Geelong rorting the system

Yes, because it is a loaded question

Loaded questions can be good too, Stew

Dumb post. Quality of life. Ask the 45 other senior players.

45? Wow 45.

Lasts ask the tens and thousands of people that live in Craigieburn or Melton if it's good. I'm sure some like it.

I think a lot of people moved to the dystopia of Craigeburn because you know... a little more money in their pocket?

Sure... some people like to live on farms.. But is Geelong the only city in Vic that has access to farms?

Also your "lifestyle" tends to improve even you have more cash.

Why wouldn't you want to live in Geelong and take additional hours to travel to the city?

This is not a loaded ‘everyone has to be doing this because I personally did it post.’

But have you stopped to consider that people, especially ones who do already earn a huge amount and provided they’ve done nothing stupid with it, may have already set themselves up for life, can afford to make changes that just suit them for whatever reason?

In his case he initiated the whole thing by saying ‘I want to leave Carlton and there are at least 2 (Sydney and Geelong) possibly 3 (Gold Coast) places I want to go.’ So he’s clearly unhappy there. That’s probably a combination of the workplace, and the city.

At the start of this year I decided to leave my home town of 22 years where I work and where I live for a small town 40km away. I pay an extra $200 a fortnight in rent. I still end up driving back into that town (it hosted a very big sporting event yesterday) and my kids still go to school there, I still work there when I go into the office but I desperately needed a change in lifestyle and to get away from some factors that were making me f**king miserable. I’m 40km closer to my mum and dad and my actual home town where I was born and raised.

My cost of living is much higher so combined with the extra rent I’ve basically taken a large pay cut relative to my modest wage (I used to shop at Aldi now I just buy everything at the local IGA) and I spend a fortune on fuel. And I’m much much happier than I was previously. It isn’t inconceivable that people do it

i'd be tempted to move back to the country down the track. i enjoy living in melbourne but i think some days it's just overwhelming and sad.

I think once upon a time there was a lot less emphasis on winning a flag. Players certainly liked it - obviously they always have - but before the age of ultra-professionalism a club could be a happy place even without being a winning one so you had players willing to be at clubs for huge periods without necessarily winning a lot and just being content to get their pay cheque and play on and it was the lure of a huge huge pay rise that would get them out of there rather than just cut and dried success that would remove them.

They were often playing in areas that were familiar to them and happy enough to be there.

That’s changed a lot now and the general atmosphere of a club is dictated by their proximity to success and if players aren’t a whiff of having it, they aren’t usually especially happy. Couple that with being in an actual place that doesn’t thrill them and of course they will want a change of scenery

Why is it that some nuffies on this board espouse that a worker putting quality of life ahead of money is improbable?

Because it only seems to occur for players going to or staying at Geelong FC.

So you think wow, must be an incredible place to live. You check property prices v Sydney, Melbourne etc and then think if Geelong is such an incredible place to live compared to other places, why are property prices so cheap there in comparison...something doesn't quite add up right here sttewpy wwewpy.

That's where you're wrong. Like dozens of other posters you've just guessed.

Median house price in Torquay (where so many Geelong footballers live) is $1.2 million. In Melbourne median house oprice is $953K and in Geelong it is $870K

Medicority, you're dead right; something doesn't quite add up in your post, and that's your ability to research basics before posting.

It’s $100k difference in median house price between Geelong and Melbourne. Wow, huge.

You compare the chosen part of the district around Geelong to compare to average Melbourne home prices.

Now shall we choose a chosen part of Melbourne to compare to average Geelong prices?

Elwood for eg where Spendlebury lives....$2.3m average property price, v $870k in Geelong.

Footscray where the Western Bulldogs are based, $1.06m average property price.

So if the greater community rates living in Footscray 20% higher than living in Geelong, why exactly are footballers rating living in Geelong much higher than living in Footscray - judging by the endless string of players prepared to take unders at Geelong, and a string of exactly zero footballers prepared to take unders to play at the Bulldogs?

Something still doesn't add up here Sttewpy Weewpy.

Because his ability to earn a million is extremely limited once footy is done
And Geelong and its little beach isn’t a vast improvement on life in Melbourne
If you talk Perth , Gold Coast or Sydney it’s an improvement if you are after warm weather and good beaches.

Charlie's family place is 5 (oh heck lets get conservative and say it's 7) minutes to Bells/Winki and 15 minutes to Cat Park. Lets say he bought that super duper Elwood Shack and wants to go for a surf....its 54 minutes to the wave pool at Tulla....

Can ya spot the lifestyle difference yet?

Stop trying to compare how fantastic the lifestyle is in Melbourne for people who don't want to be there....just sayin.

Would not have an issue with this if Curnow wasn't one of a mysteriously long list of players who have been prepared to take lower money at Geelong than elsewhere.

I’d give back both flags to see Geelong officials do some hard time for the wrongs they’ve committed against this great competition we call the AFL.

No need for that. Like v us in 2020, they cheated against you and you still beat them in the Grand Final.

Would be nice to see Cats cheating that has already been unofficially exposed be officially exposed with appropriate penalties.

Hence all you have to do is just type a generic search like ‘median Melbourne/geelong house price’ into a search and you come up with a difference of usually a little less than $100,000. Anyone can choose to find a particularly expensive house if they want, or a particularly cheap one if they’re looking in the right spot. You’re the one who loves using median so much so use it.

Doesn't change my point.

General public are paying 20% more to live in Footscray than Geelong.

Footballers mysteriously charge more to play for a club based in Footscray than one based in Geelong.

Yeah you would.

You have an issue with everything. You spend day after day telling the world how three quarters of our list is dogshit and then trying to tell the world they’re all worth Lance Franklin money 😂😂

Yeah I’m not sure every player contracted to the Bulldogs is living in the Footscray postcode but keep thinking that.
I doubt Medicority has ventured anywhere west of the CBD in the past 60 years

So Surf Coast doesn't have good beaches? Most of the footballers live in Torquay, Jan Juc, Bellbrae, Barwon Heads and further out (Moggs Creek). Some of the best surf beaches in the world.
