Gaff the inside mid Vs Gaff the outside mid

If the goal was to replace Priddis at the coal face it's working as Gaff's disposal is as good at the moment...

We know.

It is scary how Gaff kick blind hack kicks across his body straight to the opposition is so Priddis like. Priddis did address this later in his career and handballed more.

Don't get beaten by what you know!!!

Simo??

Playing blokes out of position contributes to the problem.

Playing blokes in their natural positions where they kick arse helps fix the problem.

No one player is the problem sure. But fixing Gaff and Sheed will help stopping the turnovers and poor disposal efficiency both inside and outside.

Its like domino's.
If that is actually the problem, or just a perceived problem..there were lots of other teamsters playing in their natural positions in the last two games, yet I didnt' see them 'kicking arse' ? In fact the whole team didn't 'kick arse'? Surely can't all be Gaff's fault. Sure it's like dominos and Gaff falls out the end as collateral damage not the cause. It's perceived that he's playing inside because of the way the opp are playing Sheed, Yeo and Shuey. You should read Mr. Dylan's thread, not saying he's the new messiah, but he's at least very clear and rational in his breakdown of the team's current woes. No kneejerk reactions. Just saying. Also the team has been very underdone as a whole in their preparation for this season, might be coming good soon.

Gaff isnt colateral damage he is playing out of position.

The domino's reference was about turnovers versus efficiency.

If we are playing people out of position like Sheed and Gaff their efficiency and production drops. If that domino falls over then we are chasing tail and defending. If the domino falls the other way we have the ball and we play proactively.....everyone is more effective.

As for knee jerk reactions playing people in the positions they suit and are best at is basic logic. Not knee jerk anything. Sheed was playing as an elite insside mid. Gaff is an elite winger. That has been proven, nothing knee jerk about that is there?

You don't understand my post, you're not listening. I understand fully what you said- and what everyone else has said on the same topic. Going around and round. Anyway, we all have our opinions and our perceived problems with the team/game. Doesn't mean any of it is true of course, including my own. The truth is somewhere between the footy field on game-day and behind the closed doors of the coaches offices.

Gaff is being played on the inside more than he should be.

I think the coaches were thinking he'd play like he did last year - when he did play more inside and was arguably our best mid for most of the year before suspension. Gaff really took his game to the next level.

Sheed is a natural inside mid. Play him there. Keep Gaff outside.

Gaff is in horrible form, as is Yeo.

Shuey has been serviceable as had Redden.

Collective needs to improve.

He can’t play inside because he is absolutely rubbish under pressure. He can’t create any space in tight and is a horrible decision maker under the slightest bit of heat. His gift is his endurance and reliability as an outside link player and should be sitting off each contest as a receiver.

Weak over the ball, so he loses balance and his disposal suffers. Putting Gaff into contests at the expense of his outside class is like tagging your own player and make them inefficient.

It’s why you tag Sidebottom. His class on the outside but a below average contested player.

Sheed -> Inside
Gaff -> Outside
Masten -> GTFO

Ok a bit harsh on Masten, but for team balance it's the right move for mine

You can play both Masten and Gaff. The problem is the reimagining of Gaff after his suspension.

Gaff back to a wing but also a rotation inside here and there.
Redden to play 50/50 inside and outside (note thats where he played in the finals and was huge)
Sheed back to playing predominantly inside.

Get Yeo to play in the coal face and feed the rest of our mids.

Masten out unfortunately and we should look to run cripps/Petch/duggan through a wing more often as well.

I’d look to get Yeo free wider of stoppages and optimise his ability to break lines and tackles.

In the aftermath of Masten's injury I reckon its telling that both Gaff and Sheed have both found their best form of the year. I honestly dont know why it took an injury to make the structural change the team was crying out for? Gaff in that defensive winger role that Masten used to fill is perfect for Gaff. Racking up 17km to provide an outlet, big possession stats along with a bit more time to use it well.. he is also as tough as nails and courageous. 100% upgrade.

Sheed playing a bit more inside and forward of centre is also perfect. Those raking left foot entries into our 50 or even better, when he gets the footy anywhere inside the 50... deadly. He is very good in tight and is a great user of the footy. Along with Rioli adding bite up forward this has been a key part of why we have been playing better.

Gaff needs a few metres of space to settle onto his right, he can win the ball in tight but rarely uses it well aside from the regulation release handball. Few rounds ago he was the first receiver off the back of the stoppage, without the time or momentum to find a target. Now he's providing options at pace around the contest, on the wings, and dropping back to fill a hole in defense.

Not sure why we thought he was Dusty for a few weeks. Perhaps fast-tracking his match fitness.

Sheed and Redden have both spent more time on ball as a result of these changes, and their numbers are flourishing.

You are not counting Hutchings into the equation.
He has been mainly used in the Masten role mostly with disastrous results.
Hutchings IMHO is the elephant in the room.

Agree lately, I feel like Hutch should only be used when we're coming up a team with a mid in red hot form who needs tagging, otherwise I feel like we have better options instead, which would lead to even further improvement in the middle.

Thats the issue with Hutch. Elite tagger but pretty average outside of that. That said playing him in games that we need him would actually be detremental to his game/form. We actually need to look into a player that can offer something offensively and defensively.

It's a good way to fast track Venables IMHO. Get him to follow and learn off the best mids in the comp. He's already playing as a defensive forward and does that quite well.

Not a tagger but Cripps spent years as a defensive forward but now looks elite around goals.

my thought too.

Probably played his best game as an inside mid a long time.

He won like 4 centre clearances in a row in that third qt when we went ape shit.

That said, boots had 30 possies but only 8 contested. Which i find to be a bit strange.
Maybe Shuey is sore or carrying a niggle.

Man thats good flexibility to have in our side.
