Anyone else frustrated with how this whole game seems to revolve around being a killer? So much different to previous games.

Just up to the Valentine mission/ level 12, best weapon is around 64 damage (pistol) feel like I might have wasted perks, but starting to put more perks into luck now, want to have more influence on convos, be a tank in combat, and use chems and food regularly for health re-gen

This is my build so far, surely early enough to keep going and not start again? (im sure this isn't exact but the best recollection off the top of my head)

Also i note Manceys sage advice regarding crops, but still got SFA caps. Until I open up more settlements, just keep ploughing along with the story for the moment and leave better weapons and moar caps for later?

I swear he has told me how super mega awesome I am a few times in chat and heaps of notifications where Preston likes actions I've done.
Still can't get the perk though, definitely taking a while.

Yeah same with me for Preston, must have pulled me aside 10 times to tell me how great I am for reviving the Minutemen but still no perk. Maybe you need to bang him lol

With the Freedom trail, you just follow the little red strip on the ground from the start of the trail near Swan's pond. Although I think you can just go straight to the last destination, Old North Church, without looking at all the markers along the way and it still works.

Do you need to have him as a companion and complete some quest for him?

I am in the middle of a quest for Nick (I assume that will unlock his perk).

Shiiiiit son, from my experience i think you've spread your points out over a few too many perks. You start getting super strong with damage etc when loading up specific perk trees to their maximum. Gun nut, idiot savant & lockpicking are must haves, good job. Hacker perk i feel is a bit of a waste as well as mysterious stranger (its cool asfuk tho). Different perks for different play styles, but i feel you may reqret aqua boy, leadbelly & lifegiver. Just my two cents.

Caps will add up eventually even without doing stuff like cropping.

You can go on a scavenging missions, picking up every gun and armour you can (strong is good for these missions, carries heaps), go to a trader and sell it all. Make sure you up your charisma (suits, grape mentats) before selling for better prices.

Even then, most traders only 300 caps or so.

My advice is just keep playing and let it add up. You don't need to buy much anyway, just find stuff

What happens if I laid mines around the settlements? Do they know I did it if it blows them to bits?
