Do footy fans not like the AFLPA? First I've heard of it. I don't share that view personally.

Even if Dangerfield resigns from good position as head of the AFLPA though, does anyone else think that there's still a perceived conflict of interest created? I wonder if we might create a situation where an umpire might think twice about paying a free kick against or reporting an AFL commissioner.
Most people I know are pretty neutral on them. They see the need for them to represent the players views, but also know those views wont often align with what's "best" for the fans or the sport as a whole

i think grundy has always been fairly overrated and was bog ordinary when required to be the first ruck this year for melbourne. would not consider him superior to mcinerney anymore

briggs is going to be an absolute jet when he gets another preseason or two under his belt

What do you think Oscar does better than Grundy?

Just curious exactly on what basis people believe Oscar is better than any other teams preferred ruck

He does follow up well with tackling at ground level

Plays at about or just above league average for far less money.

Grundy's strengths were being a 'big midfielder' and racking up touches but he doesn't take contested marks or really damage on the spread, so I don't think it has that much value anymore. The downgrade for Melbourne between him and Jackson is massive given how dynamic jackson is, and he can't drop back to CHB and take intercept marks like Gawn or other less talented ruckman do.

Basing that view on how much people seem to hate players having any personal control over their careers through trades/contract process, which is something the AFLPA advocates for. But possible people dislike those things without joining the dots to the PA.

Oscar competes very well against most rucks and breaks even in contests, he runs himself to a standstill and is a handy mark around the ground.

He only gets shown up badly when up against the elite rucks IMO eg. Max Gawn.

Very thrifty of you

Certainly don't mind value for money

grundy's tap work was never his strength but this year he just aimlessly taps the ball to no mans land near his feet

this might have worked in the past where he had a bit more athleticism to follow up and play as a sort of 4th midfielder but his ability to do so is basically nonexistent these days. he is still better than oscar when the ball hits the ground, but this has gone from a major strength of his to something he is probably only average in. briggs from gws and english are far, far better in this regard for comparisons

he looks like a headless chook away from stoppages and lacks aerial presence around the ground

oscar's tap work is better than grundy this year, and although not a major strength of his he is far more of a presence around the ground than grundy is

My philsophy with rucks are that if they aren't genuine difference makers, I'm not interested. I'd put Gawn, English, Jackson, Darcy in my list of rucks worth paying top level money for with Briggs and Draper as players who can move into that bracket.

I'd like Oscar to be more competitive against the best rucks though - he was good against freo at the Gabba this year but obviously failed badly against Gawn at the MCG.

I see things differently with his around the ground work. He virtually gets no uncontested possessions and doesn't take many contested marks or get to many contests when he's rucking the whole game.

The other thing I rate about Oscar as think he is actually a decent key forward (not that we play him much there anymore). He is a serious marking threat and a decent set shot. Teams do have to take him seriously when he pushes forward

The goal of the year selections seem to produce such odd choices. Powell Peppers this week was very good. Will Day’s goal though was really a pretty average looking goal at a non-critical moment in the game.

Strange that it was considered ahead of Wilmot’s which was a running goal with a bit of the spectacular about it. The first goal nominated was also reasonably generic by Broad. A nice enough finish but the bar is set low these days.

How Day’s goal was considered better than about ten others is bizarre.

yep and to think he was not even in GWS plans moving forward.

Not sure that's entirely true, he was their only ruck under contract for next season after all. Preuss was definitely the preferred choice though.

He really is like a boat without a rudder whose opinion is so influenced by whichever way the wind is blowing in any given week.

I used to like listening to him but he is just so damned ingratiating and full of himself that always thinks his right that he is just unlistenable.
That is precisely how my view of Whateley has progressed over time as well.

Whateley doesn't take those seedings seriously - he freely admits to taking the piss.

No one should be taking those seedings seriously. But people can't help but take the bait.
