Opinion First Captain under Walsh?

No doubt he thought he was helping the team by putting his hand up every week. That's a ridiculous criticism and it's on Sando for playing him if he was too injured.

He is responsible for sticking his hand up despite the injury. He's too selfish to be a captain and I stand by that. Much rather a team oriented player like Sloane if VB is out.

No, because he kept sticking his hand up every week despite those injuries limiting him badly. Sanderson takes the blame for selecting him, but Dangerfield bears some responsibility for his selfishness. I also don't recall him doing nearly as much of the get around stuff as Sloane did on the ground.

Dangerfield is a selfish player by nature; it's not necessarily a bad thing, especially not in star players, but it's not a trait for a captain.
Oh cmon he's selfish because he played through injury and fronted up each week. What crap.

Seriously VB's onield output isn't even close to being worthy of the captaincy. Personally I hope he makes way for one of the youngsters. I couldn't care less how much he impresses the sponsors.

Please he put his hand up because he IS a team player and he knew his mates needed him. He didn't sit on selection. You obviously didn't play team sports.

You can stand by it all you like but you're wrong.

No, it's also on Sando for not having the sack to tell injured players like Danger and Thommo that they're sitting and then offering weak excuses like "Oh, you try tell Danger he's not playing". You're the mfing coach, that's your job.

You may have noticed, had you read rather than reacted, that in an earlier post I said it was mostly Sanderson's fault. Doesn't stop Dangerfield from sharing some of the blame.

It's not the only selfish thing he does. He never tracks back, doesn't tackle, doesn't block, doesn't chop out. He doesn't do the team things like other players do. Any impartial observer will tell you the same thing.

Basically, if you want Dangerfield captain you are subscribing to the Grant Thomas view of captaincy - you don't give it to your best leader, you give it to a bad leader you think has potential and try and turn him into one. He tried explaining that to an incredulous Garry Lyon on Footy Classified a few years ago.

Danger is just so selfish, after being smashed for the 10th in the game he puts his body on the line again. What a selfish tosser.

agree

i don't scribe to the selfish player view

Hodge or Selwood play through injury and their courageous, Danger does and he is selfish.....

Difference is Hodge and Selwood receive protection from team mates, Danger doesn't

Exactly, I'm staggered that anyone can criticise him for fighting through the injuries and continuing to put his body on the line.

Perhaps he doesn't run as hard as some other mids because he physically can't.

If he does leave we will be one sorry team. He stays and becomes our Captain we should be bloody dancing in the streets.

I think thommo was selfish because he couldn't run out games. Dangers a different case, as said before he gets no protection.
The annoying thing was it happened in the very first game for the year against Geelong and Sando just gave a "Danger will need to learn to deal with it" response. Protection was probably one of the bigger things we missed from Bernie Vince this year.

We would be a hell of alot closer to a premiership with Dangerfield than without him. He is a once in a decade midfielder. If we lose him we can forget about any premierships in the next 5 years.

Must be the next captain of the AFC. He is the sort of player who can single handly carry a team to a win, much like Tex.

The problem with this statement is that firstly he's not a once in a decade midfielder, but he is very good. But more importantly you've ignored the contract

He has to sign for a contract we can live with, otherwise we are better off without him.

what odds for Tex getting the gig?
I recall Kane Cornes on radio saying Walsh was a big admirer of Tex's on field leadership and tipped him to get the gig.

Whether that's fact or just making mischief who knows. My feeling listening was he seemed pretty genuine and I'm not sure he would pass on a completely false representation of Walsh's thoughts.

I'm hopeful for Tex. From the outside he appears a stand out candidate IMO

Whatever we decide, I hope we have ONE captain rather than some sort of shared arrangement where no one has ultimate responsibility

We really didn't give either bloke a full endorsement to grab the role by the balls and put their mark on it. Not only were they sharing the responsibility, they were only entrusted to keep it warm for a year.

We would probably be a better team if someone could coach Dangerfield out of 'getting smashed' continuously though. It's not always to our, or his, benefit to run into contested situations without a plan of what to do with the ball.

Biggest concern with him last year was the loss of pace. Hopefully that was injury specific. If the beating that he takes causes him to lose that break away speed his effectiveness as a player is drastically reduced.

16th in the B&F. We went to extreme's to prove the point that your captain doesn't have to be your best player, in fact, nowhere near it. Richie V would be proud.

You don't actually want to use best and fairest rankings as the standard though- vB's career high is the same as Dangerfields (who has despite rumours to the contrary actually not won one). 16th is an outlier.

If we're basing it on best and fairests why does Douglas not get any support on these boards?

Stop jumping up to handball!
