Freo gives Carlton the old heave-ho

A SICKENING injury which led to an ambulance driving onto the field to take Fremantle recruit Kepler Bradley to hospital was the main talking point out of Freo’s 14-point win over Carlton in the ARTH AFL Challenge at SuperSport Park in Pretoria.

The Blues rallied late to cut the eventual margin after Fremantle had kicked away in the second half to lead by almost six goals at one stage.

They eventually cruised to victory 11.12 (78) to 9.10 (64), although both teams were fielding teams well below their best.

The first sightings of a couple of highly-prized recruits were also keenly observed, but it was a collision involving Bradley and Carlton youngster Shaun Hampson that hushed the crowd, and stopped the match for about 10 minutes.

Bradley suffered concussion in the knock but the good news was he was back at the ground by the three-quarter time break after being checked over by doctors.

After a dull opening term, the match came alive when Hampson, who impressed in the ruck early for the Blues, made contact with Bradley who was at ground level after diving on a loose ball.

Contact appeared to be made around the shoulder region, with Bradley hitting his head on the firm SuperSport Park surface and lying motionless for several moments as trainers and medical staff rushed to the former Bomber’s aid.

Extra concern among spectators mounted for Bradley when the 22-year-old appeared to be convulsing on the ground before being loaded into the ambulance, but coach Mark Harvey later said the courageous youngster had simply been trying to get up.

Fremantle players flew the flag for their new teammate, with big man Aaron Sandilands and tough nut Matthew Carr leading the charge.

Hampson had simply arrived late for the contest with Bradley and did look to have his arm tucked in at the moment of impact, although the high contact was noted by an umpire further afield who paid a free kick as a result of the incident. No report was laid.

It did seem to charge Fremantle however, which had trailed 2.4 to 1.2 at the first change after Blue Adam Hartlett had nailed two goals in the opening term.

Overall Hartlett booted three across half forward in the first half in a lively display for Carlton.

But Fremantle kicked five goals to three in the second quarter to assert its control, with acting skipper Des Headland booting two.

Each team was allowed to play a maximum of 32 players and both coaches made the most of the opportunity to experiment and blood some of their younger players, swinging the changes at half time.

Whether it was those changes that made the difference or not, Harvey’s men gained control in the third term, using the ball efficiently and booting four goals to nil to establish their match-winning break.

Chris Tarrant provided an option all evening while smaller forwards Chris Mayne, Ryan Crowley and Ryan Murphy looked threatening.

No.1 draft pick Matthew Kreuzer gained his first touch in the second term, a handball in the middle of the ground and, while he failed to have any great influence on the contest, the former Northern Knight drilled a long bomb in the final term to show his enormous potential.

Likewise, Fremantle’s highly-touted draft pick Rhys Palmer didn’t have a huge game, but it wasn’t a night for big possession winners.

The night marked a successful return to football for Nick Stevens, who played his first serious match since injuring his neck early last season.

Stevens played most of the first half before sitting out the remainder.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said taking off some of his more credentialed players had disrupted the line-up – although he did see some positives.

“I think when we did have a more experienced team out there we showed that we could move the ball with a lot more precision,” he said.

“I think we got a little bit destructured in the second half with the young kids that came on, but that’s what it was about for us – the experience that each player would get.”

Ratten pointed to Michael Shields’ first game of AFL and the performances of Hampson, rookie David Ellard and Jake Edwards as positives the Blues would take away from the match.

Harvey, whose side showed it could move the ball quickly and would again possess some exciting attacking options, was content with what his side achieved from the night.

“Yeah it was pleasing, but once again it’s the first game so you know we’re still working things out,” Harvey said.

“In the third quarter there we really sort of put a space in the game and got our ball movement right and didn’t give Carlton time to get back and crowd our forward line.”

Carlton stars Chris Judd, Brendan Fevola, Brad Fisher and Richard Hadley were among the absentees, while Jeff Farmer didn’t play for Freo despite having made the trip to South Africa.

Neither team played a full side, although looking at the Freo squad, it appears they went in with more experience. Still, there is nothing to be read into the result beside the performance of individuals. Pleased to see Hampson play well, and particularly pleased with Hartlett's 3 goals - although it was a nothing match, his attack on the ball last year when given a chance at AFL level was impressive. Given our almost non-existent CHF options, I'm hoping Harts can have an extended run without injury and be given a chance at CHF.

Correct.. I havnt seen enough of Harts to make a judgement on whether he could nail down CHF all year, but when you look at it he doesn't have much competition. Waite seems as though he will play at CHB, Fisher is a better prospect in a pocket or a flank for mine, Cloke should do stints in the ruck along with hammer and the hack. The other only possible option for me is Kruezer, its a lot of pressure to put on a young blokes shoulders though. So my bet is Harts to have a break out season and show people what hes really got.

Pav,Bell, J Carr just to name a few that I can think of that are not there. It cuts both ways both teams were missing alot of there best.

IF he can get over the injuries which have decimated his career to date.

Harts, Hampson, Edwards, as well as a couple of the new guys........that's all you'd want fromt he game really.........that and Bradley being KO'd.......LOL..........you can take the boy out of Essendon, but you can't take Essendon out of the boy.

Lets assume we both had players missing, looks like we've caught up around 10 goals from our last meeting, and just quietly I'd back our "outs" to have a bigger impact than theirs.........but thats just IMHO.:thumbsu:

Quite happy with this as a first up.

BRING ON PORT!!!:D

Agreed. The absence of Fev & Fisher (98 goals between them last season) & a bloke called Judd are massive outs for any team. Good games from Hartlett, Hampson, Russell & particularly Murphy are the positive signs from this game. We know the inclusion of Fev, Fisher, Judd & with Stevens eventually playing full games is important, but of equal importance is improvement from the younger players on our list.

I think we have found something special in Shaun Hampson. His development continues to come along in leaps & bounds (no pun intended). I think within the next 2-3 years the debate over taking Jetta or Hampson will be put to bed & it will be a case of Wayne Hughes delivering on what he gets paid for.

Anyone care to run an "average age" through the best for each side?;)

Nice to see Russ in there to.:thumbsu:

Not really fussed out about the result, just glad we got through unscathed and some of our youngin's had a chance to shine

Loving how Hartlett kicked goals accross half forward. One thing i really hate is people getting on the back of talented sports people who consistently get injured and are unable to produce their best for a consistent period (a la Shane Watson)

On ya Harts.

That's what i noticed too. when people who have Fox get to watch it this week i'd love for some detailed reports on certain individuals. would be especially interested in the likes of Russel, Edwards, and Shields

Also does anybody know if Aisake played?
