If we loose fyfe so be it. The individual doesn't make the team. It's the whole 22 that play their heart out each week. A great team isn't determined by one player if we loose him and we show that it hasn't made a big impact on the club going forward then it shows what sort of team we are.
no disrespect, but we're not Hawthorn or Geelong. We are a premiership away from being a club with a premiership. We had an atrocious start to the comp and have only since Lyon, managed to get to a grand final. Fyfe's the best player in the comp when not injured. Look at the difference the second best player had when going to Geelong, a club on the way down the ladder. We lose Fyfe, not only do we continue to struggle against good teams, we would have to play against a good team WITH Fyfe in it to win a grand final. That would look like a very sad next 6 or so years seeing us continue to struggle and a Fyfe team dominate. Not that I think he is leaving but I can appreciate what the situation would look like if he did.

Hawthorn and geelong are teams that have been around a lot longer than Fremantle exactly. Geelong did get a good player in dangerfield but did it effect Adelaide that much? They still finished top 4 after finishing 5th in 2015 so they improved without their best player in 2016. Team game not a one man game

sure. but adelaide was on the improve and that effort by adelaide last year with their super forward line + the dominating effect of what Danger showed last year (for geelong), in Adelaides midfield= well who knows but i think they would have gone further

So with adding McCarthy, bennell in 2017 we don't have a super forward line ? There is no knowing of what Fremantle could be yet will be. We can only be on the improve after 2016 fyfe or no fyfe 2016 wouldn't of been any different. We had a horrid run with injuries and it wasn't just one man it was more than a hand full. If we lost fyfe we would still be consolidated and who knows what the future will hold. We can't predict that by the loss of one player. If we lost a number of players it could be a whole different story. But solid teams cover the loss. Look at hawks and the amount of players they have lost .franklin for an example did they fall from grace after that ? No they had a solid group of players and they didn't look back. Geelong have a great midfield even without dangerfield. If we couldn't cover him that would make us not a solid teAm and rebuilding the team as a whole can only better the team in the long run. It's not like we won't lose other players down the track but if we have a solid playing group and have good young guys developing then there is no issue

Zero chance we will lose Fyfe. A person driven by team success does not leave his home state for the sake of improving his own brand. Worse case scenario is that to have enough money to keep Fyfe is that two or three of Mundy, Johno, Sandy, Bala and Igbo are not offered contracts at the end of the year to free salary space. I can't see that happening either, but there is still no chance we wouldn't be able to put a contract on the table to keep Fyfe. He is also exceptionally popular with the vast majority of the squad. Look at his social media pages where he is always hanging out with Freo players. The talk of players not liking him is total utter rubbish.

I don't think he will go either. Just looking at the hypothetical scenario

"So with adding McCarthy, bennell in 2017 we don't have a super forward line ?" Comparing a forward line that was the best of 2016 with one of the worst performing (that also just lost the highest goal kicker) by adding two guys that didn't even make the field last year? I suppose you could ask the Adelaide board whether they agree with you? Possibly?

"But solid teams cover the loss." Sure. But I wouldn't consider we have what could be defined as a solid team at this time (especially a Fyfe-less solid team). We have a young team with potential. But that is largely it at this point in time.

"Look at hawks and the amount of players they have lost .franklin for an example did they fall from grace after that ? No they had a solid group of players and they didn't look back." Yes. They could be considered the 'solidest' team of the past few decades. Probably not the best team to compare us with.

"Geelong have a great midfield even without dangerfield." Decent, but 'great' is a big call (unless you have a few levels above great). They have Selwood. They came 10th in 2015 and were clearly on the way down with age taking over their 3-peat stars before Dangerfield joined.

Fyfe is the sort of player than turns an average team destined to finish bottom ten into a top eight side, a middling side into top four.

The game is at it's essence just a bunch of contests all over the ground and he doesn't lose most of them - which is massive.

I think he has less impact in a tippy top side because he isn't required to win as much of his own ball in the scrum, it gets retained and kicked cleaner to team mates instead.

Fyfe is our most important defender. As long as he wins the ball in the bounce we can set up across the wing instead of worrying about a deep inside fifty against.

A Hill/Hill/Fyfe combo could turn what I would call a defensive clearance, where the ball is won by our side and kicked long forward with no real direction, into a far more dangerous McCarthy goal.

I want to see Stephen Hill front running at the bounce, Fyfe wrestling the ball out to him and then laserboot passes. I think that might have been the plan for Suban but he can't create that gap of space with a burst of speed.

Long story short, Fyfe leaving would be a huge loss, irreplaceable, no matter how good our team is and he could make a worse side better than us.

On the positive side, Bennell is another player who can impact games as much.

If we lost Fyfe and likely Sandi, Mundy, MJ and others we will have a massive stint at the bottom of the ladder and a quick re-build is dead. Fyfe is the key and even though a couple first rounders would be nice they won't be winning games for us in the short term. If we lose Fyfe then might as well move on Walters and SHill and go full re-build because they won't be around for our next tilt. That said I'm hopeful that Blakely, Tucker, Weller, Langdon, McCarthy and Tabs will all step up this year and add a Jack Martin and I'm quietly excited about our future if Fyfe signs.

Fingers crossed Fyfe gets the captaincy. Can't see him not re-signing with us if he gets it. With all the extra media work and responsibility he'll be bleeding too much purple to leave, he ain't no homesick affectless Chris Judd.

Long story short. Worse case scenario we loose a couple of veterans a year early. None, zero, not even 0.001% chance we will loose Fyfe.

No offense to anyone in particular, but **** there are some negative sentiments in this thread.

Firstly, I do not believe Fyfe will leave. Secondly, if he does leave, the sky will not crumble and fall.

Do we even need this thread any more or has it run its course?

C'mon Dudley you know we'll only go round in circles somewhere else if we close this thread. :D

How do you pronounce it? I want to look like a dork trying to ask him a question and making a mess of it all.

Dew-man, doo-man, doom-an?
You'll hear all of the iterations above from the commentators until a journo finally asks how it's pronounced. My guess is doo-man as in Danny the Doorman

I agree, 2017 is very similar to 2002. In 2001 we were a basket case then in 2002 we turned a corner and Pav stayed.

IF we finish bottom 6 and IF Fyfe leaves it sets the club back years IMO. Not only in a playing sense, but in the mindset of the club. If we struggle this year and Fyfe leaves we go into full re-build mode and Neale should captain the club in 2018. Does Ross persevere through that? All of a sudden we're re-building under a new coach and our window is 5 years away. But for what it's worth I think we'll play finals and Fyfe will stay.

Sorry for the intrusion. Wont stay long. If we take him at his word his next contract will be with a team in its premiership window. To be fair to Freo you have gone hard to trade your way to give him that with you. Also, many posters around believe that you guys tanked hard last season (me not included).

There would never be a better time to judge Freo than in end of this season. If you finish this season like a contender then you should have no problems in keeping Fyfe. When I say contender I mean WCE and above not NM and below as per 2016.

But if you finish where 99% of the ladder predictions I have seen have you (which is usually mid table) then he should leave if he is good to his word.

So my question to you guys is do you genuinely believe you are good enough to contend this year and therefore keep Fyfe to his word. Also should I pick him in my fantasy team - he is not exactly cheap but he is discounted.

You guys...

"But if I see a strong future at Fremantle then that's where I will be playing my footy."

Somehow the quote above equals needing to contend in 2017??? Ross is contracted til 2020. He'll want to see a list developing capable of contending by then. Whether that's 2017 or 2020 - who knows. Ild say he's pretty happy with our recent trade period and the development of our 2nd and 3rd year players - who were influential in winning the WAFL grand final. The slide from 2015 to 2016 was unpredictable, and so is our 2017 season. If Fyfe, Sandi, MJ, Bennell play a lot of footy and B.Hill, McCarthy, Hamling and even Kersten bring something to the table, that's already 8 inclusions that were not around for most of last year. No reason we couldnt push for the 8 this year - whether this is just preseason optimism remains to be seen. Bring on the footy!

And lock him in for fantasy team. His fitness, speed and strength seem to have gone up a notch this year. His first couple of games could be quiet - given almost a year off, but it'll be a gamble not to have him from the start.
