, i'd have Cupido ahead of him.

As for the salaries i can't work out where you got them from...Mercuri is meant to be on a lot more $$$, Allan and Murph are meant to be on the minimum, and perhaps Misiti too (or at least close to it). Hird is probably on more with his backloaded contract and i doubt Lucas is on so relatively little. Bolton probably on closer to $150k too with his new contract.

Hope i don't sound too critical, it's a big effort to work all that out, and i reckon the rankings are pretty good apart from what i've said.

doesn't bother me if people wanna be critical. I'm trying to get the most accurate database of AFL players i can, and given there's nearly 700 of them, not one person in Australia could do this without the help of others - particluarly salaries as these are all rough estimates on any particular rumours i've heard, or on their relative talents.

BTW, McVeigh hasnt played this year am i right??? why is that?? he's gotta be injured. I originally had him about 17-19th but when i saw he hadn't played this year and I couldn't find anything on him being injured i thought he may have slipped off the radar.....

He is back from a hamstring injury he sufferred early on against St.Kilda. He's only played less than a quarter this season, and is named for the Bendigo Bombers against Tasmania on Sunday. Hopefully he pulls up alright. Was in some great form last season.

I have also heard that Murphy is only on $50k or thereabouts. I would also expect that Lucas is on around $250k and I thought Lloyd had taken a pay cut at some stage?

Yeah i am pretty sure Alan and Murphy are on base salaries.

I would probably have Allan a little lower...hille, bullen, cupido and mcveigh all deserve to be higher than him at the moment. not too many complaints about the top ten, theres always going to be a few combinations but thats as good as any......oh and henneman should be knocked to the bottom of the page also.....if not off the page all together.

Just a question to all you folks:

The two Lovetts & a couple of other rookies in Wilson & Summers have all been praised and come next year I assume are wanted on the list.

Who will make way for them to be elevated, if all are, and who will make way for any drafting & trading?

Are both Mercs & Misiti going to retire? Will they dump Henno, Hunt & Davies? Who else do you think? Who do you reckon we will trade & will anyone want to leave like DJ did?

Essendon has two veterans - James Hird and Mark Mercuri. They are listed on the senior list however, not on the seperate veterans list so we only have 38 senior players.

Of our rookies the order of merit would be:

1. NLM - tall quick flanker, good high mark, good skills (though his kicking has been off the past couple)
2. Andrew Lovett - cousin of NLM. small, super quick flanker/pocket. Can also take a massive grab. Could be promoted soon.
3. James Davies - the deserved kick in the teeth seems to have worked a little with Davies working much harder on the track and performing better for Bendigo. But his form has dropped a bit again, and I think he'll find himself passed by Summers and Wilson soon.
4. Peter Summers - probably equal with Wilson at this point. Midfielder but capable of playing forward or back. On the way to a solid build, he's pretty calm in traffic.
5. Adrian Wilson - Strong, solidly built defender with excellent kicking skills. Just does the job generally, nothing specatular but very reliable.
6. Ben Cosgriff - hasn't done a huge amount that I've seen yet. Played FF as a junior but isn't quite tall enough for that in senior football and hasn't yet settled into a role.

Mercs has another year on the contract (so it expires at the end of the 2005 season).

Yep, but it would probably be a negotiated retirement and he'll get paid out a little (which would still go towards the salary cap). Hard to expect a bloke to walk away from something like $400k.

Other people have commented on rankings, so I'll leave them - Just on the positions, in Footy Fanatic terms, I'd be changing the following players:

D Solomon: B, M, F - he doesn't play the pockets often, but he does play both back and forward flanks.

D Rioli: F, B, M - been going into the midfield a fair bit recently.

J Murphy: Wing, F, F50 - he's better on the wing than as a forward.

D Hille: R, R, F - looks comfy on the forward line, moreso than most rucks.

A Henneman: B, B50, B - not a ruckman. Not even a little bit.

J Reynolds: F50, F, B - effective as a back flanker.

Mark McVeigh: B50, M, F - spends most of his time in the back pocket nowadays. Rated too lowly, incidentally.

T Richards: F50, F, F - most effective as a full-forward, unfortunately for him.

B Haynes: F, F50, M - more a forward, yes, but can certainly go into the midfield.

K Bradley: R, Wing, B - being groomed as a CHB.

J Laycock: F, F50, R - he's a forward that can go into the ruck, not the other way around.

You've done a fantastic job. There is no way I could have done even near half as well on any other club's players.
