I welcome playing the Pies week 1
We have a storied recent modern history v Pies finals
Look forward to it
I was thinking about this this morning.

Seventh finals match up with one another since 2007. Split 4-2 in Geelong’s favour.

Would be interested to know which finals match up has recurred second most since 2000?

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.
Blame your club for not having a better stadium. It's really not that hard is it? Just build a bigger stadium.

Everyone who follows AFL apart from Geelong supporters.

I’ll ask again.

Who is it you’re addressing that is advocating for playing this game in Geelong.

So far I count one person on an Internet forum and a couple of others who have pointed out that fairness says we should but that it’s not realistic so who cares.

It was unfair but I don’t buy that.

You’re professional footballers and one of the greatest groups of them ever assembled. If you’re not used to a bit of travel by that stage of your journey as a team you never will be
Matthews certainly thinks it cost them.

That final would have been a much easier win at home you would think.

It should be at the G.

As the home team Geelong should get a preferred fixturing time.

Looking forward to it.

There is an argument that when KP holds > 40k then it gets week 1 or 2 finals. (Same with Docklands)

It is true that MCG tenants can have relative mediocrity rewarded in these scenarios but I guess that's just part of it all.
It doesnt have to be part of it. Just because its the way it has been done doesnt mean it should continue.

choosing the time of game adds virtually no value given there is a bye and week off before finals. Its no different to winning a coin toss in a game with no breeze.

I don't care, you can't change it, and people are sick of Geelong supporters and Chris Scott whinging.
You get the softest fixture in the league every year and you still complain.
The OP's opening whinge got 2 likes, 41 Ha Ha's, 5 disagrees and 6 sarcastic loves.
If you're good enough to win the flag you'll win it.
You don't have to play any interstate games this final series.
You can't rely on getting cheap wins at Kardina Park to win you a flag.

It doesnt have to bevpart of it. Just bevause its the way it has been done doesnt mean it shouod continue.

Yeah I agree with the logic here. "That's the way we've always done it" is one of the worst reasons you'll hear for anything.

I for one think the GF should be rotated like the Superbowl. Saints should get home finals at Docklands.

But these are broader discussions for a more general thread. Not for a thread on the eve of the finals, suggesting that a specific final be played at a ground that doesn't even currently hold 30000 people.

I mean seriously.

If kardinia can hold 50k then I’m all for it.

What’s the current capacity?
Why is 50k a limit? Thats still 50k less then the mcg.

finals grounds are not about maximising crowds. If so most interstate finals would also be at the mcg.

its about fairness. But no one complains about fairness when it only negatively impacts one team. They just call that team sooks.

im guessing everyone will suddenly realise that geelong has been treated unfairly and it must end when gold coast earns a home final against brisbane. That will be the day this bias against geelong in finals ends. Bookmark it.

That’s a relief after the 0 times I’ve advocated for it to be changed.

The reason Geelong don't play finals at Kardina Park is the same reason why Hawthorn don't play finals at York Park or the Western Bulldogs don't play finals at Eureka Stadium, it's simply a secondary ground and not suitable for finals
Except kardinia park is not geelongs secondary ground. Its the only ground in its home city. Hawthorn and bulldogs are melbourne teams.

So you're happy to play at the G next week. What are we arguing about then?
Interstate clubs deserve a home final as they travel much more than Victorian clubs. That travel has an effect on players.

Does that not already happen with WBD, Saints, North etc?

If not, why not?

Marvel used to get some finals, but it had little to do with the tenants. Hawthorn have hosted Geelong (2000) and Adelaide (2007) there for example, and I can't remember if the MCG was available or not.

The MCG being preferred for Vic finals is a relatively new thing. In the days of Waverly and the final five, there was a game at Waverley in week1 and week2, and often the (only) prelim was also played there.

I think this mentality stayed when Docklands started in 2000. But somewhere along the way it's been all about the MCG. Not 100% sure of the background or reasoning.
