WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. Oof...not the night I was hoping for.

If we were going to trade our Future 1st, I wanted Henry. Would have even done our Future 1st and Essendon Future 2nd to make that happen. Sucks to watch him to go to the filth, but hopefully he heads back down the highway in 2 years when they've imploded.

Holmes does not fill me with confidence, but Neale absolutely does. Stephens is a typical Wells special, and will most likely be a good ready to go player ala Stewart.

C+ for our draft, but when I think of how our draft could have been -

Future 1st and 2nd for Henry and a pick
33 for Neale
47 for Ford

it makes me a little sad
Who were we going to trade with to get Henry?

There really want too many options for trading back into the first round

Jumping ahead a bit, but what type of players do we think the club will look for in next years draft? Off the top of my head a Key forward and rebounding half back flank?
We've gone for players that are taller and need maybe 2 years to be close to consideration. I guess that we'd look at a cohort of kids who will take a year to get to the same point. I think contested mids might become an issue with Parfitt our only established kid really. That's my bet

Pies killed it tonight, some awesome class in those picks. Eagles with Winder at 57 is just crazy
After the shit fest that was their trade period, they needed to get something right tonight

Things I didn't want in the draft:

Trading out 2021 capital
Another ruck after we picked up Tsapatolis
Another 190cm defender

That said all the kids we picked up look worth a shot. Heath looks like he could be a star if we develop him right. Neale looks a monster. Stevens at the pick looks like a fair call.

I am going to get real impatient waiting to watch some 2s games next year
I really like the Nick Stevens pick. He provides a point of difference. Probably doesn't project as strong as Kolo or as good in the air as Henry. However, he projects as a high IQ player with good pace and decision making. We really lack decision making and pace amongst that group. I include Stewart in that group too. A player like POTENTIALLY adds something different we don't have if it works out.

Freo were a possibility, as were North and even GWS, but who knows. Just makes me sad that we traded our Future 1st, and lost Henry on the same night - a double blow

While I thought the price paid for the Holmes pick was a little high, I was pretty happy with the guys Wells targeted. All high upside, under exposed players. Guys will all the physical tools who will need to be given time. Don't know the players well enough to criticise or praise but like the theory. Don't know if we've drafted such a bunch of athletes in the past.

Agree with that..if we had traded a future 2nd not a future 1st i would have been happier just on a risk point of view but clearly his testing was fantastic and he seems like a ripper kid with a great attitude. Clearly we have prioritised kids with real athleticism and speed so we will see how that goes but it is a deficiency in our list. I really rate neales scope to become a genuinely good ruckman so i am glad to see us finally try and draft a decent u18 ruckman again..the list is crying out for that long term so while some might argue its better late than never at least we have done it.

Reckon we'll be going after someone like Merrett next year, to replace Sel. Country boy and leadership up the wazoo - be a perfect fit

Would of went in the next few picks had we not have jumped in.

Vardy was a ruck. Plus wasnt dawson simpson after mumford?

No simpson was before (2007) mumford was the same year and vardy 2009. We havent drafted a specialist ruck in the main draft since then (unless you count fort stephenson and abbott who were all picked up late in the ND as mature age players)...noting i count esava more as a forward than a ruck and DEK as a key back.

I totally agree holmes would have gone by 25 i just would have offered richmond essendons future 2nd and maybe a future 3rd or 4th i wouldnt have risked touching our future 1st..but i really like the pick its only the price im not a fan of.

Baldwin, Heath, Walsh and Trew not even getting drafted in the national draft, just goes to show how much of a sh*tfest it must have been trying to pick the good from the bad with little to no exposure

Be interesting to see if any go as rookies but there will be a lot of re-tread players taken as rookies so not many live slots.

In better news, we could get Bruhn and Fleeton back home in 2 years for a late 1st, as I reckon neither will get a game and will be happy to leave

Collingwood were never trading down until reef was bid it was too risky so we had no way to get henry unless you think we could have traded for freos pick (assuming gws wouldnt trade with us) we basically had no call on him.

Generally you have a point though but i really like neale and stevens as value picks.

Pies lost a lot of players and their first 2 rounds picks next year to do it though..that said they will get daicos for a discount next year.

Neale and Stevens alone would have been perfect, but the Holmes one is the one that just has me a bit offside - because as you said, we look to have given up too much for him.

It's just tough to swallow that Henry isn't coming to us when he literally made it all the way to 17...love the kid and he reminds me of Menzel (was taken at the same pick too)

A lot of this has been offset by Tanner Bruhn's reaction and his need for more development physicality wise, meaning he likely returns to us for a cheaper pick in just 2 years - which would even things out greatly.

My hope is that we've picked up these players tonight, and then in '22 when we have all our retirements, we go hard at Henry, Bruhn and Fleeton to come home, alongside a good draft hand and a decent FA. Long way away though. Neale eases the heartache a bit though - given just how good I think he'll be in the long run

I get all that but the way the draft order was we had no way to get henry..only richmond wanted to ship a top 20 pick out and he was never making it that far.

Bruhns interview was interesting..he didnt look very happy to be going to the giants did he?
