We had a MF comprising Bartel, Kelly, Corey, Ling, GAJ, Rooke- all very similar , apart from GAJ. We just need players who can win the ball.
Particularly on a wet day, I want guys like Atkins, Clark, Bruhn, Bowes, & Parfitt around the footy.

Beautiful day in September on a wide open ground, then we might have to drop 1 or two...but it should be fine for tomorrow.

Very noticeable how clean he is below his knees now and how efficient he’s disposing of it now compared to a few games ago.

He used to kick like a gaelic footballer. Very up and under. The last few weeks I reckon his kicking has been a bit flatter and more pinpoint, like decent AFL kicks.

It's an effing Saturday night. Where are the teams?

Saturday teams are announced on a Thursday. Where are our teams?
It's ridiculous not announced tonight as all others get
If Conway plays really well and looks better than Stanley has looked all year…do we play him v the Dogs off a 5 day break?
He'll get dropped for Stanley regardless of how he plays unfortunately

My son has gone football crazy and ran into the bathroom to tell me that the Swans loss can see us go top of the ladder with a big enough win. Anyone know what score we need to make up 50 points?
There’s a huge array of scores this early in the season, but a 150-50 would give us a percentage of 165% (same as GWS).

I'd be rapt with a 1 point win, although my heart won't be thrilled. Tigers win reminds us that ladder positions mean bugger-all in March and April. Expecting a nail-biter and can only hope we get up for Tommy (and Ollie).

If Mannagh played VFL yesterday it would have been a 7 day break until our next match

Only reason I can see to hold him over is there is/was uncertainty over a named player
They try to have two hold backs if they can (Stanley doesn’t count) which they have and they might go down to 1 if vfl playing same day. But as you alluded to with 2 coming back from injury it made sense 2-3 days out to play to have the 2 hold backs. Just in case. I am not expecting a change though.

Also in this circumstance we have a 5 day turnaround interstate against a good team so I am convinced they have Mannagh and 2E set for a call up next round. Mannagh whilst a mature body is still getting used to AFL rigour so not bad idea to give him a weeks rest too

I reckon if Bews had played the exact same game as Mullin last week we would've heard a lot of "he shut Rankine out of the game", "we've got nobody else to play on the small forwards", etc.

With Mullin it's that he's miles off it and needs 10+ games in the VFL.
The club see him very differently to what the fans see or want to see. Me included sometimes. I look at his pace and want him to be a half back runner setting up the play. Which over time he may well turn into.

But the club see him as a shut down defender. Using closing speed and competitiveness and strength to lock out a small forward. Indeed 2E said on SEN last week that this is what Mullin was famous for in Gaelic footy.

If I view it that way I do understand why he stayed in ahead of Mannagh (who earlier in the week I thought would be sub and Mullin out).

I am going to watch it more closely tomorrow

Very harsh on mannagh i assume its load management more than anything and he will be straight back in on sat in adel. We probably also wanted a run into bowes.

Other than that straightforward changes.
Looking forward to seeing conway.

I doubt parfitt atkins bruhn and bowes all in the same midfield is viable (they are all too similar). But this is a game worth trying it in.
Agree. As I said in another post I assume despite his maturity they will be cautious I suspect in terms of building into AFL career. He also is suffering from “pecking order” which would have him number 8 in the forward line (Rohan not counted). I personally think over time he (or Dempsey) might sneak into that MF group but for now it looks like they are trying to give a bunch of people a chance to secure MF roles.

As you say I would be suprised if he doesn’t play next week. Maybe giving one of the small forwards a rest? I also suspect Neale comes in for Hawk for Gather Round. And 2E in for someone

I reckon the plan is clear…get Conway in and Stanley a rest for next week against English. Risking Conway off a 5 day break given his history doesn’t seem sensible?

But plans have to be flexible so in your scenario that would make then reassess the plan that is for sure

Really looking forward to how our young midfield goes up against the Hawks equivalent. Going to be interesting. Newcombe, Nash and Worpel are bigger bodies than our lot albeit I think ours have more talent. I think it will be a tight game. Particularly in the conditions forecast.

So what time does one need to arrive to secure decent GA seats on level Q?
First couple of rows?

For same reason I can see him in for Clark during the week so Clark can take a break.

Problem with rebuilds and their different stages is Nash is more akin to MOC in both age and performance, and we don't really have a Worpel comparison, with the closest being Bowes.

Newcombe's a good one to compare though. Hopefully our boys can match him, as he's a gun when he's up and going. Would love him in Cats colours.

I think tomorrow should give us some indication where we are at with our midfield post Selwood/Dangerfield/C.Guthrie. Clearly the Hawks aren’t the best going around and haven’t started the year well but they have some young talent and will be smarting to get over us tomorrow.

If we hold sway in the midfield it is a positive indicator that the likes of Bruhn and Clark will be at least solid long term contributors or even more. I still think our midfield is a work in progress and we will need at least another 1-2 genuine A graders if we are to really challenge down the track. Whether a couple of our current lot will reach that standard is unclear at the moment.

A couple of tidbits from history, I’d like to see in tomorrow’s game.

On 31 March 1984, Gary Ablett Sr played his first game for Geelong, at Kardinia Park.
Geelong 23.10.148 def Fitzroy 15.9.99

Goals:
Jacko - 9
Johnston - 5
GAS - 3

I’d love to see a score like that for Hawkins’ 350th game. One day after GAS’s debut 40 years ago.

Greg Williams had 38 Disposals that day. + the game is faster today?

Was at that game. Centreline- Turner Williams Ablett - nearly 100 disposals.
The physique of GAS in that season was outrageous.
