Anyone read this in the Herald Sun today. He did a pre-season at the Dees. Apparently the recruiting staff wanted to pick Davey in the Pre-Season draft and Foley with pick 3 in the rookie draft. Instead the coaching staff over-ruled them and Phil Read was picked in the pre-season draft with Davey at pick 3 in the rookie draft. It was hoped Foley would slip through to number 19 but the Tigers got him with pick 4.

He would be handy in our midfield right now. I hate you Phil Read!

Ohhh booohoo!

We can always talk about highnsight and it wont get you anywhere!

Is this where people insert hysterical laughter?

No, it's the point where people who have never read this board before come in and make arses of themselves.

We would have stuffed up his development anyhow.

We had plenty of fun with Philthy.
Exactly, and Foley wasn't that great in his first year at the tigers, he really took a while to get to the player he is now, and back then we needed mature bodies. Foley wouldn't have got us any closer to a flag in our finals years of 04, 05 and 06 but he would be very handy now.

Not as bad as the whole Sewell disaster, theres a player we really should have got, damn you Ferg.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I loved Filthy Phil, i remember him kicking a goal against the saints in 05. He burst out of the centre sqaure and was about 65 metres out and instead of passing the ball lace out to a forward (and there was plenty of options). He put his head down and kicked an almighty drop punt that landed in the goal square and bounced through.

It is about time richmond had some "luck" in the draft after all they did pass on Pavlich for fiora and tambling for Franklin

Quite clearly Phil Read wasnt the best choice we could've made, but it was a joy to have philthy in our team for a few years.

As previously said above, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you can't dwell on it.

Foley didnt play a game until 2005 and only played 6 games that year. Davey played 19 games in 2004, so was the better choice at the time.

If you want to dwell, that was 2003 draft, here's a few more we've missed since:

2003: PSD, we took Phil read, selected after him were Michael Johnson, Jacob Surjan and Josh Mahoney, all still playing. We passed with pick 52, pick 55 saints get Sam fisher, pick 76 tigers get raines.

2004: We take Newton at pick 43, after picking Dunn & Bate, 3 running/forward players of almost identical heights and weights. Could've got mitch morton, justin sherman who went just after. Cats get Matt Egan at pick 62.

2005: We take Buckley at 53, Joel Patful and Matthew Stokes both taken after. Rookie draft: we take Bode, Daniel Hughes & Shane Neaves. Taken after Bode & Hughes were, Priddis, shannon cox & gilham. taken after Neaves were Stiller, mcglynn, keiran jack & ed barlow.

2006: We took chip at pick 12, pick 13 jack riewoldt. Petterd pick 30, Kurt Tippett pick 32.
Rookies: pick 12 we take Daniel Hayes. Taken afterward were Jake king, matt campbell, marty clarke.

In a perfect world imagine having Foley, Sam fisher, Egan instead of Newton, stokes for buckley, Priddis for bode, Gilham, keiran jack, tippett for petterd, jake king, imagine our side.

B: King, Gilham, Rivers
HB: Whelan, Egan, Fisher
C: Priddis, McLean, Bruce

HF: Davey, Miller, Stokes
F: Green, Tippett, Robbo
Foll: White, Foley, Jones
Int: Wonaeamirri, Bate, McDonald, Jack

Look at that team, its pretty F*cking impressive.

That’s what makes this article total BS, you just can't tell with drafts and i'm sure every team has dozens of stories about players they were interested in but didnt pick up. Richmond have plenty themselves, so good luck to them for getting one right. Its not rookie draft errors we need to worry about, its the upcoming national draft which is important, rookies are rookies for a reason.

But thinking about mistakes is just depressing. You don’t want to be the guy who dwells on it and says all the time “Hey remember when I almost ro0ted that really hot chick?” but doesn’t get any action, you want to be the guy out there banging as many possible until one day you get enough experience to settle down with the ultimate one (premiership).

Priddis and Stokes Grrrr!

Newton is going to be good value though, He'll defiantly be a strong forward for us.

Has retired and ironically is part of our coaching staff.

I'm not too sure about that.

I'm not that sure either. And the 3 i named after him, morton's well established, sherman is one of the better running half backs in the league and Egan is an all australian CHB. I'd take all of them over Newton's potential

Egan we could have never got because he was a Geelong special that the pretty much taught how to play football, every club has one of those stories, hopefully Stef Martin is out man.

Morton is nothing special and would struggle for a game with us, where as Newton has potential in a much more important position

Sherman is a good player, but once again we need tall forwards right now even if they are struggling at the moment.

Morton is a better player then Newton right now, but I agree Newton has greater potential and plays a more important position. And someone has suggested that we might chase Sherman at season's end in another thread, so would've been handy to already have him.

All of that is beside the point anyway. My post was to point out the absurdity of spending any time rueing players that we didn't get in the draft, as the OP was doing and i went to great length doing to provide that there are bigger regrets then foley.

The main thing was that the article was bullsh!t, you just have to draft as best as you can and then work with what you have got. Must have been a slow news day

I think Hawthorn has one of them in Boyle, maybe our lot and urs can do a trade for one of your priority picks :thumbsu:
