UPDATED 20/11/2021

It's been a big few weeks pouring over a lot of different content but now the fun starts and we can all sit down and praise/ protest our recruiting managers this week.. This will be my last update i think and I'm intrigued as to how well I've gone by Wednesday and Thursday.

Again, have a read, enjoy it, comment what you wish within reason as negativity will be frowned upon and constructive criticism will get a much better response. Happy to engage in healthy debate on my selections where my rationale isn't clear enough but don't resort to unwarranted or unnecessary personal attacks

Happy to agree to disagree and you might even sway my decision another way with a compelling argument against a player/ pick selection.

PICK 2: WESTERN BULLDOGS F/S - Sam Darcy (matching GWS bid with their 3rd round picks and pushing out a pick later)

Round 1 picks 1 and 10 - PICKS AND RATIONALE

PICK 1 – NORTH: JASON HORNE – FRANCIS
HEIGHT: 184 CM ~ WEIGHT: 78 KG ~ DOB: 21/06/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER / FORWARD ~ CLUB: SOUTH ADELAIDE

RATIONALE:
Best player in the draft in my opinion. Don't fart around with a bid here.

PICK 2 – BULLDOGS F/S MATCH: SAM DARCY
HEIGHT: 204 CM ~ WEIGHT: 75 KG ~ DOB: 19/08/03
POSITION: TALL UTILITY~ CLUB: OAKLEIGH

RATIONALE:
See Darcy as more of a list profile need than Daicos is. List profile isn't generally factored in and GWS bid knowing full well that Bulldogs match within an instant.

Will land at the Dogs no matter where the bid comes and is an intriguing prospect. Talent wise he may be able to work his way into a back line that is arguably a quality tall short behind Keath and there has been a revolving door sometimes.

His versatility is a clear stand out and if you can build a spine with Darcy at one end and Naughton / Ugle – Hagan at the other end for the next 10 – 15 years that is a scary proposition. All players rated and or drafted inside the top 5 / 10 picks in their respective draft years.

PICK 3 - GWS: MAC ANDREW
HEIGHT: 200 CM ~ WEIGHT: 70 KG ~ DOB: 12/04/03
POSITION: RUCK/ KEY POSITION ~ CLUB: DANDENONG STINGRAYS

RATIONALE:
Change here from my initial selection of Gibcus where I think GWS could still definitely bring in a key defender later in the draft or as a rookie depending on points used for a Josh Fahey match

It’s the first NGA bid here and Andrew lands at GWS due to recent changes ruling Melbourne out of a match.

Power ranking wise he is inside that next tier behind the top 3 and GWS do not always tend to go best available as has been seen in the past with Ash and Taranto.

Having recently lost Mumford from the senior list, though has nominated again for draft, and with the versatility and upside in Mac he is definitely someone who they can give time and energy into while he continues to build on his strength because he is extremely raw but athletically super gifted.

In the mix here are Gibcus who meets a KPD need and the best available in Callaghan.

PICK 4 – COLLINGWOOD F/S MATCH: NICK DAICOS
HEIGHT: 183 CM ~ WEIGHT: 72 KG ~ DOB: 03/01/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: OAKLEIGH CHARGERS

RATIONALE:
Daicos and JHF like a lot before me would have said are the stand out talents in the draft and like JHF I can see Daicos finding an immediate role at Collingwood.

Does go against my rationale for JHF over Daicos at pick 1 because Daicos hasn’t heard the greater exposure at NAB League level due to COVID or at VFL level but his talent suggests that their will become an available role permitting no pre season setbacks.

PICK 5 – GOLD COAST: FINN CALLAGHAN
HEIGHT: 189 CM ~ WEIGHT: 82 KG ~ DOB: 26/04/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS

RATIONALE:
Likely to be the only pick used by the Suns given their list numbers and additional academy picks and it is a bit of a raffle in terms of if they feel its best to go best available, potentially meet a KPP need in Gibcus, or go for a high upside player who is raw as but fills a list need in Mac Andrew.

I don’t think Gibcus would be a requirement to list needs but with limited live picks they may look at it.

Callaghan brings more of an outside game than inside leaning game but his strengths really suit that style of play with his clean disposal, penetration by foot, ability to move through traffic and composure with the ball telling.

PICK 6 – ADELAIDE: JOSH RACHELLE
HEIGHT: 179 CM ~ WEIGHT: 77 KG ~ DOB: 11/04/03
POSITION: FORWARD / MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: MURRAY BUSHRANGERS

RATIONALE:
A bit of a jack in the box pick here for the Crows who from all reports are well interested in Rachele and it’s easy to see why.

There’s clearly more bankable options available in Josh Ward and Ben Hobbs for example however Rachele’s strengths in his finishing power, smarts with the ball and x factor make him an attractive option for the Crows and could use him as a crumber to Thilthorpe as a KPF from the 2020 draft

Hard to predict where Rachele lands because he isn’t as much of a bankable player as others available and there are concerns over his defensive capacity which he will need to work on but in terms of playing to his strengths he doesn’t look out of place inside the top 5 live picks.

PICK 7 – HAWTHORN: JOSH WARD
HEIGHT: 181 CM ~ WEIGHT: 79 KG ~ DOB: 15/08/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: NORTHERN KNIGHTS

RATIONALE:
Bit of a change from my initial placings here as well with a swap of Rachele and Ward which I’m sure is to please Hawks fans.

As a young and developing competitive midfielder his key traits of his endurance, consistency, skills and decision making make him a viable pick here and seems to be a favourite amongst Hawks fans particularly given that ability to hit the scoreboard over the bankable inside mid of Hobbs where Hawthorn do have a number of similar players in that 1 – 5 year age bracket.

PICK 8 – FREMANTLE: NASIAH WANGANNEN MILERA
HEIGHT: 188 CM ~ WEIGHT: 70 KG ~ DOB: 22/02/03
POSITION: MID / DEF ~ CLUB: GLENELG

RATIONALE:
Little bit controversial given that availability of Erasmus here as arguably the best WA product but I’ve gone for a need here at the Dockers with Nasiah’s disposal efficiency by foot rated the best of the draft crop.

Widely regarded as the best field kick in the draft and has risen above the likes of Draper and Roberts in terms of the best SA prospects to fall behind Horne – Francis only.

His strengths in the use of the ball, composure with it in hand and decision making make him a great wing or half back option for the Dockers where he will be able to break a line with a penetrating kick.

PICK 9 – RICHMOND: BEN HOBBS
HEIGHT: 183 CM ~ WEIGHT: 80 KG ~ DOB: 16/09/03
POSITION: INSIDE MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: GWV REBELS

RATIONALE:
Some solid feedback and good rationale here from Tigers fans has swayed me into Hobbs here and is clearly a needs based selection also given the older Richmond midfield and a more bankable midfielder than Draper would’ve been at their second pick.

In terms of pure inside mids this draft the only one who would be ahead is Horne Francis and JHF ability to move forward and impact the scoreboard I think tends to make him more a mid / fwd.

As an inside player he brings the key qualities that you’d want and expect in terms of his hunt for the contest, his consistency, the way he accumulates the ball at will and his pressure defensively.

PICK 10 – FREMANTLE: NEIL ERASMUS
HEIGHT: 188 CM ~ WEIGHT: 80 KG
POSITION: FWD / MID ~ CLUB: SUBIACO

RATIONALE:
I've long slated Amiss here but the uncertainty around Fyfe even with the addition of Will Brodie to replace Cerra to me suggests that maybe a midfield or mid/ fwd focus could be the Dockers thinking. They do have 21 which they could use on a tall or later in the draft.

They may even be able to pluck out another Josh Treacy selection late who should never have been available from the rookie draft unless recruiters knew something we don't.

Round 1 picks 11 to 21 - PICKS AND RATIONALE

PICK 11: ST. KILDA – JOSH GOATER
HEIGHT: 190 CM ~ WEIGHT: 79 KG ~ DOB: 02/06/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER / DEFENDER ~ CLUB: CALDER CANNONS

RATIONALE:
What clubs in the 11 – 20 range will like about Goater is the versatility he brings and upside. As a midfielder he is that modern midfielder size that is so highly regarded these days.

His size and ability to power away from stoppages will make him an attractive player to whichever club drafts him.

PICK 12: WEST COAST – MATTHEW JOHNSON
HEIGHT: 193 CM ~ WEIGHT: 80 KG ~ DOB: 16/03/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER ~ CLUB: SUBIACO

RATIONALE:
My ideal pick here would be Erasmus and Hobbs ticks a lot of boxes for me also but I’m not upset that Matt Johnson is still on the board here either.

Simpson has spoken of a desire to bring in mids this draft which I love the thought of, but you just never know with our recruiting team.

I think where the list currently sits Johnson is a great safe bet and if we can roll Josh Browne from East Fremantle into the mix with even Greg Clark later in the piece I’d be a happy man.

The latest coming from the club is they are heavily into Josh Goater, I’d be happy with either but my prefence is leaning towards Johnson

PICK 13: ESSENDON – JOSH SINN
HEIGHT: 186 CM ~ WEIGHT: 82 KG ~ DOB: 07/01/03
POSITION: MIDFIELDER / DEFENDER ~ CLUB: SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS

RATIONALE:
Essendon trump Port Adelaide for Sinn here who Port would've loved next pick

Sinn’s strength is his desire to take the game on with run and carry and break lines with a long kick also advantageous to a half back/ wing role at AFL level.

PICK 14: PORT ADELAIDE – ARLO DRAPER
HEIGHT: 185 CM ~ WEIGHT: 71 KG ~ DOB: 20/02/03
POSITION: MID/ FWD ~ CLUB: SOUTH ADELAIDE

RATIONALE:
Having just missed Sinn and still wanting t bring more class to the table I've gone local with Draper.

Still a way off from consistently contributing as a mid and will be a dangerous forward around Dixon and Georgiades initially but with Fantasia, Butters, Rozee, Durrsma and the like will be another creative and skillful option.

Slides a little bit due to the fact that is in recovery from an AC Joint injury sustained in the State game on AFL Grand Final day which will delay his pre season starting date.

As a high half forward I think initially what he brings is a whole lot of class, great forward craft and a strong overhead mark for his size.

The next challenge being to turn that into midfield minutes where he has the midfield traits but needs to work at two way run. His patterns lean more to a attacking player with stoppage smarts.

PICK 15: GWS – TYLER SONSIE
WRITE UP TO COME

PICK 16: BRISBANE – JOSH GIBCUS
HEIGHT: 195 CM ~ WEIGHT: 84 KG ~ DOB: 04/04/03
POSITION: KEY DEF ~ CLUB: GWV REBELS

RATIONALE:
I’ve turned the versatile Van Rooyen into the rock solid defender Gibcus here from my initial first round.

Gibcus is a genuine floater who I could see going as high as pick 4 with a needs based pick to the Giants, sitting around the middle of where I have him now in that spate of two Fremantle and 1 x Richmond picks or as low as here to the Lions but I wouldn’t imagine any lower.

The value Gibcus and Van Rooyen present to Brisbane is that as I mentioned prior with JVR that apart from Jack Payne, Tom Fullarton as a fwd/ 2nd ruck and possibly Connor Ballenden if he stays as a rookie there is no other key position players under 22 on the list.

PICK 17: RICHMOND – JYE AMISS
WRITE UP TO FOLLOW

PICK 18: SYDNEY – MITCH KNEVITT
HEIGHT: 193 CM ~ WEIGHT: 81 KG ~ DOB: 08/01/2003
POSITION: INSIDE MID / FWD ~ CLUB: GEELONG FALCONS

RATIONALE:
Bit of a change in my mindset with the Swans here where I initially linked them with Wilmot as a Dawson trade off.

The reasoning is that it will always be easier to find a taller bigger bodied mid now than in the later 20s or early 30s unless going with a more mature option. Nod to the future post JPK in Knevitt who will offer great versatility given his athletic traits that he can potentially play as a third tall or lead up forward also. His ability to mark in a contest and upside lend to thinking he will bring a lot to the table even if not as a midfielder immediately.

PICK 19: MELBOURNE – DARCY WILMOT
HEIGHT: 183 CM ~ WEIGHT: 75 KG ~ DOB: 31/12/2003
POSITION: GENERAL DEFENDER ~ CLUB: NORTHERN KNIGHTS

RATIONALE:
The reigning premier can still do with some more quaility depth on the outside going forward I think which is why I've earmarked Wilmot.

My mind has flipped and flopped between outside backs/ wings and KPP's but I've reverted back to the initial model of outside player rather than the tall Van Rooyen.

The strengths to Wilmot's game show great potential as a half back or outside wing and although probably the youngest in the draft (birthday on 31/12) you notice when he is out their that he doesn’t allow for his later birthday or lack of size compared to others to be a downfall using his strengths exceptionally well.

PICK 20: BRISBANE – CAMPBELL CHESSER
HEIGHT: 186 CM ~ WEIGHT: 83 KG ~ DOB: 27/04/2003
POSITION: MID / DEF ~ CLUB: SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS

RATIONALE:
Pairing up Gibcus with another Victorian product here in Chesser who will bring some added depth to the younger attackingl defender stocks with Birchall now retired and Rich nearing the end.

Good size already so with a strong pre-season he may be able to be in the mix for an early debut but would benefit just as much from working alongside Rich. His game strengths in terms of outside running and looking to break lines lends itself well to an attacking half back role and aspects to his midfield craft are still a work in progress but has the speed and class to be an asset quickly.

PICK 21: FREMANTLE – JESSE MOTLOP
HEIGHT: 177 CM ~ WEIGHT: 77 KG
POSITION: SMALL FWD ~ CLUB: SOUTH FREO

RATIONALE:
Maybe a bit of a surprise here for the Dockers here but I think Jesse adds to the class brought in with Milera and the need of Amiss.

The other rationale is that due to the Metro NGA rules that any bid inside the first 2 rounds can't be matched be Fremantle for Jesse and with no second round pick this is their last chance saloon to get Motlop in. If they happen to pass I think the talent of Motlop means that he will be gone during the 2nd round.

The son of North and Port Adelaide forward Daniel the strengths to Motlop's game that will attract recruiters are a common Motlop trait with his craft and footy smarts a definite weapon and has built some great confidence in his own game through draft year form.

Broke into South Fremantle's League side late in 2021 and was part of their Grand Final side. Pair him with Henry who was brought in via NGA a couple fo drafts ago plus the damaging outside play of Frederick and the like with the recently drafted Milera and that's exciting for Freo

pick 22; Mitch Knevitt.

There you go. Saved you a bit of work.

The question is, is he going to Fremantle, or has Geelong paid to move up?

Haven’t seen Zac Taylor spelt that way before 😂

Still working my way through the full 2nd round. I’ve been gotten down to Sheldrick at WC’s second pick and Sam Butler to Geelong iirc

What are you thinking instead?

Absolutely has to be best available mid at pick 5 for Hawthorn. Likely Ward or Hobbs. Consensus seems to be that Ward suits our needs far more. Hobbs still a quality young mid if we picked him despite similarities to our current midfield group.

Tigers ruck stocks aren't that bad with Nank, Soldo, Ryan, Colina and Balta who can pinch hit, what we are in need of though is young KPP's particularly forward. Most think that our top priority though is an inside mid.

I know you've gone with best available at our 1st, but I think the same rationale that you used for the other teams could also be applied to Richmond.

Hobbs, if available, fits a need and is also best available as a mid at pick 9.

The last sentence is why I went with the X factor of Rachele over the more bankable commodity in Hobbs.

Ward I think lands at the Crows but at the same time i read one article over the weekend questioning if he wants to go to a non Vic club.

Only one article so not substantial evidence but, and that alone hasn’t turned the Crows off a draftee before.

Great work getGaff. I like it. As a Dees man, consider JVR as our most likely. But definitely agree that Chesser brings a lot in terms of outside run, skill, footy smarts and can win his own footy. Add in a really smart young man and he’s a very draftable pick for the Dees. Probably slides to 19-20 due to injury and limited game time in 2021.

Can't see Richmond taking Andrew when Hobbs is on the board given how much that have been linked to him. Even if it's not him they'd probably take Johnson as they need bigger bodied midfielders more than they need a long term development tall.

Welcome all

Back for another year of fun and I guess as a West Coast fan this years draft excites me more than most others due to holding a live top 10 pick, obviously pushed out with Daicos and Darcy but I think we will still have good midfield talent to pick from at 12. Can't stress that word midfield enough either in West Coast's case.

Have a read, enjoy it, comment what you wish within reason as negativity will be frowned upon and constructive criticism will get a much better response. Happy to engage in healthy debate on my selections where my rationale isn't clear enough but don't resort to unwarranted or unnecessary personal attacks

Happy to agree to disagree and you might even sway my decision another way with a compelling argument against a player.
I'll leave post 2 and 3 as my deep dive with rationale around the first round picks but after that point from 2nd round onwards it will likely just be a player name.

PICK 1: NORTH MELBOURNE - Jason Horne Francis
PICK 2: COLLINGWOOD F/S - Nick Daicos (matching GWS bid)
PICK 3: WESTERN BULLDOGS F/S - Sam Darcy (matching GWS bid)
PICK 4: GWS - Josh Gibcus
PICK 5: GOLD COAST - Finn Callaghan
PICK 6: ADELAIDE - Josh Ward
PICK 7: HAWTHORN - Josh Rachele
PICK 8: FREMANTLE - Neil Erasmus
PICK 9: RICHMOND - Mac Andrew
PICK 10: FREMANTLE - Jye Amiss

PICK 11: ST. KILDA - Ben Hobbs
PICK 12: WEST COAST - Matthew Johnston
PICK 13: ESSENDON - Nasiah Wanganeen Milera
PICK 14: PORT ADELAIDE - Josh Sinn
PICK 15: GWS - Josh Goater
PICK 16: BRISBANE - Jacob Van Rooyen
PICK 17: RICHMOND - Arlo Draper
PICK 18: GWS ACADEMY - Josh Fahey (matching Sydney bid)
PICK 19: SYDNEY - Darcy Wilmot
PICK 20: MELBOURNE - Campbell Chesser
PICK 21: BRISBANE - Tyler Sonsie
as a Tiger would put my house on it our first 2 pics would be inside mids or 1 inside and one out on the wing , we have 4 players in our squad that are 30 and over Would love Hobbs and Ward , but would also love Chesser half back/winger that carries the ball similar to Houli

Want WC to take Johnson but think he may be gone before pick 12..Second choice would be Erasmus.
