West Coast are just proving that is rubbish. How good is Gaff?? Better than Shuey let me tell you!!!!!

what the hell are you on about gaff and shuey were both high picks 4 and 18. no one is suggesting anywhere that we dont use early picks.
mate your all over the shop.
wce took plenty of older players along with useing their early nd picks in their list build from 2000 thru to their premiership in 06.in fact from 94 when they won a premiership they traded most yrs until they won again in 06.they have been one of the better clubs over the yrs at combining both with an emphasis on youth and early picks in the nd.. no one is suggesting anything different.

what is being suggested is we will only tread water if we we only utilise the nd we improve the overall list we have to find more than 4 players each yr what is being suggested is we actually get rid of say mcguane who stinks up the place and has done so for yrs. we have astbury we grimes we have rance replace mcguane with a jamison just like carlton did from the vfl what is there to lose whats the worst that can happen we dont get an upgrade on a dud we lose nothing and we can do no harm as long as we still invest heavily in the nd especially with our early picks. list improvement is not going to magically happen because of a couple of drafts the standard will not go from crap which it is now automatically to great we are not gc or gws.
it will be a gradual raising of the bar it will be done incrementally in many cases it does mean we will have to fill a postion in two or three attempts gradually raising that bar as we go.

and look at gc atm it is not their kids who bearing the brunt it is their mature recruits who carry them and they will trade into many more mature recruits as they go.
bloody hell have a look at most sides who have been reasonably successful for the last 10 yrs or so. 4 or 5 yrs out from finals or top 4 many of them have taken lots of mature players to raise the standard of their list they have done this in conjunction with early picks.

anyway im tired i will get back to these two posts tomorrow. but mate you suffer tunnel vision and have unrealistic expectations of what can be done thru the nd. if we attempt to do it your way we will be looking for the replacements ofor cotchin deledio et al with out having had any success at all.

Regarding the bold,Apart from Ottens and Mooney Geelongs whole list came from the ND. Geelong traded for a AA in Ottens. How many AA should we get??? Unrealistic IMO!

As far as WC are concerned in 1994 ignore as they just entered the comp and had different rules. As far as WC is concerned the base of the team is from drafting and really although well deserved if Geelong had their act together they should have won probably in a weak year.

I am not all over the shop. I am saying we should go heavy the 17 year olds and ND in the next 3 years and then look more at trades or whatever later on as our list is stronger across the board in terms of the development nucleus. Our core list needs a lot more talent before getting specific about positions and pin-point trades. The point is , like with Fyfe, real talented players are not up for grabs in trades even if you are GWS So if you want quality go the ND. That doesn't mean if opportunity from PNG, Ireland or wherever we shouldn't have a crack or a trade for a 20 year old if the value/quality is exceptional.

I agree, we might need more than 4 players a year but that isn't going to happen because we are reaching if people think we are. IMO that is a BS dream expecting us to get 5+ players a year and many supporters wouldn't beieve such rhetoric!!! That is why patience is the key!!!

I wouldn't worry about treading water, apart from Hawthorn, Collingwood and GC everyone else is treading water including Geelong!!!

If you want to fix thinks do not be afraid to go out and grab it!! You never know what you can do until you try!!!

No regrets!!!

All the Richo's in the world want to play in premierships, lets give Cotch and co that chance!!!!:thumbsu:

I think we'll struggle again next year and I'm fully prepared for it.
Hopefully Dimma continues with his 'no short cuts' policy and Hartley, Cameron & Jackson find players capable of executing what he wants.

Some elder spuds aside, I've been impressed with the development of many of our younger players this year.
A result between 10-12 whilst cleaning out more crap and injecting more talent would be a pleasing result.
Anything better than that is a bonus.

One thing I'd add to this discussion: we can't realistically expect consistency. A few posters mentioned they want to see us playing 4Q games each week, and eliminating the big losses... unfortunately it doesn't work that way with a young team. That takes experience.

If we're on track, next year we will win about half our games, but we will be blown away in some of them and have a poor percentage.

  • 2010 avoid spoon
  • 2011 finish outside bottom 4
  • 2012 in the mix for finals 7- 11
  • 2013 finals 5-8

Extend Hardwick's contract for 1 year with the expectation of finals in 2013.

Continued development of the playing list and gameplan towards a serious and sustained tilt at finals action either the end of next year or 2013. Keep clearing out the not quite good enoughs and keep giving young kids a fair crack at claiming a spot in the 22. As long as we finish above our position this year and showed improvement in the above areas I'll be happy.

I will settle with continued improvement. If that improvement happens to take us to the finals, then that's a bonus.

Not expecting finals next year. Solid improvement in executing a game plan and consistent effort on a weekly basis is expected though.

Expecting 9 - 12th with some solid improvers and a healthier list. 2013 should be in the mix.

Have said 4 the last 2 years that 2012 was the year we start 2 rise and 4 all the idiots that keep saying get rid of the coach how about we get rid of the players that just play just 4 the money

We're a good chance to finish 10th this year. We may only need to beat two out of three bottom-8 teams to do it. If we do, I bet a lot of people will suddenly expect finals in 2012.

With such a huge player turnover I expected us to finish in the bottom 4 this year with 6 to 8 wins.

At the end of this year we probably won't turn over as many players as the last 2 years, I'm thinking around 8 this year.

Next year I'm thinking 8 to 12 wins and finishing just outside the 8. Realistically we could have done it this year if we didn't drop games that we should have won.

By the end of next year we will delist another 8 or so, effectively removing the last of the dud players Dimma inherited and some of the players that haven't kicked on from his first draft.

You guys are kidding yourselves about finals. Our list is very young and has poor depth.

Melbourne is ahead of us in development, Freo will make the 8 with a decent injury run. GC may improve, so might Adelaide.

Only teams I would expect to finish above are GWS, Port and maybe Brisbane. Then probably one other team.

All I hope for is a good injury run, show some spirit and eradicate embarrassing losses.

Gee a bit early isn't it?

A gameplan that the players can understand/execute might be a good place to start, and dont re-sign the coach until at least this time next year, make him earn it:thumbsu:

you cant introduce the instability of 'will they/wont they' re-sign him halfway/three-quarters into a season. We all know that is total poison... and will start speculation from the start of the season onwards.

Given the level of progress achieved (and there has definately been that)..and in the context of the wider plan... he's already 'earnt it'.

Extend before round 1 2012; make sure he and the players know that he has at least 2 years in the bank so that he can continue to make the hard decisions and not take short cuts.

Leaving him hanging is just inviting Wallace style behaviour of picking and recruiting players to save your job for 6 months not develop a team with a long term future.

thats a good point. I would give him another 4 to make it 5 more so ensure he looks at long term interests of club regarding premierships and no short cuts.

The last thing we need is a trade for a ready made player(s) before our base playing list is capable to win a premiership from not recruiting enough long term ability before we can think about developing it into a genuine force to be reckoned with in a GF situation!!
