Fyfe is awesome. I love people who aren't afraid to shine and be as amazing as they can be.
It's pretty frustrating that there's a real stigma against it in Australian culture.
Imagine if Fyfe started talking like Lebron; everybody would lose their minds!

Exactly! Something about our culture that mocks and dislikes this. It should be everyone's aim. But in Australia if you're doing well in sports or business or your profession it's best to hide it or pretend your not as people don't seem to be good at dealing with the success of others.

It's weird isn't it. People come for you if you're good at what you do. I don't mind it - it's a great incentive to keep innovating and growing.

Can say that's why we love the hard-work feel good story. Michael Barlow, Ryan Crowley get a lot of respect and love around AFL.
Can't imagine how Australia would fare if Conor McGregor was Aussie. The arrogance and mouth that lad has would turn people off big time. But he has been brilliant in UFC and no one can come close to him. He's hard working and promotes the sport- much like Fyfe does. Another one would be Cristiano Ronaldo. He's a freak and hugely fit- but just like Conor- has arrogance about him.
That's why Kyrgios playing tennis doesn't get a lot of love. He's obviously hugely talented and among the best in the world, growing just like Fyfe. But he's the anti Aussie battler, hence the hate. It's good for an Aussie to do well in sport, but to be so good is another issue altogether

Your equating Fyfe with Kyrgios? Kyrgios has been suspended from his game for non-trying, abuses umpires and sledges opponents and their girlfriends. He is not hated because he is an "anti Aussie battler". The arrogance is only a small part of people's frustration with him.
About the only thing Fyfe and Kyrgios have in common is that they are very talented. That's it.

Kyrgios isn't just arrogant.

He's an abusive ****head prone to throwing games and giving uo whenn the game doesn't roll his way.

In short, he's a talented campaigner

I like Kyrgios. He's majestic to watch when he's on and in full flight. So what if he acts like a tool. He's smart enough and existentially aware enough to realise that pro tennis is just a big side show and at times he has difficulty taking that seriously.

He doesn't find a lot of meaning in being paid huge money to hit tennis balls for the entertainment of a crowd and cares so little for what people think of him he's prepared to say it out loud and act like an arrogant young prick at times. I can't hate him for that.
Most of Australia of course prefers the Hewitt type who acts like they are fighting world war 1 again when they are playing a game.

Fyfe has got the perfect balance for a sportsman. The cut throat obsessive will to win that means he gives absolutely everything he has on the field combined with the smarts to be a product off the field. And why not? He's young, fit, gorgeous, talented, intelligent and charismatic. Why pretend to be anything else?

Yep it's very strange. I don't think we should make celebrities out of high achievers as the US does but do think we should at least respect them and even use them for positive motivation.

One third of that post gets a lot of likes!!

Even if I don't always agree with the message, I like the way you always see the best in people/situations/pretty much everything. It's heartening. Don't go changin'

I'm a counsellor, its what I do :) A little understanding goes a long way in most things. People are mostly all the same at heart. If you can figure out why they are behaving the way they are it makes them a lot more likeable. Thanks for your nice words.

The only reason professional sports people get paid the kinds of money they do is because people watch them. If we weren't watching there would be no money and they wouldn't make a living out of playing that sport. Therefore I (like any watcher) am entitled to demand standards from those sports people. They are role models for young people and quite simply if they don't want to be then they should take up amateur sport instead - they can't have it both ways.

If I was responsible for Tennis Australia atm I'd be kicking Krygios and Tomic to the kerb. If they don't think they are impacting parents choosing for their kids not to follow tennis they are kidding themselves. The sport will suffer in the long run - it already is imo. I know a bunch of formerly tennis fanatics who now refuse to watch because of these guys.

Fair enough. I'm not saying its right or good, just understandable at least from where I sit. And I kind of admire the sort of awareness he has for his age. Sure he could get out but can you imagine how many people are in his ear telling him he would be insane not to keep at it? If he doesn't really like playing or see the sense in it he's caught between a rock and a hard place because so much has been invested in him and he would be under huge pressure not to quit.
Again, not saying its right, just that I have some sympathy and for some reason I like the kid. I certainly get what you are saying.

Imagine if you defined yourself as something, by you hate it, to turn away from that "something" would be like giving up yourself and you become nothing, a nobody. What place would you have in the world?

So you stay working that job.

Not thrilled with Bartel's announcements, CBA may not be completed until Xmas next year, it is the reason Fyfe is hanging out - wanting to know how much he can charge for his services.

This is going to be a long year.

I can handle acting like a prick. Where I draw the line is throwing matches.

Why does he have to wait though to sign a deal? If the cap is 10m today, he might ask for 1m a season for example. If the cap goes up to 12m, then his contract becomes 1.2m based on the percentage that is written in to come into effect after the CBA.

and if the cap goes to 11mil he only gets 1.1m when he could have gotten more elsewhere or the cap goes to 15 mil and he gets 1.5mil which is more then expected.

I reckon the minor details of the money don't really matter to him anyway, will have a big deal with Adidas all the way through his career anyway and will waltz into the media or coaching if he wants due to being an all time great by the end of his career.

It will be the third party deal rules that will impact him the most.

Can FFC release him to provide extra commentary on other shows, speak at sponsorship functions? Will any arrangements like that need to be considered part of the total player payments for the club?

Will branding unavoidably linked to FFC be treated as club arranged third party deals?

Who has the rights to the image of Fyfe while he represents FFC at official events and are there salary cap implications should FFC be required to pay royalties via a sponsor for him to appear wearing FFC colours at their event?

Yeah, not that simple.

ASA's, bonus clauses - Fyfe's management has been shy since he was stiffed at the doig count years ago.
