Autopsy Frees in Port and other games

"Comes off looking," not "is." I have suspicions about Nicholls, though it might just be confirmation bias from a few noticeably bad performances. Nobody has exactly analysed his performances empirically. It was an incompetent display on Saturday, and the umpires may have let emotion get the better of them. They are passionate about the game, that's why they do it. It's no excuse for performing badly, but it's not quite match-fixing, either.

Such a poor exhibition of AFL umpiring - bordering on bringing the game into disrepute. The game should demand full time AFL Professional umpires.

Gibbs got suspended so surely that's adds another the umpires errors for the game. The umpire didn't pay any free, you can clearly hear him say nothing in that. Incompetent umpiring, but at some stage we'll need to forget about it and worry about the stuff we can fix, and that's more talk on the field so players aren't caught as often, less sloppy tackles like the two from Jonas where in his clumsiness he throws out an arm for too high, etc. I seen a highlight of the game where 3 defenders fumbled the same ball on the ground like it was soap.

The club asking the league about umpiring decisions won't do anything.

The standard response will always be 'we were wrong'. Doesn't change the outcome, doesn't change future outcomes, pointless thing to do really.

Exactly. Actually cant believe people are going on about it still.

Greetings, I am the poster of the umpires video. Wow. I know this is a thread about free kicks but I want to let you know that I was more disgusted at some of our howlers than the umpiring - you can see that other video in the review thread, but when you lose by such a small margin you know that perhaps even just one bad decision can make the different between winning and losing.

In general even for a passionate Port supporter I rarely get upset at the umpires, and can look at the game in a balanced and logical way. Yes it makes sense that the umpire didn't pay that one but did this one. It was just the sum of all parts which tipped me over the edge. The Armfield call back for a trip that goes from a point to a goal, and yet Pittard gets tripped in exactly the same way and gets nothing. The clear throw from the tackle that leads to a goal and yet Boak gets pinged for exactly the same thing. Armfield again ducking into a tackle which we have all been shown in the last fortnight is now holding the ball. All we ask for is consistency, and we didn't get that on the weekend. Then the Henderson mark, Colquhoun touched mark and the bloody umpire mark adds to the frustration of what might have been if either of those goes the other way.

There has been some discussion on others I left out and my opinion was that they were 50/50 and I understand why they wouldn't be paid. Boak HTB/trip, I actually thought it was HTB and the tackler had one arm slide below the knees after/as he brought him down. Monfries held in the goalsquare looked like he was playing for it and Krak kicked the goal anyway. Trengove front on contact which led to a goal would have been pretty soft and he should have marked it.

So yes there were some bad calls, you could argue Carlton may have got a few softies, they missed some obvious free kicks of ours which you would expect considering we only got 10 for the whole game, and then the contentious decisions that swayed towards the home team/underdog. In the end it looks quite biased but I do not think it was in any way deliberate.

in a game thats decided by less than a goal, when you look at a free kick count of 21-3 in the first third and fourth quarters, you safely make the right assessment that the umps had a major imact on the result. marks that bounced, incorrect advantage etc, it didnt just lead to a goal or two carltons way but it lead to 6-8 dodgy goals. if it was just the odd decision you could handle it, but in my time of watching that is by far the most disgraceful display by the umps, even worse than 38-15.
yep we played poorly for most of the game, made terrible mistakes, burned the footy, dropped simple marks, fumbled but that is what we could control, in the end we were running all over them.

Umpire 15 is the worst ever, if he is umpiring (anyone) the game will be ruined. Cant believe he had so many finals last year. Complete joke.

Geez I am still fuming about the umpires as they won it for Carlton by their bad mistakes. Play on .. point .. called back .. goal ..
non mark .. ball hits ground.. goal ... there's 12 points
Will be bloody interesting to see Whistle Blowers today

Hey mate, just wondering if it would be possible to add the monfries being thrown in the goal square about a minute after hoff to the video, also the Trengrove in the goal square where he dropped the mark due to front on contact resulting in a Carlton goal. Carlton also scored a goal when they were kicking to the left of screen where the player was on the 50m mark threw the ball over his head to a player who ran in and goaled, think it was in the second quarter.

Time to move on.... Control what we can control. No point sending letters and effectively communicating with a brick wall. id love to see a few more tackles from us like gibbs layed on the weekend. We dont do that though as we are jelly in the middle.
He's mindset was right anyway... Time for the guys to sit back on their “break they dont deserve” and watch our Finals from last year..

That video was on news.com. Did you make it?

I get your meaning and agree, but that tackle was potentially lethal. One thing being hard, but tackling a player, pinning his arms, then effectively slinging him head first into the ground isn't the way to do it, in my eyes anyway.

Voss was a beast, it is a little puzzling to think this guy is training our midfielders, who have effectively turned into fumbling soft *****.

People can waffle on about tactics and zones , etc but It is pretty simple to me, the game is team sport but each and every individual needs to take accountability in the contest, each bloke needs to understand they will back there team mate up or die trying. Funny how fast things can turn around with that attitude. The skill and fitness is there overall.

From watching that quickly, the armfield one they quite clearly get completely wrong and the whistle was long before he kicked it.
Secondly, the touched call for the late mark was so late it can only have been a reaction to Simpson claiming he touched it.
