Just because no one died in the cyclone doesn't mean it was a fizzer. It was forecast perfectly.
Yeah ask the people in Cardwell and Mission beach how much of a fizzer it was.

Managed to dig up some more photos from the power outage in New York City:

The sight of the worlds financial heart in near pitch black darkness is amazing, regardless of whether the storm was a fizzer or not.

some crazy stuff over there.

but must admit i'm rather confused by this article:

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/w...g-place-at-the-wrong-time-20121031-28j47.html

Mainly, this part of the article

They did what dog owners do. They walked the dog. Jessie Streich-Kest was 24 and Jacob Vogelman was 23. They were friends living in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. About 8pm on Monday, during the howling viciousness of the storm, they ventured out with her dog, Max, a white pit bull mix.

i'm trying to work out what they were thinking? really struggling to understand why they'd take the dog for a walk at that particular time ? or did the storm hit a bit earlier than expected or something ?

Watched a bit of this on CNN and Fox News.

Some of the footage had people wandering the streets and stuff, was really strange. Someone was even riding their bike along the road on the coast, only to get completely knocked over by the water.

It's bad and all, but the stupidity of some people is unbelievable. Thousands of people have been told to evacuate - surely if you're staying you're inside at home or get to higher ground a few hours earlier than it hits?

There is a mentality among some here in the US that the media overhypes storms in order to attract ratings. It baffles me, personally, considering how much amazing weather the US gets and how much damage bad weather causes every year over here. Sometimes I think that the attitude is that unless a city is razed to the ground, it was a fizzer - ignoring all the small things that add up to a big disaster, like fallen trees, blocked drains, water damage in houses, etc. And those are the types of things that get people killed - not 50 foot tsunamis, but trees falling on your bedroom, or being swept away in a flash flood while foolishly driving, or whatnot.

Most people are sensible, but in such a large population, even a small percentage of people ignoring or making light of warnings means lots of people dead, injured or needing rescue.

A friend who lives in NY said that it wasn't that bad. The winds weren't that hard, there was a shit load of rain but she's laughing about the New Yorkers going on about it. Thinks the docklands gets stronger winds

Has she been down to Long Island's southern coast or Jersey coast? It may not have been blowing that badly where she was - but it surely was elsewhere. Though the main problem was the storm surge, not necessarily the winds.

I have a couple of friends studying over there at the moment - my friend in NJ was in some sort of refuge area but moved back to her apartment today, the other is in New York but closer to the Canadian border than Manhattan, he just had classes cancelled and was locked into the student res area.

Agree. I hate this logic.

It wasn't windy where I was therefore it wasn't windy anywhere else.

Didn't realise I was under myself...

I don't understand your point - I was just highlighting that in 60 odd posts of the thread, no one had mentioned ONCE any of the lives lost or property damage that occured from the SAME storm on neighbouring islands...

How does pointing this out make me 'under myself'? (I assume that's what you mean, considering you have told me to do the opposite)

We're waiting for someone as awesome of you to remind us of how shit and selfish we are.

Thanks for the reminder, you're awesome.

I am constantly reminded every single day about how shit and selfish I am -

Do you really need an internet message board poster to point out same for you? Interesting -
