Re: Near Perfect Game??

Geez those figures are so good to see. There was a few years there where they killed us home or away.

I was thinking that too when I was watching the game today. I couldn't help but muse that if this Cats team was inspired by the big bodied Lions of 2001-2004 and remember the beatings they suffered during that time, are the young players of the Lions going to remember these margins in the coming years?

Re: Near Perfect Game??

New policy. Unless there is a player 20m in the clear Mooney and Hawkins have to take a shot on goal within 50m. Have to get this shit sorted out before the pressure games.

Both Mooney and Hawkins look like they have absolutely no confidence in taking set shots. They should be nailing these in their sleep!!!

As you said, this is a real problem that WILL eventually bite us on the ass. No question.

Did we enjoy that?

That was sweet. Really, it was. Can you remember the monsterings they used to give us? We didn't beat the Bears/Lions for ten years straight at one stage. Every time we fronted up, they would hammer us by ten goals. They were bigger, stronger, more intimidating & they made sure we knew it.

How sweet it was to be the bully.

I had a similar feeling smashing West Coast in Perth last year.

Nice review DanA. I needed some stats as the tv at the pub didn't have the sound on.

Just a couple of points. Even though Harry did a good job on Brown you would still have to say that Brown made the most of his chances. 3 goals from 6 kicks and kicked more than 50% of his teams goals. Not saying much I know considering what Brisbane scored.

As to Blake and Mumford. It was a good effort but let's keep things in perspective. They didn't ruck against one proper ruckman all game. Brisbane didn't have a ruck division today.

Hawkins and Mumford having 9 and 10 tackles respectively is very pleasing for big fellas.

As one of the games premier forwards I have expect him to have an impact on the game when faced with an realtively green opponent. 3 goals is a good return but watching the game I wasn't all that impressed with him.

Regarding Blake and Mumford, deffinately worth mention Brisbanes lack of a ruckmen. Brennan was in their at one stage.

Its not as if Mumford has a heap of experience though. He showed some very efforts against ruckman who are probably on pair with him, if not usually slightly better. Blake did what was expected, but its still good to see him going around the ground.

not seeing much of the cats this year but from what I have seen Mark Blake has really improved.. Looks good for the future considering Hawkins and Selwood are looking good also. We looked good sunday and great to see Moonster play like he did in 2007.

Question.

I know that it wasnt the ideal day for big men as touted in various media outlets but I have a question regarding the speed of the game and Hawkins.

Does anyone think that he perhaps had a day out because the game was slower, thus bringing him into it more? First off was it a little slower because of the weather and second could this be a possibility. I hope not but was just thinking...

I think you're right that the weather had something to do with it. Brisbane looked like they were handling a bar of soap at times which slowed down their play and allowed Geelong to tackle and pressure, Hawkins included. I am not sure how many forward 50 tackles we had but it seem a lot.

In clear weather I don't think though we can expect Tom to be chasing his opponents down either. He's going to be like Jonathon Brown who Tom seems to have similar attributes to. So he's going to have to rely on getting into the game by having the ball directed to him. He's not going to play in a lot of games that have similar conditions to those on Sunday but hopefully with experience and game time he'll find a rapport with the midfield.

That said, his skills were pretty clean except for those two missed shots on goal in the 3rd.

Thanks Tay29. Hopefully I can watch the game tomorrow and see for myself. Still a good step for the big fella, hopefully he can keep it up in all conditions.
