First person on Mars or the Moon?

So which would you rather be?

First person on the moon has an entire world admiring them for an achievement thought to be impossible just a decade earlier. The first person on Mars has clearly achieved a much harder feat but has the admiration of a world who assumes it was going to happen eventually and that you were simply the lucky person.

For me I would prefer to be the pioneer, the idea of landing on the moon and being able to look up at it at night after you had arrived back on earth would be too much to pass up.

The idea of looking back on Earth is pretty tempting though. I think I'd have the moon as much as I want to see us go to Mars in my lifetime

Moon is more impressive. I can look up at night and see the moon. It's tangible enough for people to have a proper appreciation of how freaking awesome it is to actually be there.

It also leaves you with the dream of achieving more. Being the first person on mars you would know mankind won't reach beyond it in your life time (except of course in the actual colonisation of the planet)

Just by googling seems like 2030's is the general target.

My guess would be more like in 40+ years for someone to actually walk on the surface. I guess it all would come down to cost v benefit, no doubt they could do it a lot earlier but it would be obscenely expensive not to mention the huge risk of it failing and losing all the astronauts.
