Fantastic Drafting

This draft reminds me of a classic quote that i would like to share with you all.

"It's a deal, it's a steal, it's the Sale of the f***ing Century!"
The past 12 months of gloom and doomed has now disappeared and everything is rosy again. Gee things change quickly. Not that I am complaining as I think the negativity on here was the worst of any board on BF. But just to balance things a bit where's Geoffe Miles?

Do you remember all the posts about trading away our picks for Hill and Sherman... The constant arguments about Worsfold digging us a hole and only thinking about his own job? The draft is king.

I'd really like to know what some of those posters believe. Would they prefer Darling or Hill?

Do all of us want Hansen,Bones & Nicoski gone? Pretty much but this was not the year for that to happen for reasons we all know. Next year! We had some very good rookies who deserved their spot on the list. Strijk was a bloody brilliant find and i'm glad they realized to keep the kid happy he had to be upgraded immediately. Wilson has made the most of his limited chances given and deserved to show us what he can do on a regular basis, same goes for Stevenson. After all we have put three years development into these kids and they are starting to deliver.

Terry Wallace was on SEN Radio last night and he was saying he thought both us and North cleaned up in the draft, however that while we picked up some awesome bargains we didn't fill our needs. Stating only that we needed more good kickers. Wow hard to see how this guy lost his job at Richmond. Firstly we picked up Gaff a brilliant kicker with a handy left foot that can run all day and knows how to find the ball, then we selected Darling, a bustling forward with a bit of mongrel in him then Lycett a 202cm giant with athletic ability who rucks but can also go forward and kick a goal. We also selected Brennan under father and son not sure about that one but time will tell.

Now if he had bothered to look at our list he would see we have only Cox and Naita in the ruck department and Cox aint getting any younger so another ruckman was needed. Check. We lost Mckinley, and Hansen and Lynch will not be at the club after next year so another good stocky forward was needed. Check. And Gaff is a brilliant left foot kick which we selected first up. Honestly Plough you are a idiot.
So is Stibbard claiming in todays paper that we were very conservatitve and that we only selected three players plus Brennan. Lol Wow That makes four you idiot. All in all these guys glance over a spreadsheet when it comes to our list and just talk dribble. Just remember my fellow eagles "Opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one and most are full of sh*t."

sometimes it is nice to have some good things happen. We did very well in the draft and we are happy for it. This draft doesn't change the feelings from the previous few years but changes my feelings on the future. It looks brighter.

I thought you did very well with 3 different types, 1 absolute gun mid that with Shuey will be in the thick of it for years, 1 Forward that might be anything (still not sold) and 1 very good ruck.

But......(spray jacket on) you needed more mids that can kick, and while you did very well with what you got, as far as needs go, you needed fast line breaking mids and really, you got none. So as far as you guys cleaning up.......I'm not sold.

We didn't have enough picks to fill all our needs. A FF has been a long time coming. The failure of Notte, Lynch and Hansen... Wilson will shortly be added to the list.

Sullivan was delisted so the ruckman situation was getting serious.

Gaff was the best available at 4.

Line breaking mid and forward pocket are still players we would like but if we had the perfect team we would be winning premierships. No team has the perfect squad.

This was a very important draft.

I think all Eagles fans would agree that we would have liked to be able to use pick 45 on a mid with quality footskills.

We did well with what we had (well time will tell I suppose), we did poorly to not have the ability to use pick 45. But that was the result of years gone by, not the draft.

I concur, great drafting. I havent seen enough of Gaff mind you but I really hope he can develop quickly. My only concern is that he is unproven against men whereas Polec has been breaking games apart in the SANFL. Hopefully that decision wont burn us.

I know it's a year away but... who are the eligible prospects for next years draft that possess line breaking capabilities coupled with evasiveness and run & carry? I'd like a few names to look out for next season cos it is still a major deficit in our artillery and, imo, an area that severely needs addressing.

I don't necessarily disagree - but if you look at Collingwood - they really only had Thomas as a linebreaker in their midfield. Geelong had Ablett (and perhaps kelly) - Hawks had Rioli (and perhaps the tall bloke who keeps doing his hammy - name escapes me)

I honestly think we already have the linebreaking mid in our midst in Sheppard - and he has quality skills.

So - I'm on a different bandwagon in terms of simply chasing raw pace. I reckon good skills make you look quick.

Yep agreed, do you reckon your management could have delisted a few more to get a few more?
I get the feeling Woosh and co. are super keen to get straight out of the mire (and who can blame them)By keeping on a few mature players. It seems like nowadays it takes a few years down the bottom to get the rebuilding moving properly.
I know I dont support your team and my opinion is easily brushed........BUT, I would have been hoping to get a few more youngns in the squad ahead of keeping some of the dead wood.

Things can change very quickly. Its only a couple of years ago that you guys had a very pedestrian midfield. You managed to get a couple of good outside players and have a good depth of solid midfield players and all of a sudden have gone from shockers to dockers. Add to that the huge improvement in Mundy and things are looking good. Its not beyond the realms of possibility that with a good pre season, players like Masten, Ebert, Shuey, Shepherd, Butler, S Selwood, Swift etc. can overcome last year's dismal backslide on skills and maybe Embley and Jones get some form back and voila...different team. Unless of course we recruit another failed Freo coach to help with our skills.

Tell me, are the recruiters that got the failed freo coach the same that recruited yesterday?
Hope not! I would think that was more of a management decision rather than the crew handing the drafting...while on that tho', how do you think Longmuir will go in the development role here. Do you know if he was well regarded at Freo (I know he was as a player). Looking forward to watching you guys next season. I reckon you filled some weaknesses in KPP depth in this years recruiting.

You mean John Anthony and Faulks, yeah they have definitely filled our KPP stocks, A new forward and a replacement 22 year old for Taz. Plus upgraded Snos, KPP stocks are doin fine.
I look forward to seeing Masten and Ebert and Selwood (what a draft) improving, finally.

We also upgraded Strijk and Stevenson, so with Gaff, I think we addressed the need. You can never have too many fast skilled midfielders, so whether we have enough remains to be seen.

Terry Wallace was on SEN Radio last night and he was saying he thought both us and North cleaned up in the draft,

Not the best judge a draft result is Terry.

Tambling / Franklin and all that;)

Its wrong to say we didn't fill needs with out picks last night. It's just that we have more needs than can be filled by one draft at the moment.

However said we're looking to a big draft in 2012 is spot on in my view. That will be the year we say goodbye to a few champs - Glass, Embley, possibly Kerr - and will be in a position to make calls on the 2007 kids. Clean out, stock up and start the climb back to no. 1 in earnest.

My point exactly Keyser. It's easy to comment on other clubs but it's somewhat hypocritical if you yourself have shown little talent in the matter your commenting on. I'm just getting sick of Plough, Sheehan & co commenting on our club when they clearly know f**k all. We had reasons we couldn't delist as many as we would like and couldn't fill every need we have, so all in all i think we did extremely well in this draft and filled many needs.

Living in Melbourne you'd be surprised how little they comment on us and when they do how baseless, vague & biased their comments are. I think we did well, most of our supporters do and so does the club. As far as i'm
concerned everyone else can kiss my ass!!!! :thumbsu:

I thought you guys did very well. Lycett was a good pickup, Cox is 29 now so this gives him a few years to mature and develop. Most clubs have 4 or so ruckmen on their list and you guys just had 2, I don't call Lynch a ruckman. :p So I thought that was an important need.

There was no crazy voss this year to off-load contracted players to so not sure what the critics believed you were going to do with contracted players. I think too many clubs were worried about GC stealing players that they inadvertently locked up players that with hindsight seems illogical, but am sure at the time their rating of players differs to now.

I don't think the foot skills are as bad as people make them out to be, you just have a lot of young kids who need game time and development.
