Future Draft/Trading Strategy

If there were cap problems it's unlikely to have been to the extent of wages lost through this trade period. Is it possible that we may be able to front end some contracts in 2021 or pay less than 100% of the cap? Langdon and Beams' wage will almost certainly be off the books in 2022. Cox is reportedly spreading his wage too. Obviously there will be pay rises to existing players, but conceivably we could have at least 1.5 to 2 million spare for 2022. That's a big war chest.

Finally someone at the club admitted that these trades were a "strategy" and the club wants to be at the "pointy end of the draft" and in a position to "compete for out of contract talent". CEO Mark Anderson at the end of this interview (12:46).

There's a nice list of names who are free agents at the end of 2021. Some may have re-signed in the subsequent months. Full list in the link, including some who would be a good fit, but Cripps, Merrett, Kelly, Sheed and Bontempelli stand out even if some are no chance. Obviously there's also out of contract players who aren't yet free agents and we currently have a 2021 first that we won't use.

Wages:

Treloar 600k, Stephenson 500k, Phillips 500k, Scharenberg 300k, Beams 400k, Langdon 500k

* figures are a guess based off media reports
Why bother re-signing Mason 21 should be his last year

It's been reported by the club that he had triggered an extension, but opted to extend his deal instead. With the money out we may not need to spread his dollars across multiple years. I disagree that 2021 should be his last year though especially this far out. Looked better once his sight returned, plus nobody else is looks able to provide the same presence at this stage. Worst case he'd provide handy depth in '22 if someone surpasses him in '21.

Giving away all those second rounders with treloar fmd... so we have pick 14 and 16. We want first rounders but then How do we cover a bid for reef? What’s our next pick? 65 (90pts) and 70 (39pts). So 129pts....

even if reef somehow falls past pick 16, where do we find points for him? Reports I’ve read have him 15-25ish. Knowing our luck likely pick 10.

I’m no expert but the only sense I can make is the club believes reef will go top 10 now, and we wanted 14 for this scenario? 🤷‍♂️

Correct me if i am wrong but we can always go into deficit of our second rounder next year if absolutely required which wont matter too much as it'll be all going towards Daicos points anyway.

He had a deal for next year but it seems that the club might have negotiated a further extension. The implication is that 2022 will be at a lower salary than 2021, but no one knows except the club and player. You would hope that Collingwood has said to Cox, if you want a further year then you will have to be paid less. You would hope that the club would say that to any player who isnt a consistent performer.

If we are trying to plug a hole with Cox still in 22 we are really going absolutely nowhere. He is one of the blokes who have to be moved on

Ultimately I think he will be, but rather than plugging in another short term and potentially limited option I hope the club does so via top end draft talent.

We don’t invest in forwards. We have taken two forwards with a first round pick in 15 years under Hine one was a father son. Can’t see that changing

Ben Brown was the best immediate option outside of the draft and we seemingly weren't interested. How do you propose we do it?

Change our approach, we don’t seem to value key forwards and it hurts us time and time again. We have to commit to landing the next key forward to come on the market. Either way I wouldn’t bother with Cox beyond 21 you know what you are going to get and 9 weeks out of 10 it will be below par

Some questions:

(1) How does it work with Reef McInnes? If another club picks him at (for example) 10, does that mean we have to cash in our pick 14, get a points discount (20% of whatever 10 is worth) and if there’s change left over then that becomes a pick later down the draft? But alternatively, if another club picks him at (for example) 19, then we have already spent our 14 and 16 by that stage, so we need to cash in whatever piddly picks we have later on (65, 70, 75) and go into deficit? So we could technically end up with 3 first round players?

(2) If we do go into points deficit, how does that affect our ability to pick up Nick Daicos next year?

(3) Do we have any rookies we need to elevate?

No disrespect intended, but if you’re saying that on 2020 form Stevo’s loss isn’t much, you’d also have to say that Grundy is just an average ruckman. You can’t have it both ways.

On that basis who are our “elite core players” of whom you only need 5 or 6? I’d say Moore, Grundy if fit, with Maynard and Adams a rung below. We have a lot of ground to make up to create a premiership team.
Moore, Grundy, DeGoey, Adams they are the four who are peak age and could easily all be AA in 2021 and we would be challenging again.

We still have Pendles, Sidey and Howe who are older but hopefully still able to give quality seasons in 2021

Get those seven to all play 20+ games in 2021 and we will be around the mark.

And yeah, Rendell speaks pretty well noting that we do have kids like T.Brown, Kelly, IQ, Daicos, Murphy who he believes should be playing most weeks as the talent is there.

This is correct, we get a pick back equivalent to points left over. If there's no points left over it lands at the back of the draft.

From what I gather the deficit is applied against the round where a bid occurs. If the bid is at the back end of the first round it comes next years first and pushes it back in the draft. If a bid occurs in the second round it comes off next years second, this would be the best outcome for us.

(3) Do we have any rookies we need to elevate?
Of ours rookies:

Dunn and Broomhead are no longer on the list

Keane, Wilson, Tohill and Noble have been on the rookie list for 2 years, so we can retain them as rookies in 2021.

Mihocek, Madgen and Appleby need to be promoted.

Expect those picks to come in a fair way. Dogs will use 2-3 on JUH, Swans will be the same with one of their academy kids. Clubs may only make 1-2 picks.

65 could conceivably end up as 45 as an example

If we trade out of the 1st round of next seasons draft then any deficit can only be applied to our 2nd round selection onwards regardless of whether a bid is placed for Reef in the 1st round of this years draft.

Oops. No. Should Appleby remain he'll need to be promoted

Three rookie list promotions? Gee, there’s a story right there!

If we’re not forced to match a bid for Reef before pick 16, then our list strategy becomes 14, 16, Reef, and then the rest are rookie promotions.
