The man is an absolute star, puts his heart and soul into his football and the club.

2 premierships, brownlow, players and coaches mvp

The last few years would not have been the same without him.

I am making this thread because I would like to celebrate the player and I (much like bomber apparently) am sick to death of hearing the endless debate about Gary and the GC. Please keep all GC related chatter to other 300 or so threads.

Instead, this thread is to celebrate GAJ the football player.

Don't worry about the trolls, corio.

Spot on with the post. Who would have thought the kid who debuted under lights at the 'G in 2002, the kid who 'is average and only gets a game because of his name', would become the man and player that he has become. Wonderful, wonderful player of the Geelong Footy Club and, like his old man, has brought us so many great moments.

I know you were trying to keep this thread positive SJ, but without the negative posts corio bay just looks like he's talking to himself and therefore INSANE.

Gaz has a follicle issue....:p (a bit like me!)

Good stuff corio bay.
I prefer to appreciate the heart stopping moments that we have been gifted.
Pure class and one of the greatest to pull on the mighty Cats jumper!

The Abletts are one thing Hawks must surely feel sore over, makes it even sweeter!

Good luck Jnr with the rest of the year. I will be following every touch you get.

Champion full stop :thumbsu:

Up there with Polly, Gaz SNR, Goggin, Nankervis, Buddah, Davis etc.

This is a better thread than the other shit. :thumbsu:

Gaz is the ultimate player. I couldn't imagine him playing for another club, and I can't see him actually leaving. I'm sick of the negative shit. Just leave it be... Anyway, that's too much for this thread. I'll definitely be loving the rest of his 2010, helping us win back to back premierships, and looking like back to back brownlows. :) Go Gazza!

That's what LifeSpan-Void is saying, how about delete the other posts by corio bay so it doesn't look like they're talking to themselves?

Homestly, as long as we win the lot again this year, I don't care where he goes next year.

It's been a pleasure to watch him develop into a champion, would be nice to see it continue, but if not, i've still enjoyed myself :)

Excellent thread Corio. :thumbsu:

He has made watching the mighty cats that little bit more special. And even though i would be absolutely shattered if he does leave next year, he should be appreciated & respected for what he helped us achieve over the last 3-4 seasons.

Ah righto, I didn't do the initial deletions but I'll fix her up.

The man is a legend.

I thought he wasnt reaching his potential and he could improve but woah.... He has suprised us all, and he continues too. I have never known such dominance over multiple years. Probably deserves 3 Brownlows once this year is over.

Up there with Polly, Gaz SNR, Goggin, Nankervis, Buddah, Davis etc.
When my son read this post, he asked me of my memories and opinions of the named Geelong legends, and then of course my idea of where Junior fits in.

I did need to do a little research to help with the stats, but most of the following summary was formed from my views and memories of those favourite sons of the Geelong Football Club.

All were named in the GFC Team of the Century bar Ian Nankervis, who was named as an emergency.

Bob Davis played 189 games from 1948 to 1958.
A dual Premiership player and 1963 Premiership Coach.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1957
I am not quite old enough to remember Bobby playing, but his reputation says he was highly skilled player who played with flair and electrifying pace. When I asked my old man whether Bobby was tough, he replied " I don't recall anyone ever catching him so we could find out."

Graham (Polly) Farmer played 101 games from 1962 to 1967.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1963 and 1964.
I find it quite amazing that he carved a name for himself as a Legend of the game in only 101 appearances in the hoops.
An indigenous player, Polly had one leg shorter than the other (I think from having polio as a child).
He captained the Cats in 57 games.
He is rightfully credited with making handball into an art form and I recall him in public exhibitions of handballing through the window of a moving car as his "party trick".
A great mark and beautiful left foot kick, it was in the rucking duties that he was a true maestro. He would often grab the ball out of the ruck and handball 30-40 metres to a team mate.
When Sam Newman can string a few sensible words together, he will tell you that Farmer was the greatest ruckman to ever play the game. I tend to agree.

Billy Goggin played 248 games from 1958 to 1971.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1967 and 1970.
When I was a youngster most kids around Geelong that were lucky enough to own a Cats footy jumper wore No.35 on their back. Billy was a star rover renowned for his courage, consistency and explosive pace. His trademark "stab pass" whilst streaming out of the centre and hitting Dougie Wade on the chest was unstoppable. More often than not he had Polly to thank for the delivery and they were thought to have an uncanny ability to read each others thoughts.
Bill was a champion in his own right though and he went on to coach the club from 1980-82. He captained and also coached his state.

Ian Nankervis played 325 games from 1967 to 1983.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1972,76 and 77.
Started his career as an understudy to Goggin in the days where the resting rover played out of a forward pocket and he got to kick 203 career goals because Goggin didn't like to rest too often.
Later in his career, he was shifted to a permanent back pocket where he became a forerunner of today's running defenders that start attacking forays from defence.
He captained the side in 110 games. I recall him as being an elusive and highly skilled ball-magnet. Reliable as they come, he was a great servant of the Club, although I personally don't rate him quite as highly as the other players in this article.

Garry Ablett played 242 games from 1984 to 1996.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1984
Just a footballing freak.
If you are that young that you didn't see him, go and get the DVD's.
He is the only footballer in my lifetime that you could truthfully say thousands went to the footy JUST to see him play.
Although it was probably his one and only famous line, Sandy Roberts said it best with "What more can I say?".

Garry Hocking played 274 games from 1987 to 2001.
GFC Best and Fairest in 1991,93,94 and 96.
I rate him as the most courageous player I have ever seen play the game.
From his first game for the club, his attack on the ball was breathtaking.
Fantastic skills by hand and foot and a magnificent leader by example of his deeds.
Finished in top three for the Brownlow Medal count between 1991-5.

And so to Junior.
I know it is fashionable to wait for a footballer to finish his career before making assertions as to their greatness.
I don't see the need in the case of young Gaz.
If he were to retire tomorrow he would already have done enough to stamp himself as the greatest footballer I have ever seen.
What can't he do?
He wont retire tomorrow, so Lord knows just what he will achieve by the end of his career and I feel privileged to have watched it to date.
I know this will offend many football "purists", but remember that this is just the honest opinion of one lifetime Cat fanatic.

Fully agree with this. The sadness of losing a player like him would be sated by the knowledge that we'd be a 3-time Premier and at the start of his career any thoughts that we'd be saying that would have seemed absolutely fanciful. A true champion of the Geelong Cats and to put his career into context, he'd be on approximately the same number of games as Bob Davis or Ted Rankin by season's end.

Someone posted on another thread that Gazza has already played about 70% of his father's tally of games, if he could continue in the hoops he could reach 300+ as an L.Matthews style forward. Maybe even like his old man!!

And Hoody, couldn't have expressed it better either. We should all take a step back to marvel at what we've been given from this champion, and enjoy what more he can do for 2010. :thumbsu:

Totally agree. In my 48 years of following Geelong, Gary jnr. is #1. Ahead of dad, Goggin, Farmer, Sam, Buddha. Simply the best, and I'm so glad it looks as if there's a concerted effort to NOT take him for granted.

Sooner than later, he may well be regarded as THE GREATEST EVER, and I for one hope he's still in the Geelong hoops.

Wow....thats really saying something!

Behind Ablett snr for mine....never seen a player like him....mecurial! Ranks #1 for me on pure ability and excitement.

Also...though the years have gone by...and I was only a kid...Polly holds a special place for me...he changed the game.

but GAJ is one very good player.

This is an inspired thread, and it's already generated some outstanding posts. I think that footy enthusiasts too often fall in to the trap of stressing about what may come that they lose sight of the here and now.

And right here, right now, #29 is an absolute star, and pretty much worth the price of admission on his own. The first time I got to see him play was in the classic one point win over Hawthorn last year, and my wife & I were both stunned that every time he went near the ball, even the Hawks' fans were holding their collective breath.

Then we saw him come up here later that season & single handedly destroy both Sydney & Tim Watson's commentating credibility in a display of courage & committment that defied description.

Don't know if he'll go, and don't care - but I'm glad to have at least had the opportunity to stand tall wearing my navy & white in a sea of red, belting out the club song largely because of him.

In the last few months there have been little positive articles about Gary. They have mostly been about him and Gold Coast or him and Thompson's so called disagreement. This is an article which shows how much we as Geelong fans should be appreciative towards Gary (even though MOST are)and if he does leave have no ill feelings or hatred towards the man.

Respect for Gazza....

Is it just me or is anyone else here losing respect for Gary Ablett Jr.?

I think several months is enough time to decide whether or not one loves the club or the money, and that time has passed. If he loves the money more, do I want to see him in our team? Nope. Not even in the twos.

I don't know....lately when I watch us play, and he gets the ball, I've noticed a general lack of barracking from my part, even though he's brilliant.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Respect for Gazza....

Did you really think this was worthy of a whole new thread? You couldn't of posted this in one of the other 400 ???
