The media are a fantastic bunch aren't they?

From the end of 2015 until now the club and Nat Fyfe (and his management) have kept a consistent, low key message. He has said that he will explore his options but that he see's himself as a Fremantle player moving forward.

I love that our club does not perform trading / contract discussions via the media and keep it all in house.

Now that it is crystal clear to the media that he is only dealing with Fremantle and will re-sign shortly they are going with the angle that clubs are not offering him what they were due to this year's less than Brownlow winning form. The line from St Kilda that they have withdrawn is in my eyes nothing more than them trying to save face after being spurned by him.

I'm sure it is great for their fans to try and control the narrative a bit but every single club in the AFL would benefit from him.

Anyone who says he is not worth $1,200,000 per year as a MINIMUM is kidding themseves. That works out to be (roughly) 9.6 percent of the 2018 salary cap and just 8.8 percent of the 2022. Considering he is making $1,000,000 per year at the moment at roughly 11.5 percent of the cap the numbers work well.

Fyfe was never leaving, why would he when the club has created a great environment to foster the next generation of players with a stable leadership, coach and more importantly a developing list that will see us challenge again by 2020.

His last contract was 2.5 million over 3 years (Back ended). His form has not improved a lot since then.
A 20% increase on that is pretty close to a million a year. I don't want to pay any more, 9.6% is a lot of the salary cap, if we save 200k that could allow us to target 1 more player.

Agree that the media are a classy bunch but...
it's beyond me how all of what you've just outlined has not been accepted as blindingly obvious from the outset Yeti.
Can't exaggerate the long term commitment and respect/love he has for the club.
It sticks out like mutts' nuts.

I think alot of it comes back to the underlying problem of the media's place within society. They are no longer here to bring news and analysis to us, they are now used to boost revenue streams of their place of employment.

It is now no longer accepted to be right but you have to be "firstest with the mostest". While thay may have been a military quote (credit for who can source it ) I feel like the media is nothing more than a source generating vehicle for global conglomerates.

We NEED the media to ask the questions our clubs / players don't want to have asked but they want to be seen as a vital part of what we do.

Unfortunately because of players associations (which should NOT be looked at in the same way as labour unions) our sports organisations are forced to whore themselves out to the highest bidder.

And so, the cycle continues with more and more people in the media required to provide content to feed the beast to continue engagement and drive revenue.

Fyfe never wavered from his original statements (like Lachie Neale) and that seemed to give the media the all clear to make up histrionic style head lines to make them seem relevant.

When the only people more irrelevant during the Fyfe contract saga than the media has been the other 17 clubs.

Players like Fyfe / Martin / Kelly are always going to get paid what is required. They are smart enough to know that if they eat half the pie they will be unable to perform.

Buddy and Sydney are proof of that.

I don't get too caught up in the idea that the salary cap going up by x% means everyone gets x% more. That money shifts more to those already on more.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that our salary cap looks like this:
4 guys over $600,000 - $2.4m
10 guys between 350k and 599k - $2.5m
30 guys between $80k and $300 - $5m

Median about $200,000 and I don't expect that to change much.

So for the last 3 years he has earned 8.3% of the cap. His form may not have improved but it has hard to improve on that 2014 year when he has spent 2 years out injured. He is our club captain and deserving of a pay rise, especially considering the 20% increase in the cap and how young our list is. Who other than Fyfe will be eating the cap?

Neale, Hill x2, McCarthy, Bennell, Walters will all be eating up chunks of the pie. We need to bank some cash to splash out on 1 or 2 players at the end of 2018 or 2019 to chase a flag.

Ideally we should be front loading our contracts and sitting on or close to 95% of the salary cap to allow us to spend big on players when we hit our premiership window. Coniglio and Lobb are both out of contract at the end of 2019, if we could sit on 95% for 2 years we could probably afford both of them.

4 guys over $600,000 - $2.4m - This would probably end up closer to 3 to 3.5 million. Especially if pay someone 1.2 million.

4 guys over $600,000 - $3.5
8 guys between 350k and 599k - $2.0m
32 guys between $80k and $300 - $4.5 million.

This also shows how someone earning $300,000 could be a restricted free agent at a club.

Without anyone knowing exact figures it is hard to pinpoint exactly what the clubs list management strategy is.

I wouldn't want us to bank a whole heap of money for FA or RFA who may or may not come. Identify, developand foster our talent.

For Fremantle being in Perth is too hard to attract players on dollars alone.

This also shows how someone earning $300,000 could be a restricted free agent at a club.
And how many people are earning under the average salary and how making them Free agents (As one of the proposed changes as part of the new deal) would change the landscape massively.

Sounds a bit wellingtonish to me

I actually think it's a mixture of Fyfe wanting to stay and clubs not offering him as much as he wants. We're all entitled to our opinions off course and my opinion is Fyfe isn't worth 1.2m right now. If he plays like this next year, that's a lot of money we just spent.

Exactly.

The majority of players (those above minimum wage but below star status) won't get a uniform 20% increase.

The AFLPA has increased the minimum payments by more than 20% to ensure the lowest paid players get their share.

The stars can ask for more than 20% and if their clubs agree, then the guys in the middle will get squeezed. Not a good outcome for them as the increases over the remaining 5 years of the deal are tiny (1.2-2%pa).

Just one thing though, you might want to check your maths...10 guys between 350k and 599k - $2.5m.
10 players in that pay scale = $3.5-$5.99milion.

Fyfe has signed
May as well have.
Was never going anywhere, except in that unique fantasy land generated by media and St Kilda dreamtime.
Footnote:The way D.Russell was talking to Ross before the St Kilda game Fyfe is gonna sign a bloody 10 year deal.

Going to throw it out there, Gossage said tonight on Channel 10 news that there is a player press conference called for tomorrow morning. Initial thought was Sean Darcy's rising star nomination but that has gone to Blake Hardwick.

Has the day arrived where Fyfe has announced he has re-signed???

That'd be nice! But it could also be our usual mid-week press conference.

Darcy got absolutely shafted on the RS nom.

A player fronts the media every Tuesday morning. Nothing different.

Nothing to say your intuition isn't correct Wally.
An announcement ain't far away.
Sounds as though it's gonna be a long extension too.
Jeez the bloke is cracking in with some kamikaze efforts around the ground.
There was one right on the boundary line against St Kilda where his incredibly desperate repeat effort stopped 3 St Kilda players in their tracks.
Trending superhuman.
The Eastern States clubs are softening their stance to the point that they gave up months ago.
If their efforts were ever more than the ol' due diligence cliché.

I've been saving this one up for a special occasion..

Yeti, you see things so clearly and analyse for those of us (eg me) who can't quite articulate what is going on. Thank you [emoji5]
