Would be great if it was Hayden. Can you imagine him at the Captains Meeting pre season in Melbourne. Would annoy EVERYONE! To be fair though I don't see any other players who get as emotional as him and ...well...he IS vocal!

For eloquence, presence and sheer respect though Fyfe is the obvious standout.

Still want Hayden!;)

Matt Deboer. Fyfe isn't in the leadership group so has a few more years before he gets the gig
matty for me too. his onfield leadership is streets ahead of fyfe's. fyfe's the better player but i think deboer could lead like lingy did at the cats.

Fyfey for mine too. Not til after he's won his Brownlow this year of course, don't want to put too much pressure on the young fella.

Also, if it were Balla, can someone confirm for me whether the Weags fans have ever booed a coin toss before?

Better to do a Geelong and have a workhorse as captain or look at Collingwood and Maxwell, or Carlton and Judd being given the flick. Having a workhorse as Captain takes pressure off the stars to do their thing - I love Fyfe but wouldn't want him as captain until he's completely come of age

Fremantle forward Matthew Pavlich will happily step down as captain when he feels the time is right, saying he has already discussed a succession plan with the club.

Translation: If Fyfe is ready to take over before Pav retires he will step aside.

De Boer is my pick. I don't think it's a coincidence that he's been doing a lot more of the talking last season, and even during this off season.

The captain doesn't necessarily need to be the best player in the team, but they do need to lead. MDB leads by example, he already has the talking side of it under control and was WA's captain at junior state level. Mightn't be a star, but adds a lot to the team that isn't flashy or obvious... and sacrifices his game to do the team thing, helps make the guys around him play better. Has improved his kicking a lot, and that was always the main knock on him.

Fyfe may be the eventual captain, but De Boer will be next I reckon. Cameron Ling and Brett Kirk are good examples of the type of player he is, and they did pretty well in those roles I reckon.

What happens if you're the workhorse type and you're incredibly gifted?

Looking at the way he's completely transformed his body in just four preseasons I think Fyfe qualifies as the workhorse type.

He'll have the Brownlow soon to confirm it.

4 preseasons isnt that little, especially for a midfielder. Im sure he would make a great captain, but I would prefer if he tidied up his kicking a little and pushed his effective disposal rate a bit higher before he has to worry about what the rest of the team are doing..

I think the fact that he has the flaw with his kicking not being perfect and he is still able to have such a huge impact on games and stand out so clearly from other stars on the field makes Fyfey all the more impressive.

He is more impressive for having flawed kicking?

I didnt want to overstate it, cos I dont think its that bad, just meant I think he should be given the chance to worry about himself for a few years.

Fyfe is a freak... He is mentioned by other players in the same breath as Mundy and Barlow as first choice midfielders except he's only 21. I believe we have no idea how good he is in terms of how he moves and gains possessions, which umpires notice and opponents fear because the ball seems to follow him, not him following the ball. He reminds me a little of Lenny Hayes.

Except with a bigger kick and aerial prowess

Matt DeBoer as captain will mean we have the best looking captain competition sewn up for the next six years. Every single time I go to the game with a friend of mine she drools over him, you've seen her - she is the skinny little brunette leaning over the dugout drooling on him.

His physical commitment has never been questioned, I can only imagine how much of a wrecking ball he could be if he felt the pressure of the captaincy urging him into a contest.

Fyfe needs to have a season where he doesn't get injured, doesn't get surgery and focuses entirely on his game. Not for any other reason than our captain needs to be able to get on the park most weeks of the year and, going by previous years, I couldn't guarantee Nathan Fyfe will play 18 games, let alone 25 next year.

If his shoulders are fine, this year will be big for him and he could move into the leadership group next year. I wonder if it's even something he would want? The hard working country boys I know are all happy to let someone else do the glamorous stuff while they go about getting the job done behind the scenes.
