Last night we proved that if we play a running game we can be effective.
HOWEVER, one thing does concern me still. When teams flood we sort of get stuck, we need to develop a game plan to combat that.

ALso, when our forwars drop marks, we need crumbers to consistently swoop on the ball. Djekurra, Varcoe, S Johnson can be those sort of players. We just need a game plan where for example, Varco is at the feet of Ottens, Djekurra at Mooneys feet etc.

Also we need to stop teams coimg to easily out of defense, this would mean putting forward defensive pressure.

Overall though, an exciting time for the cats.

I don't know where you have been but that is the way we have played for a looooong time now. We stomp on the rubbish sides because man for man we are a far superior outfit than the likes of Carlton when the game is played on our terms - we CAN play a running game when we are ALLOWED to by the opposition.

When the opposition drop men behind the ball the players run around like headless chooks, they just have nfi what to do to combat those tactics - see both Hawthorn games last year for all the evidence you need.

It is a coaching issue, a Thompson issue, and judging by what I saw in the NAB cup semi against Brisbane, Bomber still hasn't addressed this with the players and it is a big reason why I am still very sceptical of our ability to compete in September despite N.Ablett, Hawkins, Selwood, Varcoe and co. strengthening the playing core.

I actually think we play the wrong style of footy. Bomber has said we will play this new style, the West Coast style, but I don't think we're good enough at the minute. For a start, we don't have Cox, Kerr and Jude.

I really think we need to play the Sydney style. They are not the most talented team, but they are probably the most committed. I think our team would be better suited to this style of play (as horrible as it is to admit).

I dont think geelong will just play one style of footy all year. I think they will be a bit of a mix and match of some of the sides just mentioned above...to suit the playing list we have which is unique to ourselves....and on any given day RE the selected side.

I think concerns over the flood are warranted...I think as the season goes on progress will be made...how much progress will decide where we finish.

To be honest I think we need more than two weeks of this season to work out exactly what our game plan will be moving forward. Its seems not as black and white as some are trying to make out. Last night certainly gave cause for a rethink....thats just my opinion. Cant wait for next week to see what happens.

I think this is a very interesting point, although our lack of ball winning midfielders would hurt us playing a Sydney/Stoppage style. Our strength in our defenders setting up plays may point towards a more open game perhaps?

Yeah, I suppose. I guess I'm thinking the dogs game - they really hurt us when we turned it over. Also, I was at the carlton game, and we made a lot of mistakes there as well - we are lucky they were as bad as they were. A good team would have punished us on a number of occassions. Maybe we should play our own style. Given we beat the dogs last year, beat the swans and had the eagles on toast, maybe we should just play the Geelong brand, and stop trying to copy other teams....

im a carlton supporter and went to the game i thought you guys played really well the game was a good contest in the first half (finals type) but we couldnt handle the pressure. i really think geelong are the big sleepers and are set for a top 4 finish? what do geelong supporters think?

Take it one game at a time, predicting outcomes is useless and only leads to dented expectations.

I thought we played more of Sydney's style during our run in 04 and 05, no "superstars" just everyone working their rears off so support and cover each other. That gamestyle keeps the scores down and means while we would seldom blow teams off the park in games where we were down it meant we still had a sniff.
