"As just one example of what two team towns are up against, the Stars this year had a current Australian star make a non-binding agreement to come to the club.

But the player was told at the 11th hour by his home state that if he left its BBL team he wouldn’t be able to play Sheffield Shield cricket – and he ultimately reneged.

This is a tactic the Perth Scorchers have used in the past and recently Queenslanders Matt Renshaw, Michael Neser and Usman Khawaja have all returned home to the Brisbane Heat."

didn't realise this was a thing...

Always knew Perth did it, surprised QLD are on board, but wouldn’t be shocked if NSW did it as well.

Should be the Sydney smash on Xmas day, that way no one has to travel

But anyone saying T20 is taking over Tests when 160,000 just went to watch Australia beat up a minnow in a test match is a bit off the mark!
Weren’t you one of the ones bashing Perth’s 60,000 across four days? But Melbourne’s 160,000 (which, given the population discrepancy is about the same per capita), in the middle of school and work holidays, including Boxing Day, is a resounding success?

Pick a lane.

The number of games was put forth by CA. This has been widely and consistently reported as the case (by reporters who've long had access to private BBL-related emails between CA and 7). Look it up.

As for these supposed "many" other changes this season. I don't know what you're talking about. The Marvel roof rule is probably the next biggest change, which is clearly not significant and obviously dictated by CA anyway.
Also consistently reported that the changes were due in 2024-25 but brought forward after 7 was ‘open to it’. They then coincidentally abandoned their legal action against CA.

100,000 more with 3 days played on work days whilst Perth couldn’t even get 10,000 on a Sunday!!!

I'm calling bullshit on that.

If he's a "current Australian star", good luck explaining to CA and to the public why you didn't pick him for Sheffield Shield.

It might be realistic if we're talking about a fringe player who needs the Shield games - Neser and Renshaw are 2 good examples - but "current Australian star" is a pretty limited field.

I also wonder if the Stars are aware of what "non-binding" means.

“The best and fairest way for equalisation is a draft. Clearly. The ACA have been on record as saying that they’re not supportive of that,” Cummins said.

“What we are seeing is an emergence of there being a real competitive advantage of being a one-team program. It’s challenging for NSW and Victoria."

Kind of telling that the best plan to reverse their incompetence Cricket Victoria can come up with is 'we should be able to steal other state's players with the BBL's blessing, rather than developing our own.'

Interesting article.
When the Stars were at their peak they had players such as Kevin Pieterson, David Hussey, Luke Wright, James Faulkner, Marcus Stoinis (when he was still alive), Brad Hodge, Lasith Malinga, and Cameron White.
Pretty formidable.

Now it's Sam Harper, Tom Rogers, Beau Webster, Hilton Cartwright, and a completely disinterested Stoinis. All their imports are Pakistani bowlers.
If they have no money because it's all going to Maxwell - fair enough. He's basically their only player.

As for the Gades, on paper they look better with de Kock and Fraser-McGurk but playing guys like Jonathan Wells and Mackenzie Harvey basically admits they don't have anyone else better.

Not that some of the other teams (Hurricanes, Thunder) are much better but there's an expectation in Melbourne of success which is fair enough.

Gone are the days of AB de Villiers, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, playing in the BBL which is part of the problem.

And all this plays into the Scorchers hands . It will be a major shock if they don't win it again.

Sydney Thunder have made the last four finals series, and Sydney Sixers the last five.

Looks like a purely Victorian problem to me.

Do you need me to post the definition of per capita for you? Melbourne has a population of 5 million to Perth’s 2 million. And work days, lol, the days between Christmas and New Year when swathes of the population are on holiday. Give me a spell.

The crowds were comparable. But you didn’t have the mitigating factors of school, work and 40 degree days. If you’re saying Perth crowds were shit, that’s fine, but Melbourne’s were as poor then.

Yeah, seems like a sook. From what I have seen of it - paying a bit more attention this year (this is kinda from a marketing/branding perspective):

Renegades

Players like Finch and Maddinson being in the team at all. They have maybe four Victorian players in total so why would Victorians really back them? Be the Renegades, play Victorian kids, play moneyball, try to create a brand of the team that does something different. It's already a rubbish team so now is the time to change it.

Stars

The name is rank and turns me off straight away. You are a star because of what you do not because you call yourself stars. Haven't looked at their squad. If you want to call yourself the Stars then get some money and bring in some actual stars.

At the moment they have two mediocre teams that don't mean anything.

Moises preferred a longer BBL and so do I. Ten games per team for an 8 team comp is a farce.

If Moises supports a longer BBL, then we know shortening it was a good idea!

When there are 4 absolutely terrible teams this year, 2 rank average sides and the 2 best teams wouldn’t have made finals in the state comp, you don’t need more games.

The thing is probably 90% of Victorians don’t actually have a team. Everybody in the one-team towns has a team, and even in Sydney there’s at least an implied geographical divide between the Sixers and Thunder. Barely anybody in Melbourne gives two shits whether the Stars or Renegades are good or not and aren’t going to go out of their way to show up to games. Slight exception maybe for MCC members who loosely support the Stars out of convenience.
This. I don't have a team. I support the Bushrangers. Personally couldn't give a #### about Stars or Renegades and especially don't as players don't even necessarily play for their shield state. Absolute nonsense. Make it a state comp again and I might get back into it.

But you won't, though. You'll find some other whiny manchild excuse to rag on it at every opportunity, like the other random internet guys do.

Look, if it offends you that much, you don't have to watch it. There are heaps of other things to do with your time, perhaps you should find something on TV that you don't hate.

But I would though. And this is the first time I've said something against it this summer and will probably be the only time. And I don't watch it.

Other than the Hurricanes the two Melbourne teams are getting the worst crowds when playing at their regular home.

They are also perennial the worse performers.

Drop one of the Melbourne teams, and only play games at the MCG. Save Docklands from having to put in a pitch.

Increase the season from 5 home games to 6 home games so each team plays every other team once at home and once away. This only increases the number of games in the season (excluding finals) from 40 to 42.

Seems like a reasonable balance.

I wonder if would be feasible to add 2 teams from NZ to the comp?

Make it a 10 team league everyone plays each other once then then the finals.

Condense the season into 3-4 weeks in January once the tests have finished and hopefully it’ll encourage high calibre players from the touring teams to sign up for the comp for an extra few weeks in Aus/NZ.
