Fisher undergoes LARS surgery.

Just saw the Facebook update. This is excellent news for Fish. Good luck to him, I really hope he gets the ton up and achieves a small slice of immortality at the club.

Just heard Sandy Roberts mention it on Channel 7 news.

I wish Fish all the best and hopefully he returns in good shape and the knee holds up well. 12 weeks gives a Round 10 return or there abouts. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Brad Fisher is expected to return to football in 12 weeks following surgery this afternoon.

Brad Fisher suffered a partial tear of his right ACL in Saturday night’s NAB Cup match against Sydney and he underwent the revolutionary LARS surgery today. The ligament augmentation and reconstruction system (LARS) involves using a ligament made of industrial strength polyester fibres to augment the torn natural ligament.

Good luck to him...

I am realistically expecting to see him back around round 12... would give that couple of extra weeks with the ants to get settled and back into the groove.

Hopefully he will be able to push his way back into the team then.

Is it an all or nothing approach when they opt for the Lars procedure?

I think Malceski went for the LARS because he'd ruptured his ACL previously.

Or is it due to it being a partial tear?

We didn't use the LARS procedure with Waite.

Is BlueBear around?

I think they might come back faster because they don't use a piece of your hamstring or patella tendon in the knee graft.

That also weakens your hamstring or patella tendon.

A mate said this after he had a knee reconstruction.

When they pulled a six inch needle out of his knee, he said he nearly punched a hole through the wall and woke up the whole hospital.

Some people have a low pain threshold and feel ill if they see blood. ;) :D

Good luck Fish.

just found this on Sportal.com.au

Fisher in a hurry

But the club is hopeful of having him back on board by Round 12 following Wednesday's operation, where industrial strength polyester fibres are used to augment the torn natural ligament.

"We underwent a thorough investigation as to the best treatment for this injury, understanding that the LARS surgery is not always the most appropriate and are pleased that it was for Brad's injury."

Fisher in a hurry

Fantastic news. Makes perfect sense for him to undergo this sort of surgery. How awesome would it be if he could make an impact this year as a 3rd tall. There's definitely a role for him if he can get on the park and play some good footy.

That also weakens your hamstring or patella tendon.

I had a hamstring graft ACL reconstruction a few months ago, and in spite of taking a fair chunk of hamstring for the graft it actually recovered relatively quickly.

I think that the recovery is faster with LARS because they augment the damaged ligament as opposed to cleaning it all out, drilling through both bones and threading and screwing the graft in. As I understand it, the bone re-growing and the screws setting is what takes so long to recover from.

It will be interesting to monitor his progress over time.

Fisher strikes me as being a hard worker who strives to get the best out of his body and seems to have a high pain threshold - playing with dodgy thumbs is testament to that.

Clearly not an elite player, but nonetheless, an important cog in tying up a tallish defender with his marking and timing. Having him available in the second half of the season will help with our goal of being an unpredictable forward line.

Good luck, Fish

When does Fisher's contract run out? Am I the only one who sees this perhaps as a last go for Fisher to make it? If he went for the conventional surgery and this is his last year contracted (i have a feeling i read this somewhere, correct me if i'm wrong), his career would be as good as over. This might be his only chance of getting out there in time to prove himself?

Back on board by Round 12 in the VFL or AFL? I certainly don't have him in our best 22...

Um, exactly? Is there some sort of mass amnesia going on in here lately? The bloke was struggling in the Ants last season, he has a reasonable (read normal) pre-season and now it's hip-hip-hooray, a wobbly double knee op fringe forward with tank, kicking and presentability issues will be back to shore up our flimsy attack? Back where? If he slots straight into our team in Rounds 12 - 15 we will certainly be in the cellar.
