If we win against Carlton & Essendon then we need to win 2 from Geelong , Sydney, Richmond obviously some other results need to go away and we must beat Geelong but we are still a chance and while there is life i will still believe :)

I'm sure GWS will be thrilled with the top 10 pick we're earning them o_O
So they ****en should be, and when they try bitching for more or swapping later rounds we'll remind them how good it is

Yep ,another big fail 4 years straight

So...let us be clear...fail=non-premiership year, pass=premiership? On your criteria Malthouse failed 11 out of 12 seasons. Perhaps you should give Buckley the same opportunity?

I didn't say only a premiership is a win ..
Going from top 2 down every year to bottom 8 and sliding is a fail in my books..
4 years 4 million and you want to give him a go .. That's not good enough

Need to win the next 2 to give us a faint whiff of hope.

Would take a miraculous turnaround in form from here though.

I wouldn't say it's a failure of a year to be honest.
Prior to the season starting we all assumed (majority) that we would finish from 7th to 12th with making finals a bonus.

Yes it is disappointing to be sitting on 8-3 and drop the last 6 to basically fall out of finals contention but that happens with young sides.

Greenwood missed majority of the season.
Sidebottom missed about 8 weeks.
Cloke will have missed 4.
Reid hasn't played at all.
2 blokes suspended for the whole season due to ASADA.
Among other things...

On an exciting note - We have debuted Moore, Maynard, DeGoey, Scharenberg who all look like they will have good futures.

Our other recruits Varcoe and Crisp have slotted in nicely and will finish likely top 5 in the Copeland.

If we can manage to snare a player such as Treloar in the off season that would be huge for the side and fits our age brackets nicely.

Finals next year is a must, this year was always going to be a development year.

Those who think missing finals is ok have had their expectations lowered by media and pert and buck's clever media work. I am sure inside the club there will be a perception if a failed year.
Not many clubs are satisfied when the team has gone backward for 5 consecutive seasons.
That's not to say there haven't been some positives( unveiling DeGoey and others) and some bad luck ( injuries suspensions etc), but the fact will remain that we had a better run with injuries, an easy draw yet we still (maybe) finish 12, with teams with younger lists in WB and GWS finishing above us.
Throw in Swanny and Pendles will probably go 1 and 2 in the Copland again I think we do have reasons to view the year as a poor one.
We shouldn't wallow in this but hopefully the club will be aggressive in off season recruiting to make the appropriate changes to the squad to improve our future chances going forward, and not settling on status quo believing the list is good enough.

Mathematically we can make finals, but it means basically winning at LEAST 4 of the last 5, which is doable in the form we were pre-Port Adelaide. But we're clearly not in that form.

But, today we find out whether COLLINGWOOD believes it can make finals, because the AFL clearly doesn't.

When did he say not winning a flag was a fail?

Not making finals definitely is though.

If we hit form, which is a big if because I don't see where it will come from, we are perfectly capable of winning 4/5.

We could catch the Tigers on a bad day too.

If we can smack Carlton it could get the confidence back up.

I still have us only beating Carlton and Essendon and maybe Geelong though.

Is making a preliminary final in 2012 a "big fail?"

I agree that the media have been very kind to Bucks and Collingwood this year. They overrated our performances in the first half of the year and have had little to say about our losing streak. Expect that to change significantly if we lose to Carlton. With Cloke getting close to a return and Reid ready for AFL we should be able to finish the year off strongly. Anything less and it is a wasted year.

Is making a preliminary final in 2012 a "big fail?"

Not to me personally, but I could see how someone a little more emotional than others could see how it is.

Bucks took over a Premiership list off the back of 2 Grand Finals appearances. Scott took over Geelong off a Prelim loss and they won a flag in the first year. I'm aware it's not that black and white, but I could see how someone could see 2012 as a failed year.

I hope you don't get a ban for talking the truth and facts ..

So we have gone from beating top 4 sides to being happy to beating bottom 6 sides now .. All in the space of 4 years .
It's not good enough for us members ..

The boys need some confidence and belief, that motivation needs to be injected by the coaching staff and senior players. They need to pump the team up and show the youngsters the way. If only tommy hafey was around for a rile up

Well its simple really...our list is not a top 6 list.
It was pretty clearly going into this season that we would probably be in with the mass of teams outside the top 4-6 but still somewhere in the hunt for finals. Of those teams- WCE, WB and Richmond have all suprised, while geelong, north, GC, Ess and Port (who shouldve been top 4) have all done worse than expected. We are probably in the middle of those 2 groups and par for the course for 2015... And have done so while blooding lots of youngsters and not topping up with veterans (like north & ess).

Thats the short term view on this season.
---

As for the long term view of the last few years... Well thats been discussed ad nauseum. My strong belief is that if those hard decisions werent made at the time, our fall from grace wouldve been much steeper and we wouldve had to rebuild almost from scratch after a St Kilda-esque drop.

Welcome to taking a team over at it's zenith and having to clean out a 'volcanic' (to use Pert's words) drug culture and then rebuild from scratch with 1st round draft picks

If you don't have the stomach for it Carlton are always trying to buy a quick fix flag and they really need the membership :thumbsu:

Why are the 2 considered mutually exclusive? Where is the "all of the above" option?

When we were 8-3 the situation was pretty much as it is now with 10+ <50 gamers in the team. How can that not be considered development? Were people dismissing our chances of playing finals then?

While it's still mathematically possible, finals are still a possibility.

What Results would have to go our Way?

Plus IF we flucked it and made the Finals. We would get Smashed in the EF

It's a long time since I've done any high-school probability but by my reckoning there are 45 games left in the home and away which would throw up a shoit load of potential outcomes. People doing these ladder predictors are guessing the outcome of every one of those 45 games and as Richmond beating Hawthorn and the WCE-GCS draw showed, there are no certainties.

Who knows, footy is a strange game.

Not playing finals this year though.
Not good enough.

How so?

I mean I'm very optimistic about the team and preseason predicted 5-12 although admitting 7-12 was the more realistic range. Many posters had us un a similar range. So if there is that acknowledgement preseason that 9-12 is a very realistic prediction then how can finishing there not be good enough?
