For some off-season fun I'm proposing a draft of all Essendon players where posters get to name their best 23.

1,214 players have played for Essendon so entry is strictly capped at 52 posters.

Draft ordered will be a randomised snake order and of course each player can only be drafted once.

Once teams are drafted they'll be pitted against one another in series of polls until we have a winner.

I Select Russell Blew

A pacy wingman, Blew debuted for Essendon in 1960. In 1964 he finished second in the best and fairest awards and represented Victoria at interstate football. He was a premiership player with Essendon in 1962 and 1965.

Taking the little flanker Geoff "Goo" Gosper. Played on both the back and forward flank and in the guts at times. Tied for the Crighton Medal with my ruckman D. McKenzie in 1968.

Plonk him in the forward pocket to round out my starting 18.

Still can't believe Hugh Torney is still available. If I didn't already have two ruckmen he would be one of my next picks.

Max Crow

I liken him to what Jake Carlisle was like. Hands like buckets. Could play either end and pinch hit in the ruck. Also went to St Kilda but unlike Carlisle, won a BnF in his first year there. He was a real forward threat and won our goalkicking in ‘77. To highlight his marking, in 1978 he had a 5 week hot streak where he took 63 marks!

Tony Elshaug

Added some real class as a rover in our dominant mid-80s team. Also knew where the goals were and was a good player at Melbourne too, kicking goals in most games he played.

Crow and Elshaug are perfect versatile bench players to add.

Much of your team takes me back to when I was a wide eyed 9yo.

Hawker, Heard, Neagle, Merrett, Budgie, Watson, Williams, Elshaug -> the good times were going to last forever!

We are a similar vintage make. I became fully invested at the same time that Sheeds entered the club. Had vague memories of 79-80 but I was too young then to have much understanding of the players’ ability. It was the streak of 16 wins in ‘81 that got me excited about my team.

This poster was the first I had on my wall. All my early heroes are there (VanderHaar, N Daniher and Heard were absent but have their pics in the action shots).

There ya go, Justn Madden once had a beard!

My interest started peaking in 83.

I think Justin Madden’s beard is up now.

I reckon Pweter might’ve had his team saved ready to go for his next post.
Yeah this, was pre-loading ready for a plug and play (I hadn't added my pick though). Have edited.

Sorry folks!

Going back to the golden oldies for "The Butcher" Percy Ogden. One of the original great rovers, he captain-coached us and is one of our all time record holders in state representation. He will come off the bench to crack some heads.
