Anyone involved or have any family in the stretch from Washington D.C. to Boston? Hurricane Sandy, dubbed 'Frankenstorm' is about to hit the east coast of the USA.

Can anyone with meteorology knowledge explain to me in non-sciencey terms exactly how this thing formed to be so big? Last I read, New York had to evacuate tens of thousands of people.

My boss was scheduled to fly in today, exactly where it hit. He moved his flight about 8 hours in so he can land then hes going to drive to where he was going anyway. -_-

From the sounds of things it's a hurricane (Hurricane Sandy) that would usually have been pushed out to sea (Eastwards) but for a high pressure systems that steered the hurricane west towards land. So whilst this hurricane is moving from west to east a winter cold front heading east-west combines with the hurricane along with some Arctic air and you get this 'Frankenstorm'.

Strong winds and heavy rain, any other day it would be called bad weather.

It won't be that bad. These forecasted "perfect storm's" never live up to expectations.

Is it still a hurricane though? This time of year the waters off the mid-atlantic coast would be too cold to sustain it so it's most likely an ex-hurricane/mid-latitude tropical storm that interacts with a cold front to produce this monster system. The real cold air will get dragged to one side of the low producing snow while the otherside should get rain

I'm in Toronto, and we're expecting plenty of wind and rain over the next couple of days. However, you wouldn't want to be relying on this site: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/caon0696?ref=thestar_en_city

Only 5-10mm of rain tomorrow, up to 5mm on Tuesday, and less than 1mm on Wednesday and Thursday! (The TV news just said we're expecting up to 100mm in the next couple of days)

Cheers for those webcam links, i'm just looking through a few of them now, the weather does look awful in the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty ones. lol.

Looking at those webcams it seems to be relatively calm at the moment with people still wandering around. Not many cars on the roads though (just a few taxis).

The best one is the Times Square crossroads as there is somebody moving the camera and zooming in etc. It will be interesting to see what happens to the hundreds of big screens when the storm hits!!

I thought that too. But i watched it for a bit, i think the camera movements are automated.

Over exaggerated bullshit from the US media. It'll be no more than a little bit of wind and rain.

Folks live in Northern NJ by the water, my dad lives right along the Hudson River. Got in touch with him, but not my mother. Freaking out right about now.
Easy for me to say, but try not to worry. A ton of people are without power all along the eastern seaboard, so it's to be expected that you can't get in touch with anyone.
