Fremantle outside premiership window

March 6, 2008 - 10:31AM

When asked how the AFL career of Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich may be remembered in years to come, coach Mark Harvey has no hesitation in mentioning names such as Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett.
But the comparisons are not meant as a compliment.
Instead, Harvey says the inability of those legends to win a premiership, despite countless individual achievements, should act as a further spur to the 26-year-old to help finally heal the continuously broken purple hearts of Dockers fans.
"It is not individual, it is about what he does from a team aspect now ... he needs to have team success," Harvey said.
"He needs to keep adding to his game, and that is how you have longevity in the game, and he is smart enough to do that.
"And if you ask guys like Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett they would love to have a premiership in their careers as well."
Still with more wooden spoons than premierships, that fact is made harder to bear by the three flags won by the Eagles up the road.
But as Harvey embarks on his first full season as a senior AFL coach, he does admit some envy of West Coast - but nothing more fervent, at least on his part.
"There is always a little bit of envy I guess on the back of them winning a couple of premierships," Harvey said.
"This team and this club has grown up with them, but we are pretty powerful now and we are not seen as little brother any more.
"We move on and do our best, but don't get entwined in the rivalry I guess.
"I don't (hate them). I think if you get to that level in football you are probably getting obsessed and you need to step back a bit."
There are a few at Fremantle who do have that elusive premiership - Des Headland, Mark Johnson, Peter Bell, Josh Carr and of course Harvey himself.
But none of them have a title with the Dockers.
And as Fremantle enter 2008, the fabled premiership window is still open, but certainly not letting in as much breeze as it once did.
With the oldest list in the competition, the Dockers chose to add even more experience in the draft with Essendon cast-offs Johnson and Kepler Bradley adding more black and red seasoning to the Dockers' melting pot.
But balancing that is an new coaching team, with Harvey admitting blending in the additions of Dean Wallis, Chris Scott and Chris Bond into the club was another challenge in an already crucial year.
"Hopefully with the new coaching structure we have got, we have got that right, but it might take the guys a couple of weeks to really understand it, and grab hold of what we need to do," Harvey said.
"It has been fascinating to spend three months with the guys and have meeting after meeting to work through situations.
"And to see how they evolve as coaches, how they talk to players, how they coach what they do on the training track, how they conduct themselves in the media."
Within that media, the scrutiny of Fremantle this year is likely to be as high as it has ever been, given last year's on-field failures and off-field lapses by Jeff Farmer, Chris Tarrant, Headland and others.
And Harvey admits the pressure on his current captain will also be felt by predecessor Peter Bell as he embarks on a season playing in Perth while living in Geraldton, 400km away.
"I was one of the key guys to talk him out of retirement, because he was playing so well," Harvey said.
"He is super intelligent, so therefore he would know what situation he is getting himself into. More often than not he would be making the right decision.
"He is naturally a guy that can get his fitness quite quickly so he is lucky, it is just a matter of him being an effective player."

So Pav's a great player but the team havn't won a premiership. Gee what insight. No byline, I wonder which Hack put that crap together

You guys are still in your premiership window, it's just the crap gameplan and style you dish up on the field that is the problem. That game against the crows you played looked like the western bulldogs with bs short kicking and 1000 handballs to players that were hot. If you just get that run from defence going better you may click like Geelong did last year and who knows. I did have ya picked for top 4 again until i saw your pre-season clash against the crows now I reckon you'll be in the bottom half of the 8 unless ya click.

dont take too much from the NAB cup games champ, the defence was a worry but we didn't have our stable back 6 playing together in it either.
just a few experiments that went horribly wrong i think.

Surely your a more astute footy fan that.Have you taken into account players being played out of position and other Harvey experiments. Sure some of the play was horrible, but it's pre season. You can't base a whole season prediction on one game.
It's not like you guys were sensational in the Grand Final or your first NAB Cup game. Shall we judge you solely on the basis of those games?

I agree with you and see that you are not having a dig, just pointing out the simple truth. Adelaide will probably take out the final tomorrow as they seem to be super fit and prepared. The handballing in that game was stupendous and I can't see us playing like that in the real season. I just can't wait for the real thing to start.

I don't know what sort of team Port is fielding this week, but with Harves saying we will be "full strength", anything short of flogging the Power will be a failure.

R. Walls didnt say as much last year, but what he said was possibly wrong but definately blunt.

There is no excuse for Pav this year.
I'll do a bit of crystal ball gazing. If pav wins the Brownlow we will be in the granny.
I reckon he is good enough.

We are pretty close to full strength too Rabbitoh (3 or 4 starting 18 not playing), should make for an interesting game IMO.

Its going to be very hot over here on Sat (36c), so that may throw a spanner in the workings of both coaches I would say.

You may be right because you guys weren't that bad against us today. The problem was we just dominated the play and you couldn't get your hands on it, but impressively when you did you seemed to score easily in the first half, but when we started to convert our control of the game in the last half your boys just coudn't get near it and I couldn't tell if your game plan was the handball stuff.

I really still think you guys have a great list and reckon you could do a Geelong but I've seen some concerning signs re- that gameplan, but today more concerning was the inability to go with a top line midfield like ours.

The midfield, is, has been, will always be our problem. We just don't have the cattle in there to cover Burgoyne's, Pearce, Chad baby etc. Especially without Belly and J Carr not in there. It does look pretty worrying, but once we get an idea on these kids i.e. Palmer, O'Brien, Ibbotson then we can tell what the deal is.
