WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

Like all of yours?

Since 2010 every man and his dog has predicted our club would be down and out. We can't afford to bottom out, as soon as we do, the AFL will have us moved to Marvel. Being in premiership contention year in year out is pretty fun as a supporter and member of the club. I'd much prefer our position to many in the league.
I like the cut of your jib JohnZ, a little bit of positivity never hurt anyone.

It's interesting to me how little our defensive-minded coach values midfielders with a natural defensive side to their game. It's been such a clear weakness in our side and is the main intangible benefit to playing Danger forward. Parfitt and Guthrie have been two but I thought Fogarty could be the third. Yet my read is that we're prioritising keeping Narkle, who is our weakest midfielder defensively, over Fogarty. Maybe Stephens offers a bit.
Also could be as simple as - another team was interested in Fogarty & he was open to the trade, while the current talk is there's minimal to zero outside interest in Constable & Narkle

Trading Fogarty opens up a spot on our list, maybe the club thought that was as been beneficial as anything this season

In my view yeah. I can't remember who the emergencies were, Atkins, Sav, Zuthrie and one other? None of those are midfield options. Out of the side were Narkle (one-way), Constable (unathletic, out of favour), Steven (bad), Stephens (1st year)... am I missing any? I think Fogarty was the best of those last season.
Atkins was the midfield emergency, and the club seemed to prefer him to the likes of Fogarty & Constable

The 4th emergency was Close who would have been small forward cover

With Constable you're right but Narkle can be delisted, they clearly want to keep him (unless they still delist him, this is just how I'm reading the situation)

I agree with this big time. For a few years we seemed to play an extremely defensive defence and an extremely attacking midfield. That changed this year especially in the second half of the year and I think we looked much, much better for it. It particularly killed us in finals when our midfield got overrun or when they did win it guys like Danger and Menegola really butchered it under pressure and our defence couldn't hold up against the flood of easy ball coming in.

In saying that I reckon Simpson has a nice defensive game, Menegola has got a heap better and playing Blicavs around midfield helps immensely. There's also Atkins in the wings so Fogarty was still probably well back.

I will say that if Cocky plays 10-15 games next year i'll be ropeable, the trade was fair because he basically hasnt played for 2 years but ive got a bad Linc McCarthy feel about this one.
I’m interested to hear if I’m years to come if the rumors were true Cockatoo wasn’t going hard because he had already been offered a multi year deal at BL and didn’t want to risk injury and tearing up his own contract

How do you explain the way people have reacted to Constable's treatment? He wasn't a high pick.
Originally touted as a top 10 pick before the draft, and then he was still expected to go first round - maybe the fact he slipped down the order is contributing to how he's viewed

Such a shame the AFL industry is shrinking at a time where the armchair experts are growing in experience and confidence on list management that those in the role just seem to fail to see very clearly.
The flag seems to be further out of reach now the vital cogs of Cockatoo and Fogarty are gone lol.

If this was on Twitter, every bot response would be "Thats the final straw, I am done with the Cats and moving to Peru"

I dont know what it is but I got a real Bundy feel about Cockatoo this year, get the feeling that all he wasnt as well received by the club/players as he had been over the last couple, might be nothing but in the end it almost felt like he despised the club especially when we didn't play him, could be some bad blood there, will be interested to see if he thanks the club for everything they have done for him.

The Age reported on Tuesday night the Cats had offered Pick 38 in exchange for Higgins — a deal that wasn’t accepted by the Roos.

AFL Media reported earlier this week that Geelong was hesitant to give up “anything more than a second-round pick” for Higgins, who still has one year to run on his North Melbourne contract. Yet North reportedly wants more than a second-rounder in exchange for the 32-year-old.
Leave the bloke at North, turned us down originally as a FA and now we have to pay for the privilege?

I don't get what people's issue is with McCarthy.

Ok so he's on the field now for Brisbane.

When he DID play for Geelong, he averaged 11 touches and a smidgen under a goal a game and about 0.6 goals assisted per game. He had flashes of promise but his contribution wasn't massive.

At Brisbane he's gone up to 12 touches, his goals per game has dropped slightly and so has his goals assisted.

In those two years we have added Miers, who while frustrating at times is going a little bit better than a goal a game., 0/57 goals assisted, 15 touches.

there is no way known I look at McCarthy as 'one that got away.'

Why are you so sure of that?
He sees the future better than anyone else in the world..

And everything he says is always 100% fact and true.

NOT.

GO Catters

I posted and said some things a few pages ago regarding what I personally thought of him with my personal experiences with him.
I won’t miss him

Nah I think he was well liked amongst the group and his intentions (whilst known early on by the club this year) were pretty well kept in house.

I know C Scott was constantly bombarded with questions, but they were never going to go early with Cocky's intentions out of respect for the process everyone is required to follow. If there was "in season" drafting I suspect we may have known about this 6 months ago.

Cuts both ways as we've seen with Fogarty. If Cockatoo made it clear he needed a change - but was played anyway and blew his knee out - its no good for him obviously - but it kills any draft compensation we would be seeking. I think you'll find this goes on a bit behind the scenes.

Was Selwood ever defensive? I know Narkle is half the player, but I think he has the attributes to take Selwoods role.

I wasnt talking about stats i was talking about him getting on the park like Linc, Linc is an average player who couldnt even get fit for us yet he hasnt missed a beat in brisbane, if that happens to Cocky we are going to lose big time.

Higgins to Geelong
Pick 30 to Collingwood
Stephenson to North

Works for all
So Geelong pretty much pay pick 38+Fogarty for Shaun Higgins who turns 33 before he plays a game for us and finished 8th in North's BnF? That's horrible, borderline incompetent on whoever signs off on that deal from a Geelong point of view.

Unfortunately for you, North want more than pick 30.

This part annoys me.

The latest thing he's said is that he'll do 'what's best for the club' in reference to NM....

Does he even want to be at the Cats? He said no last year, and he's still talking about North.

I understand the value, but can we get blokes who actually want to be here, or at least give lip service that they want to be?
