I found out about it early this year, but never thought of signing up until a while later! :D

You have been added to the list... I look forward to reading more of your posts on here in the future.

Doesn't matter about the quantity of posts it's the quality that counts and Cats supporters are all quality. :D

I couldn't agree more with you there!!

I really don't think that alias' are being counted.

I can assue you that aliases aren't intentionally being counted, otherwise the Premier of Victoria, the honorable Steve Bracks would be on that list!! ;)

Cheers & Go Cats!!

But the thing is, this is a "Geelong Bigfooty Supporter Count", not a "if you happen to wander by post your name down along with all your aliases count".

On the West Coast board we got 40-something supporters, of which only 3 had under 50 posts.

daddy_4_eyes

A 'Geelong Bigfooty Supporter Count' is a list of the Geelong supporters who post on BigFooty. I didn't specify that they had to have posted a minimum of 50 posts or be here for a month to qualify for that list as that would be unfair to some people who don't post often or may be new to the site.

Cheers!!

Yep!! As the name says: GEELONG BIGFOOTY SUPPORTER COUNT. We are counting the number of Geelong supporters on BigFooty, nothing else!

Cats barrackers

This is the MAJOR problem facing the GFC... too many frickin barrackers and not enough SUPPORTERS.

For Jebus' sake! I can't stand anything worse than when a barracker tells me who should be playing where or ribbing me when we lose to 'their' team.

My rule: a membership card allows you an opinion, otherwise I don't want to know about it.

I live an hour north of Brisbane, and rang Geelong about interstate supporters. There prices for what they had to offer (compaired to other clubs) was crap. I don't mind giving a bit of money to watch one game live, but at least give me a function after the game with the players or something of the like.

Bakes,

Have you considered joining one of the club's official Interstate Supporter's Groups?? I'm pretty sure there's a Brisbane-based group but don't quote me on that... might be worth looking into.

Go Cats!!

SeinDude, I know there was a Brisbane Cats supporter group, whether it's still going I'm not sure, but there are a few Geelong supporters up in Brisbane. I'll have to check it up to see if they're still going!

Go Cats!!:)

Granted, I used the term "barrackers" to refer to the masses who pull for the club-- but you're right, SP... the GFC needs more paid-up members.

But in essence, we all support the club. As I said on another thread, if a significant percentage of those who bought memberships this year or during the offseason to date posted on this board, Bluey would be a very, very, very, very happy man. But anyone who feels passionately about the club and the direction in which it is headed is allowed to have an opinion on who plays, Thompson's tactics and decisions, etc.... shouldn't rob the masses of that right. :)

Nonetheless, by way of your semantical definitions, Jen and I will be paid-up members for the 2003 season. You have our word on that. :D

Cheers,
William

Wasn't there a membership called House Cat which was only about $50 ? That could be the ideal one for you.

Maybe this roll call will lure a few lurkers out of the woodwork and encourage them to post more often.

Oh yeah...I'm still here:)

Well...

I contacted the GFC today...and can confirm for a measly sum of cash I will be a Geelong member! 8 games @ Skilled Stadium...I'm not sure if that makes me a full member...but it was the cheapest option!

Now all I've gotta do is get into Deakin Arts/Journalism!

Sleepy hollow here we come!

Thanks champ!

I hear it's a very slick operation down there...I passed up on the 'family tradition' to attend Geelong Grammer, but now that I'm nearly finished to go down there would be great!

No no no no no no no. We all BARRACK for the same club.

People who buy memberships, seats, sponsorship packages etc SUPPORT the club.

sup·port (s-pôrt, -prt)
tr.v. sup·port·ed, sup·port·ing, sup·ports
- To bear the weight of, especially from below.
- To hold in position so as to keep from falling, sinking, or slipping.
- To be capable of bearing; withstand
- To keep from weakening or failing; strengthen
- To provide for or maintain, by supplying with money or necessities.
- To furnish corroborating evidence for
- To aid the cause, policy, or interests of
- To argue in favor of; advocate
- To endure; tolerate :) (this one is VERY applicable to GFC!)

I BARRACK for the New Jersey Devils, but I could give a toss if they folded. Hence, no SUPPORT.
I BARRACK for the Green Bay Packers, but I don't even know what, who or where a Green Bay is. Hence, no SUPPORT.
I BARRACKED for the Victoria Titans, but couldn't care less when they went under. Hence, no SUPPORT.

However, I SUPPORT the Geelong Football Club, through means of membership, seating, donations, attending functions.

This isn't just a GFC problem, it is the same for every club.
If you are passionate enough about your club to join an internet site and talk about football constantly, there is no reason why you can't buy a membership. You know it makes sense...

Just imagine if your team went under... I know I'd be gutted and would walk away from the game for good.

I tell you now, I couldn't think of anything worse. I would be a total wreck. All it takes is for people to buy memberships, and the club will be OK. We're still here, and now is the time to get a membership!! :)

Go Cats!!:)

Semantics over barracking vs. supporting aside-- and point well taken on your clarifications, BTW-- I agree that what you say is indeed something which every Australian Rules club, and not just limited to the AFL level, has to constantly deal with.

However, it's apples and oranges when it comes to the difference between posting on BigFooty and buying up a membership for the GFC-- or for Essendon, Collingwood, Hawthorn, et al. In the case of me and my wife, and as I said on another thread, and perhaps on this one, too, it all comes down to economics, and standard household economics at that, of some people.

What you say makes sense in theory-- some of those billboards in Geelong which say "Geelong minus members equals Fitzroy" is very compelling, no doubt about that. (Apologies in advance to any old Royboys and Roygirls reading this, we are quite sensitive to the plight your club went through some years ago.) However, in reality, if a young married couple doesn't pay its rent and bills, we get thrown out onto the street, simple as that.

Yet having said that on my soapbox, my wife and I are getting caught up on our bills, and Jen and I plan on buying memberships this year. You have our word on that.

Cheers,
William
