Rory Wright

Another product from the Sandringham footy factory, Wright showed some real versatility in his game this year. He started the season as a midfielder, with his strong frame and legs allowing him to collect the ball from contest and explode away from congestion. Wright also showed clean hands below his knees, a good overhead mark and a penetrating left boot. Initially left out of the Vic Metro squad, he was added after some good early-season form and went on to be a constant feature for the side at the under-18 national championships. However, he never truly cracked into a major role in the midfield rotation. Upon returning to Sandringham, Wright initially resumed his role in the midfield and had 30 disposals and five clearances in a round 13 match against the Calder Cannons. But he was shifted to halfback after that, which is seen as his more likely role at the next level. Wright displayed good balance between his defending and attacking games at the tail end of the year, with his aerial work also catching the eye. He finished as the Dragons’ second-highest ranked player on the ground in the Coates Talent League Grand Final in September, logging 22 disposals, seven marks and six rebound 50s in a loss to the Eastern Ranges.

This has been a blast watching from the sidelines! Great work go_the_dockers 😃

(As a spectator I don’t want to butt in, but looks like I’m about to… but can anyone put together the full list of which club picked which player and at what number? ie in alphabetical order:
Adelaide: Jevan Phillipou (18); Thomas Burton (42); Talor Byrne (45)
etc etc
That would be awesome! 🙌🏼)

And then can someone

Maybe Chris25 give a breakdown of each drafts picks and grade them? Like what the so called experts at fox and the AFL do

It’s a good effort and interesting final mock draft. The one call that does stand out a bit and relates to Freo is Toby Whan at 36. I’d be surprised if he goes anywhere before pick 50 and a very good chance slips through to rookie.

The regular comments from Walls and Brierty around list size and being flexible at the draft makes me certain we will get 2 picks done definitely and then wait on Whan hopeful that he will he get through to rookie draft if bid on late in the ND then we will match and be nimble/flexible with our list size plans (ie. 36-6 vs 37-5).

Fingers crossed he gets through the main draft. For mine 36 is a very early reach.

Mock Draft Recap Part 1 (as requested)
featuring ratings according to 2big2strom (definitely not requested)

Adelaide Crows (Sherriff Incorporated)
Picks: 16, 48, 55
Drafted: Jevan Phillipou (18), Thomas Burton (42), Talor Byrne (45)
Rating: B. Phillipou will be a good fit for Adelaide, although it's unusual seeing them straight up taking SA based talent, rather than waiting for them to be drafted early and developed by Northern clubs, then luring them back with big $$ and shitty draft picks. Not sure why they would pick up a retired 2016 Sailing Olympian but hey, anything to 1 up their cross-town Port rival.

Brisbane Lions (Dump Truck)
Picks: 17, 23, 44, 51, 59
Drafted: Dan Annable (Rorting freebie matched bid #3), Fergus McFayden (50)
Rating: C. Their hands were tied really, what with that campaigner over at WCE bidding on their top academy prospect for the year. Don't think the rest of the league are going to lose sleep over the Lions being forced to pay a reasonable price for their top pick - especially given the 50 top 5 prospects they've received over the past 5 years. And I'm sure Lions won't be losing any sleep either as they sleepwalk into their 3rd straight premiership.

Carlton (Piggy Smalls)
Picks: 9, 11, 43, 54
Drafted: Harry Dean (F/S matched bid #10), Lachy Dovaston (14), Jack Ison (F/S matched bid #24)
Rating: A+. It makes me vomit in my mouth to say that Blues are making out like absolute bandits. Dovaston is a fantastic pick up for the blues, sandwiched either side with two highly rated father and sons picks. Sadly I think they will do even better on real draft night. Harry Dean has even been spotted at training with a hat on, so that tells you all you need to know about the calibre of that young man.

Collingwood (go_the_dockers)
Picks: 39, 45, 56
Drafted: Zac McCarthy (NGA matched bid 25), Riley Onley (47), Rory Wright (52)
Rating: B+. After doing the hard yards in getting all the other LM campaigners in one room, Collingwood received little thanks with their hand forced with a bid coming from North for Zac McCarthy. Perhaps a little steeper than Collingwood would have liked to pay, however no one was buying into their coyness prior to the draft season that they 'may or may not' match for McCarthy. Grabbed a couple of other exciting youth after LMs raided the bottom half of the draft.

Essendong (ubiquitous226)
Picks: 5, 6, 21, 27, 30
Drafted: Dyson Sharp (8), Sam Cumming (9), Mitch Marsh (21), Adam Sweid (NGA matched bid 26), Matthew LeRay (31)
Rating: A+. It's a bit hard to **** up when you have an ubiquitous amount of picks in the draft isn't it. As the Dodo era fades at the Dons, a new LM arrives, with a different kind of campaigner about them. Cutthroat, ruthless, and willing to make other clubs pay up (something Dodo wished he did). Essendon have selected a bunch of talented youngsters with a good spread of skills and positions. Marsh at 21 is a steal. The future may be extremely young for the baby bombers but it certainly has a glimmer of hope.

Fremantle (_007_)
Picks: 20, 47
Drafted: Latrelle Pickett (20), Lachlan Carmichael (39)
Rating: B. People often accuse Freo's LM of getting on the beers early. We have to start asking the question: and what the **** are they smoking? Selecting Lachlan Carmichael (who?) over Fred Rodriguez. Clearly they rate freo's current list extremely highly, filling their most obvious gap of a small forward with mature and ready to go recruit Latrelle Pickett in the first round. We have seen Freo make left field picks previously and they turn out to be genius, so the jury is still out on this one. Although we are willing to believe. Will be interested to hear Chris25 thoughts.

Geelong (Catalpa)
Picks: 19, 40, 60
Drafted: Oskar Taylor (19), Taj Murray (37), Cody Curtin (51)
Rating: A. It's annoying watching a successful club be campaigners at the trade table and then walk in smugly to the draft only to....excel? At what part of the footy season are Geelong going to shit the bed? Even their offseason was swept under the rug as quickly as Dangerfield was sent to chaperone BS at the Brownlow. Oskar Taylor is going to thrive in Geelong's defensive system and we are all going to be annoyed in 3-4 years time about it.

Gold Coast Suns (academicbowl)
Picks: 15, 18, 24, 28, 29, 36, 52
Drafted: Zeke Uwland (Rorting freebie matched bid #2), Dylan Paterson (Rorting freebie matched bid #6), Beau Addinsall (Rorting freebie matched bid #29), Jai Murray (49)
Rating: B. Yeah yeah yeah, this draft class for GC will look amazing in 5 years time. Does that make their drafting good? No. Spare me. They entered the draft with more top 30 picks than Freo have experienced in the last 5 years. They were always going to walk out with a bunch of talent. Coupled with the Nepo babies given the green light to let JUH play on the Gold Coast with impunity, and the AFL probably paid for 5 more cookbooks for the Tracc, I'm disgusted. How does academicbowl sleep at night?!

Giants (Docker82)
Picks: 12, 35
Drafted: Jacob Farrow (15), Tom Blamires (34)
Rating: B+. Some pretty astute drafting given what little picks they had. Once again, GWS continued their tradition of picking highly rated WA talent, where they will hold them captive and brainwash them into thinking Sydney is a better city than Perth (it isn't). Cogs is still trying to find his way home 13 years later. Although tbf, Sydney is 1000% a better city than Bunno. GWS didn't have a lot of room to play around at the draft, after #1 LM campaigner SOS ****ed them over in real time by promising young Aleer a bounty that didn't exist. All in all, not bad. Maybe they need to run over someone's dog earlier if they want to be a LM of a real club.

Yep agreed

Piggy Smalls wanted to bid on him to force Freos hand but it didn't work.

Mock Draft Recap Part 2 (as requested)
featuring ratings according to 2big2strom (definitely not requested)

Hawks (m01och)
Picks: 10, 22
Drafted: Oliver Greeves (13), Archie Ludowyke (22)
Rating: B. Hawthorn somewhat redeemed themselves after their whole offseason bullshit. Once again trying to lure away club captains and then spitting the dummy when it doesn't come to fruition. Ollie Greeves is the perfect big-bodied clean midfielder they are after. I suspect they won't be missing Worpel any time soon. It will be interesting to see how they develop Archie, it also potentially signals the chatter around Temu version of the Lizard (Weddle) may be true. LM got absolutely shafted when a sleeping list manager stole their preferred 2nd pick in Mitch Marsh. I guess in this case: you snooze, you do not in fact lose.

Melbourne Demons (Lach72 )
Picks: 7, 8, 37
Drafted: Aiden Schubert (11), Sam Grlj (12), Blake Oudshorn-Bennier (35)
Rating: B. Took a very unconventional approach for Melb, selecting a potentially/actually good key fwd prospect. Interested to see how this plays out, given I don't think I was born yet when the Dees last had a good key forward. Also selected just the third double barrelled player this year. I don't know what that means but it has to count for something.

North Melbourne (serial_thrilla)
Picks: 25, 26, 46, 57
Drafted: Blake Thredgold (27), Harley Barker (28), Liam Hetherton (46),
Rating: B+ Unlike the flog of a LM of old, North did not muck around this draft period. Taking the best available talent at picks 27 + 28. Setting the tone of the draft (and herding most other LMs like the lost sheep we are), North helped keep everyone on track and accountable. Unfortunately, on account of being North, no amount of Thredgold or Barker is going to save them from themselves.

Port Adelaide (Tonga Bob)
Picks: 49
Drafted: Leon Kickett (43)
Rating: F. **** me. The most disruptive list manager of this year and he came with swagger and arrogance (that he shouldn't have). You'd be mistaken for thinking that for all the impatience, that @Tonga_Bob would be ready and willing to step up when it was time. WRONG. Didn't even bid on a single player themselves and adding insult to inury, didn't even fulfil his promises of passing at pick 103, instead pops up at pick 43 and nabs Leon Kickett. Probably somewhat fitting that their draft played out this way, given that's exactly how talented goalsneak Kickett is going to feed on the ball and rename Adelaide Oval's Eddie Bett's pocket to Kickett's Pocket in 2026.

Richmond (King Huskii)
Picks: 3, 4, 38
Drafted: Sullivan Robey (5), Xavier Taylor (7), Sam Swadling (44)
Rating: A+. With the amount of carry on coming out of Richmond's camp, you would be forgiven for thinking that local resident King Huskii had been replaced by Tom Petroro. Banging on the table with impatience at every slight delay, you can see why with the LM was fired up and ready to pounce on the talent that they did. They also didn't shy away from making other clubs play for their rorting freebies - placing a bid on Dylan Paterson. After being one of few clubs who actually admit they are going full rebuild and then committing to that rebuild in 2024, the Tigs have added to their core youngsters with some undeniable talent in Robey and Taylor. Robey is going to be the steal of this draft imo.

St Kilda (Piggy Smalls)
Picks: 50
Drafted: Toby Whan (36)
Rating: F. But also A+. Let me explain. Hands down, this was the most accurate and believable imitation of any LM. Oscar worthy performance of embodying the deranged campaigner SOS himself. Bidding on Toby Whan way higher than he deserves and for once, Freo having the resolve to turn around and give him the big middle finger, a beautiful scene. Sainters brought in a bunch of overpaid hacks in TDK, JSOS, Liam Ryan and then drafted a prospect that needs a huge amount of development, absolutely chefs kiss. Feel really bad for Whan though :( Goodbye AFL career.

Sydney (academicbowl)
Picks: 31, 32, 42
Drafted: Max King (Rorting freebie matched bid #23), Harry Kyle (Rorting freebie matched bid #30)
Rating: C. It must be hard to be the LM of two of the rortiest rorting clubs in the past 10 years. But i'm sure that's no bother when you have silk pillow cases and wipe your arse with hungji dollar bills thanks to your wage coming out of some secret AFL soft-soft-soft cap. I feel like Sydney are historically much better at hiding the talent level of their academy players, so feel it is way too hard to give an accurate rating on this. All I can say is it is predictable (and probably exactly the way it plays out).

West Coast Eagles (2big2strom)
Picks: 1, 2, 13, 34, 41, 58
Drafted: Willem Duursma (1), CDT (4), Josh Lindsay (16), Kye Fincher (33), Cam Nairn (38), Tylah Williams (NGA matched bid), Fred Rodriguez
Rating: C to B. Top half, boring. Could have gone harder and made the rest of you campaigners pay up a lot more than I did. I genuinely don't believe Duursma nor CDT are going to be considered top 10 picks in 5 years time. (And hopefully I'm not wrong so we can all watch WC suffer a little longer). The strength of this hand is what is done later in the draft. Having been pipped at the post for Jacob Farrow, Josh Lindsay is probably a better fit for the Eagles if you don't take into account go home factor when you are the worst team the league has ever seen. Cam Nairn at 38 is a steal and should never have dropped this far. If WC actually end up with Fincher, Nairn, Williams and Rodriguez I will cry.

Western Bulldogs
Picks: 14, 33, 53
Drafted: Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (17), Louis Emmett (32), Will Darcy (53)
Rating: C+? Very interesting first choice. I can understand the excitement of going for the best rated double-barrelled prospect available at your pick. But do WB of all teams really need another attacking midfielder that's on the shorter side? Then again, they were after Ras, so maybe this is exactly what they need. Emmett and Darcy round out the selections nicely. I am assuming that Darcy will be developed as a defensive option in this scenario, given the gaping KPD sized hole in their back half.

TL;DR

Adelaide: Okay
Brisbane: Okay for cheating campaigners
Carlton: Begrudgingly very good. Top 3 of the mock draft class.
Collingwood: Okay, strengths were demonstrated elsewhere (running this clown show)
Essendon: Very good, annoyingly good, very LUCKILY good. Top 3 of the mock draft class.
Fremantle: Either very good or very bad.
Geelong: Ugh, **** you Geelong
GC: very good but also how easy is it for them to very good?!
Giants: not bad considering
Hawks: decent
Demons: Good but feels unlikely knowing the dees
North: good
Port: deserve relegation
Richmond: Very good. Fighting for position #1 in top of mock draft class.
Saints: deserves an oscar
Sydney: okay
WCE: sometimes good, sometimes maybe boring
WB: okay

The Talent Scout do I get a pass mark?
Well thrilla, all I can say about that, is two words, impressive & attentive, looking to see who was already selected and who was left, your three selections for us are pretty much spot on, while its all a bit of fun, so many times on the "net" I see people selecting for us that either don't do their homework or just think that player will suit us because of whatever reason they give. One last thing, if the bombers get those five players, it will be their greatest draft this century, in my opinion. :)

I was hoping _007_ would match and then I was going to take Rodriguez. It was just for a bit of shits and giggles as the draft was moving incredibly slowly. Plus, being SOS carries a bit of responsibility to act like a floglord IMO.

He didn't even mention that you tried to draft a kid from next year's draft.
I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!
