I'm doing this thread for Magic Johnson, who had a bit of a bitch and moan about how he's yellow carded and cant create a new thread! :p

So anyway, what was everyone's FIRST live game of AFL (or VFL for those called Recat :p) football? Or were you brainwashed as a kid and cant actually remember the game cause you were too young? What special things can you remember about the game, did we win, lose? And why did you keep on going back?

I've said this before, but yeah my first game was the game. Geelong v Essendon, 1993, MCG. Went with my parents, was my first time to the G too and saw two full forwards completely dominate the game. (Which is very rare to see these days) Even tho Gaz kicked 14 in a losing side, I was sold! Have kept going ever since. :thumbsu:

Can't remember my 1st Geelong match.
I was brainwashed as a kid, so I naturally followed the cats.
My first memory of A game though, was sitting on the boundary near the goals & Ablett marking the ball right in front of me.
It was such a frill seeing the great man live in person. :thumbsu:

Not my 1st game...... but the 1st game i took my missus to was Vs Richmond in 2007....... we had such a great time...and shes been hooked ever since....must say shes had a better run then me..... i think we have only lost about 5 games since shes been going to the games with me......

and i cant remember my 1st game......

my grandpa used to take me when i was a kid....... he died about 4 years ago..... so i cant ask him........

Lol.

But thats very sweet- that he took you to games.

As for Miranda... nice run indeed!!!! The first year I followed footy, Geelong had a major mid season slump, decided "Oh we are a good team after all", and proceeded to beat most teams in the top 6, then miss out on the finals by dam percertage and cause Collingwood couldnt do us a favour.

Yeah im still bitter. :D

Geelong vs Essendon 1989 preliminary Final. Cats ended up thrashing the pants off the bombers. Dad being an essendon supporter, wanted to leave at 3 qtr time.

I don't remember my first game, would have only been a final quarter at Kardinia Park in 1991 or 1992 most likely. Think I went to my first full game in 1993 or so - I could check if I was at home, I have a footy record from every match I've ever been to (bar those first few last quarters).

Mine was a Wednesday night at Waverley Park for the 1992 Fosters Cup round 1 match between StKilda and Geelong. The family friends were all Saints fans and i was the lucky 11 year old Cats fan who saw us get up by 3 points.
the score was something like 9.24 to 9.21 or something like that. I remember turning my head to just miss Gary Ablett take a hanger on Danny Frawley's shoulders. *spewing* Saw it on the replay, it was a pearla!!
I was a small fan back then. I remember seeing myself on the scoreboard waving to the camera with a cast on my left arm. Looked like the biggest unco...lol
Awesome night.

Better game to talk about than the last game i went to

When I was a little one the old man used to bring me in at Half time. Can't really remember my first, although I have memories of playing the hawks back at skilled. Would have been early 90's.

My first was Gary Snr's 200th vs Carlton at Waverly in 1994

Almost marked his first goal of the day too...until Dad decided to take a hanger on my 9 year old shoulders :(

We won by 5 goals :thumbsu:

Oh dear. 1969 Round 19 Victoria Park Collingwood v South Melbourne. Peter McKenna kicked sixteen out of the Woods' nineteen. I was ten and on an end of season footy trip.

Can't remember my first Cats game.

Mine was in 1991 at Arctic Park against the Weagles, where such great names like Austin McCrabb, Dwayne Russell, Jamie Lamb and Ray Sterrett donned the blue and white hoops. We went down by 7 goals for the record.

shell, i did not have a bitch and a moan!

back to the point, this probably isnt my first game but this is the first one i remember. Probably showing my age here (or lack there of) but the first game i remember going to was in 2002: geelong versus carlton. geelong up all day, going into the last 30-40 up. carlton gradually keep coming back untill with 30 seconds to go they found themselves on top. quickly, we rushed it forward and peter riccardi took a great sliding mark 50 out. siren sounds. ricco kicks it. :D

EDIT: ok, ive been thinking about it, and i remember going to the dome in its first year (2000) to see the cats play the bulldogs.

Sh1t, you guys are making me feel old.

I've got no idea what the first game I saw was, but my Dad started taking me to the outer in the late 1970s (and yes, I can even remember Sam Newman as the old man of the team - playing mostly CHB in those days if I recall correctly). I was probably only about 7 or 8 and the entire half of the ground from the old Hickey stand (now known as Doug Wade I think - don't get to too many home games these days living in Sydney) around to where the Ford Stand (?) is now was standing room.

The outer was just a mud hill with terraces in those days, and they used to pack them in like sardines. I remember crowds in the 80s of upwards of 35 000 with everyone packed in and screaming abuse. I think the Hells Angels used to set up a keg in the pockett at the city end under the scoreboard - a far cry from the samitised conditions of today.

Because I was way too small to see my Dad used to put me on his shoulders and stand on empty beers cans for a bit of extra height. Of course, that couldn't go on forever and pretty soon I found that you could climb the scrappy trees behind the hill, behind the goals at the city end and get a wicked view down the ground. There were about 2 or 3 of these and scrappy trees and every conceivable vantage point in them was crowded with kids in Geelong jumpers. When you went to climb them the kids in there would quiz you to make sure you were a cats supporter - no outsiders allowed!

Anyway, there's my little trip down memory lane. For those of you who only remember the AFL days footy was pretty cool back in the VFL day. In fact, you young 'uns could learn a thing or two from us older, wiser heads!;)

Round 1, 1984 vs Fitzroy. Was only 7 years old then, and stood in the outer where the Ford Stand is now. Was Gaz senior's first game for Geelong, and Jacko and Greg Williams were playing their first game for Geelong as well. Had a pretty handy centre line that day...Ablett on one wing, Diesel in the centre, and Mick Turner on the other wing. Jacko ended up kicking 8 or 9 goals and we won quite easily.

My first game watching the cats live was South Melbourne V Geelong at the Lakeside Oval 17th of August 1974. The Cats won by 1 point and as the only Geelong Supporter in a family of Swans. I had the best drive home I have ever had stirring the shit out of my older brothers who couldn't touch me because our parents were right there. Happy memories!

Hahaha, was just a tounge in cheek comment.

Yeah that game was awesome. Nothing beats an after the siren win and Geelong has sure had a few of em. :thumbsu:

PS. Didnt Carlton get a bullshit 50M penalty right at the end to put them in front?

My first was a Bulldogs game against maybe the Saints sometime in the early 90's.. they used to come to our school now and then and give out free tickets...

But then we moved up to Qld and i only managed to see my first live Cats game in 2007!

Although we did get them up here for a few pre-season matches a few years ago which was pretty cool.

Yep, bullshit is the operative word when Matthew "Skinny" Lappin took the mother of all dives

Yeah thats it! And he or someone else kicked a beauty like 50M out on the boundary line or close to it.

I really thought we had blown that game, but David Clarke (lol) and Riccardi to the rescue! The commentary by Rexy Hunt was awesome during the last 30 seconds of that match too. :thumbsu:

Hmm my first game, it was v Essendon and there were no seats in GA, my old man tried to bribe a bloke at the gate to let us into the AFL members area (which was half empty of course) but the tool said no. Ended up sitting in the aisle, we lost. Shit experience it was.

So what was your first game then?

I know my mum (who lived in Kennet River at the time) would go to KP and watch the thirds, the seconds AND the firsts. Probably back in the 60s. Talk about getting value for money... three games of footy in a day!
