How big a part does this play in getting into the Defence Force?

I have my medical testing and stuff coming up and I wear glasses all the time so my vision isn't very flash. If any one could help me with the standards from past experiences that would be great.

I want to be a Rifleman in the Reserves but I fear that my eyes may let me down...

Do I need good eyesight to be in the Navy, Army and Air Force?

The ADF requires a high level of visual correctness to meet the unique nature of the military environment. There are some instances where visual shortcomings are acceptable providing vision can be corrected by your spectacles or contact lenses. Your vision will be examined to determine your suitability for a particular job and service within the ADF

Good Luck mate. I'm sure you'll do just fine.

you have a eye test of which you have to show you have 6/12 vison without glasses and 6/6 with glasses, most get 6/5 with glasses on

never heard of not wearing glasses for 48 hour before, that might be a new thing, however there are thousands of people in the ADF with glasses so dont stress, you are actually entitled to 2 pairs every 3 years or if you have a change in visual acuity

I dont think you will have any problems joining as a grunt, the defence force is pretty desperate for people due to the mining boom

i would join the Engineers though if I was you,you still get to run around the bush with a gat yelling bang bang(because there is a shortage of rounds atm),but you can also pick up some skills

good luck

Awesome that your giving it a shot. You have an eye test and aren't allowed to wear glasses/contacts for 48 hours beforehand, if you pass that your set. I know this because I have my medical assesment on the 14th October going for Operator Movement in the reserves. Have you had your YOU session yet?
Best of luck, hope you get in.
Thanks so much for the help guys :)

I did a JOES session last year but only did the aptitude test, as I had applied for officer entry but didnt get enough on the aptitude test, so I had qualified for general entry. Ive left it until now, when I realised that I really want to join the Reserves just as a Rifleman.

I have the rest of my assessment day on the 22nd of October so fingers crossed. Isnt that the same day u have interviews with a psych and everything too?

Yer on my assesment day I have a full body medical test, an interview with the defence force recruiter and an interview with a psych. My recruiter said to know the job inside out before the interview, including what types of weapons they use, how long training is for etc.
Ahh yeah thats swell cos Im a bit of a military enthusiast anyway lol.

How did your assessment day go? Did they say anything about what actual scores you have to get on the visual acuity test? Im shitting myself here :o

Got the test this Tuesday, I will fill you in about how it goes.
No worries. I'm sure you will do fine. I have seen the WA Police Psych and they arent very pleasant, the key is just to keep cool because they look at your reaction opposed to pressure, etc. With the medical, I know they look at your BMI, physique and all sorts of things.

All the best. PM me your feedback if thats easier :)

Trying to join the defence force has been a incredily horrible experiance for me. It took them 3 months to realise that they gave me a postal address which had not been in use for 8 months so all my documents got lost and then i sent in the stuff again and they lost 1 piece of paper which meant i have to send that it again.

Hopefully we never get invaded as the defence force would spend months doing nothing while they fill out the paperwork.

Haha yeah ur right. Sad to hear about such a bad experience.

Did u go on to do it anyway, or did u just leave it in disgust?

pretty sure there is a hotline now that is supposed to help with these recruiting problems that have plagued the defence force in the past.

can have a search around on the defence intranet if you like?

keep battling though ,unfortunatly most of recruiting is run by civilain recruiting agencies now who constanty **** things up.once your in however, your in and its a good time to join, salarys are on the rise and promotion is a lot quicker

To be fair, DFR is run by civvies rather than the military.

I wear glasses (contacts), and joined the reserves last May. The eye exam is just given to you by any civilian optometrist (they may refer you to one). My eyesight was pretty borderline, but just snuck in.
Anyhow now I've got one month long course left at RMC before I get my pips - and can't wait. Get stuck in.
