For what its worth on footy classified tonight Hutchie puts in at the last minute that he believes the reporter is on the money with Fyfe to St Kilda.

Well that's a relief. I don't think Hutchie has ever got a single thing right about Freo.

I'll eat my hat if Fyfe doesn't sign with fremantle and post it online. Dunno how this got so much traction.

Money? He earns 800k a year and I would imagine 1.1 mil would be a ball park figure for starters. Perth is cheaper than Melbourne and a heck of a lot closer to lake grace.

Saints don't make me laugh if he did leave it would be to a bigger team.

Anyways rant over carry on

I don't get why he wanted the captaincy so badly if he's hitting the road

Makes him look like a peanut, although as everyone has been saying for a few years now - he possibly is

It's the Players' CBA negotiation that is likely the main hold up to a firm commitment.

He's obviously tested the market, and that's his prerogative. However, I cannot imagine how a man who intended to leave in a year would actively campaign for the captainship among his teammates. Sure, it's a stroke for the ego, but the blow to his brand is more damaging if he swapped clubs under those circumstances because of how destabilising his move would be. Better to have just lain low, stayed in the leadership group, and let Mundy keep the captaincy through another rebuild year.

If he leaves, he leaves, but I hope we force the Saints to give us good value. I still get really confused by RFA - if we match, does it mean they have to trade? If they don't trade, and Nathan still wants to go, does he have to go to the draft to get to his club of choice? And if Nathan goes through the draft, will the AFL then give us the appropriate compensation pick?

yes they have to trade OR he has to go through the draft, I think with that salary on his head. No we don't get the AFL compo.

Where are you getting your flawed information from? Might be a good find quotes directly rather than the BS you are assuming was said...

Stride (Fyfe's management) said:

"Stride Sports Management can 100 per cent deny the rumour circulating today that Nat Fyfe has formally or informally agreed to a contract to play with the St Kilda Football Club next year and beyond," the statement said.

"Furthermore, we can confirm that Nat Fyfe remains focused on the start of the season with the Fremantle Football Club and remains committed to the Fremantle Football Club in 2017.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage the football public to check the credibility of their news and the person behind it."

And Richardson (Saints coach) said:

"I knew it was wrong. In all reality, (I) don't want to give it much oxygen because it was so far off the mark," Richardson told Fox Footy.

"(It's) pretty disappointing really that there was an accusation that a board member had spoken to someone and so that's the disappointing part.

"The rest of it is just laughable given that we know where it all sits."

Anyone who knows anything about how players are acquired from other clubs, how the offer is made and how free agency works would know it's bullshit

1) president aside the board wouldn't be aware of the offer. They only become aware of the offer when the contract is ratified i.e. closer to the free agency window
2) fyfe deal can't be done now it would breach the AFL rules. Only an offer can be made now

Plus the idea that a board member residing in either melbourne or nz is talking to fitzy about this stuff is laughable. It's border line defamatory as it implies they're unprofessional.

The only situation that I can see that is remotely possible is that fitzy had a discussion with am EX board member who was playing off a rumour he heard with mayo on it. That ex board member wouldn't know shit about what's happening internally

Saints tried to shaft Essendon and get Carlilse on the cheap but Dodoro wanted pick 5 and didn't budge until he got it. Freo needs to do the same and demand the Saints 2 first round picks in return.
The saints would happily pay that

But it's a moot point. Fyfe isn't going anywhere and it's laughable to suggest he will.

Fyfe's currency has weakened a bit. He is clearly struggling with form following 2 broken legs and almost a year out of the game. He also had a restricted pre-season. He's also copping a lot of attention on the field as we know and is finishing the games in pain, even though three times now he has almost single-handedly dragged his side across the line for a win.

Ross has said in numerous interviews that "Nathan is clearly below his best form, but he's working hard to get back there."

So I don't think he would command the same amount of money following his outstanding Brownlow year.

Yep exactly and the fact Fyfe's management set a timeline ages ago that everyone seems to conveniently ignore as being deceptive or some other rubbish. It'll get sorted around our bye one way or the other. No doubt a number of clubs are keen to make offers but Fyfe and his management have said all along they won't be fielding those until they have a discussion with Freo first. Unfortunately that isn't very exciting to report on for the media though so it's understandable they need to speculate and make **** up.

Lachie Neale was not a free agent.
Your comment was about the relationship between holding off signing and being 100% committed. Free agent or out of contract is irrelevant to that.

Fact is, Lachie was 100% committed but had a timeline in place for dealing with the contract.

At what point/what is the timeline for an out of contract player and his management telling interested parties that he won't be taking on their offer?

For smaller deals I could see it being anywhere up until the thick of trade week but for big deals surely it comes to a head well before the end of the season

restricted free agent. There really isn't much difference between that and any players coming out of contract apart from the AFL compo is there?

Well yes. Clubs will go after free agents much harder because if their offer isn't matched, they get them for free. It's a significant difference to having to trade for them. Clubs with room in their salary cap are willing to offer over and above what a player is worth through free agency because it's a no-risk proposition. See Chris Mayne.

St Kilda don't have to trade for him if we match the offer. They might not bother. It costs them nothing at all to make the offer though. So all Free Agents (even the shit ones) would be fielding offers from clubs with nothing to lose. That's a very different scenario than someone like Neale who they would have had to trade for as well as satisfying his contract demands.

When you say matching the offer you mean prior to him invoking his free agency rights? I.e. part of the negotiation process that happens prior to him accepting an offer?

Finally, an opposition supporter with some sense.. I saw a post from a saints supporter that said hawks first pick and acres for Fyfe and a future second, I don't think I have ever cringed more then what I did after I saw that comment.
