They're currently offloading containers to lighten it in the hope it will make it easier to free. Some commentators are suggesting it's still going to take weeks to sort this out.

Here's a novel approach ...

When they do finally get it unblocked all the ships that are stuck all stream towards their port of destination on mass and there is no where to dock and unload

Never knew this.

"It costs a container ship US$700,000 to go through the canal, which is just under A$1 million – and you thought toll roads were bad. The ships’ captains are delighted to pay it though, because they are carrying tens of millions of dollars worth of stuff and burn thousands of litres a of fuel each day, so getting there faster is well worth it."

Shipping is an expensive business

Mostly run by cartels

Is it time two channels are built?

it’s a little crazy it has been done, given the risks like this

Considering the billions the Eqyptians make from it every year you would think they could have built another by now to allow for two way traffic 24/7, increasing how much they make for the fees for passage.

EDIT: Scratch that it looks like they've already done that.

Obviously where the Evergreen is stuck is one of the places where they haven't yet built a second lane?

Especially given the nationalised it from the rightful owners

Slight technical hitch being the windlass is only rated for the dead weight of the anchor plus cable in the worst case scenario, anchor dropped in water too deep to reach the bottom. Dragging 220,000 tons sideways? Gravity is a bitch.

They can't back up other ships and try to pull it out, their screws will churn up the bottom and pump more sand underneath the ship, which is the last thing you want.

Once it breaks suction it *might* move a bit easier if they can keep it going.

I look forward to the youtube video in a few months showing us the engineering dramas they have to go through to shift the damn thing.

You need to get a 10 story crane to lift the boxes
You then need somewhere to put those boxes
Then hope it bobs up enough to spin it around

I reckon the just keep digging and get a a few more tugs in on both sides
Get one of those Island building dredges the Chinese used to dig a big enough pool to turn in

They'll look like dicks when they're 1000 miles south and there's a loud sucking sound as the Everwhatever is plucked out of the banks.

OTOH they could be prescient and be happily in Europe while the boys from Smit are still scratching their heads over how to get the ******* thing moved.

I wonder how many ships will be going through at once as soon as it is cleared?

On the turps for a few weeks in Capetown then up to Mauritius for a while if I was Skipper.
