Wouldn't every lesson Cam learns in the back 50 translate into increased defensive awareness in the forward 50?

Of course for a real lesson he should play in the back line for the probables so he gets lots of practice ;) <-- typed before reading about the match thread :)

Rayner is not playing as a running defender, chasing an opposition small all over the back half of the ground or up the field. He's playing as a defacto third tall, marking his man, playing within the structure of the zone defense. Sometimes he was the last man in defence, reading the play and calling out instructions. He rotated in this role with Andrews and Starcevich.

I was at the intraclub tonight.
I have to say Rayner looked impressive in defence. Reminded me a bit of Starc, strong and classy. You feel confident he’ll win most contests and looked composed with ball in hand. I’m not against it if it happens in the proper season.

Nah, he’s an idiot. Gets fed his news by club sources, which is fine. Many journos run the same game. So I never discount his “scoops”, especially with the off-field stuff. (although most of his sources are in Victoria). But anyone looking to him for genuine footy analysis are barking up the wrong tree, particularly when it comes to footy in Qld & NSW.
I see him as simply a reporter and not an analyst. Does that make him an idiot?

I agree. It seems Rayner will never be mobile enough or have a big enough tank to be a genuine midfielder and will only be a fairly average medium forward. I think he is more of a straight line footballer and half back is where he can use his speed and strength to more effect. He could also develop into a good intercept marker off half back,a bit like Tom Stewart at Geelong. I really hope this move becomes a success for both Cam and the team. He has a massive amount of talent but just needs the right position to show it.

Rayner to be our new Chris Johnson down back?
Provides that bit of physicallity and athleticism combined with creative and skillful disposal.

He doesn't have the talent or speed of Johnson imo but he's physically more imposing and just as hard at it when he's able to get near the ball.

There's been a lot of debate about Cam in the backline and I wouldn't be against trying it out if it doesn't detract from other positions on the ground.

I'd say he has just as much talent as Johnson, he just hasn't harnessed it yet. Rayner has a good burst or speed but you're right, he can't sprint down the entire wing like Johnson could.

I remember when Johnno started at Fitzroy and he was just an elite talent but didn't have the physicality or anyone looking after him there and that didn't come till he got to Brisbane. Cam on the other hand has the physicality and attack on the ball but imo is sometimes sloppy in how he goes about it and until some occasions last year far too rushed in his disposal. Just an interesting sidenote when Johnno went for a speccy he often nailed it whereas Cam gets up there but usually spills it.

Fair point. An overly harsh description on my part. Partially a reaction to the smugness he radiates.

And Johnno also played as a forward at Fitzroy, but was way better when played in defence. He was a straight line player similar to cam imo.

A possible side for round 1 taking into account the pre season scuttlebutt and some media talk ie Roar Deal.

Brandon Starcevich, Jack Payne, Connor McKenna.
Daniel Rich, Harris Andrews, Cam Rayner.

Oscar McInerney, Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley.
Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry(W), Darcy Wilmot(W).

Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Lincoln McCarthy.
Jack Gunston, Joe Daniher, Zac Bailey.

Dev Robertson, Will Ashcroft, Keidean Coleman, Dayne Zorko.

TS- Fort/Tunstill/Lohmann/Prior/Answerth.

I still think we go 3 talls in defence with Rayner going back to his usual fwd/mid position. Unfortunately Dev out and either Gardiner (if available) or Fullarton in.
I really like the idea of Tunstill on the wing but Mike Whiting had good things to say about Wilmot in that position so without seeing it myself I’ll take his word for it.

If only we could get our back 6/7 more settled.
Over the past few years this has not been the case.
Going into round one we could once again have an unsettled backline.
Let's assume Rayner is playing 3rd tall as precaution for Gardiner possibly not available for the first few rounds.

Most likely it will be Starcevich, Rich, Andrews who have played together for a while.
Coleman joined that group about round 6 last year so played 18 games last year and about 6 the previous year with the above 3 players.
Rayner knows all the above players but has not played an AFL game in defense yet.
Looks like McKenna may get that HB spot as Wilmot playing wing and Answerth has yet to play a sim.
McKenna has not played AFL for a few years and yet to play an AFL game with any of our back 6/7.
Payne has been in and out of the team but strung together 12 games last year due to injuries.

Individually all the named players can play good footy, but can they gel together in defense. Let's hope so.
When Gardiner comes back in the dynamics change considerably but our defense group will still be a little inexperienced.

Hopefully the continuity will build throughout the year and settled come Finals.

One last crack before the next two weeks change my mind, particularly in regards to the wings.

B. Gardiner. Andrews. Starcevich
HB. Coleman. Payne. Rich
C. Berry. McCluggage. Wilmot
R. McInerney. Neale. Dunkley
HF. Gunston. Hipwood. Bailey
F. Cameron. Daniher. McCarthy
IC. Rayner. Zorko. McKenna. Robertson
S. Tunstill

Kai Lohmann is an exciting young player...should be match fit to play against Geelong early next month and will be fascinating how he performs and how they could fit him into the first 22.
I don't disagree with you, in fact more likely agree, but is that just your opinion or is it coming from inside the club or from mail you are getting from someone inside the club?
