I dont think people have done the math.
If we elevate close and atkins (which the club hasnt announced yet but i expect we will) then we only have 1 senior list spot (and 3 cat a rookie spots) or 4 senior spots if we trade clark kreuger and fort. But we already have 4 picks inside 3 rounds. Say you get a 20-30 pick for clark and 50-60 picks for kreuger and fort thats still 7 picks you hold and only 4 slots to use them. Yes you could delist someone like CC (and maybe re rookie him) but the numbers are tight-the best way to fix this is trade 2 or 3 of our R2s for one higher pick or one current pick and a future pick.

Plus the turnover is likely to be even greater next year..off the top of my head selwood higgins dahlhaus fort (if he doesnt go now) will surely go..any of rohan tuohy hawk and smith are old enough that they could..narkle clark CC would all be prime delist candidates. Yes you can fill spots with FAs but it makes sense to spread our picks across 2 years in case we have a big turnover next year.

Also if covid eases next year you could have a draft crop then in which its much easier to rate and rank the talent than this year.
Atkins and Close can be extended and stay on the rookie list for the next year can't they? Same as we did with Zuth and Simpson with the automatic upgrades.

Oh God we're trying to get Freos 1st aren't we?

Nah they wont trade it even if we offered clark and 2 R2s. If we are genuinely trying to get into the top 10 it could be with richmond at 7 (like we traded with them last year) although they seem to want to trade into the top 5 not out or maybe st kilda at 9..they want mid range picks and dont have them so they might swap 9 for one of our 2nds and a future 1st...gc at 3 are obviously shopping their pick but i doubt even our future 1st and 2 2nds gets near top 3 and even then they only need futures not picks this year as they have no list spots. So i cant seriously see us getting into the top 10 unless we were trading a big name player and not just picks..i dont think its likely.

The crazy Vossy in me looks at clark, three seconds, a future 1st and thinks, "well maybe"

It’s like when you walk into the casino and bet on black on the roulette wheel and lose. So you immediately increase the initial bet to cover and go again bc it couldn’t possible happen twice.

We deferred and bet on Essendon and GWS giving us picks #22 and #25 this year. Now we are going to go 3rd time lucky with the same capital + Krueger with Collingwood and hope it comes up black.

who told you my strategy !!

Wonder who we are after?

Not sure who it is we're after? But the name I've heard a few times that might help us get closer to top 10 picks is Menegola. Posted that last night.

If we want the collateral to get that high, then it will clearly involve player movement other than Clark and Krueger. This will be interesting to watch. Surely there's someone other than Knevitt / or Tom Brown they want, and that they think they need a top 10 pick for.

But people are suggesting trading our first 2021 pick (likely to be in the 20s for Clark) into next year. That makes no sense. The surplus picks will be in the 60s and beyond.

Atkins would have had to be elevated but the afl this year are allowing a 4th year for rookies.
Still i think we will elevate them..zuth and simpson werr different at that time as they were fringe players and not best 22.
If you look historically when rookies are best 22 we always elevate them at the end of that year-this goes right back to pods and happened with parsons etc. The only exception was us not elevating hendo at end 2020 but that was because he was so old we knew no one else would poach him. So i think its likely we elevate the other 2 and that affects how many picks we will use in this draft.

Trading a R2 this year for a R2 next year i dont see an issue with..as i said we might only use 3 picks anyway so if we dont trade out one of the excess picks they are wasted.

Wonder who we are after?

Im not sure who but if we did it it would surely on be live on the night (like we did with holmes) when we know what player is there..i cant see us doing it now.

I think you would only do it live on the night so you know who youre getting which rules out trading players it would purely be pick swaps.
I also dont see menegola happening he would have gone this year as an FA if he wanted to go.

Illogical. The surplus, if there is one, is pick 50 or 60-something.

We are also not going to be trading out a midfielder when we are getting thin in that area. People call for Menegola to be traded every year. It’s nonsense.

Wouldn't want a Collingwood scenario next year.

I dont think we will finish that low i think its a 7-15 pick (like richmond) but it would still be a big risk. As weve seen with holmes that can pay off but it can also backfire. Id rather trade up to just the teens with this years picks and not move the future 1st as we will need a full hand of picks next year.

Agreed on sam 100 % i was talking about why we wouldnt do it before draft night at all in my opinion i think we are just sounding out who might be open to moving their pick so if someone we want slides on the night we can move in the 5 minute window.

Illogical. The surplus, if there is one, is pick 50 or 60-something.

Its not about the surplus its about losing currency for nothing. Eg assume we have picks 25 30 32 34 52 57 and 58 and only 4 list spots then you lose the 50s picks so you may as well trade them for future picks to not waste them. This is exactly what for eg brisbane will do because they have about 5 picks but only 2 list spots.

Maybe - but a lot changes in 12 months. Including Geelong's approach to list management now that Hocking is in the chair.

12 months on (today) if club 'x' approaches you and says they have an interest in Menegola - and at the right price - then it becomes a different conversation. And that's all I've been told. Doesn't mean it will happen obviously, but it might be the path to getting into the top 10 on draft night. And if it means Menegola gets seduced by the go home factor, then it might result in a deal being done.

But on the basis of go home factor alone - let's hope it's not Mitch Duncan. If the WA clubs are involved.

Class player but wouldnt be my first choice.

Yeah... Dunno... U-16 Highlights package that can't be beat IMO.
Bloody good little player that i wouldn't say NO to. But depends what the club is looking at.
When the headline says.
The GFC looking at a top 10 pick i'd imagine that the targeted players would be in the 11-18 ranking/range that the club want to be sure to get.

Tom Brown

If we want brown we will try and get 13 off gws or 17 bulldogs or maybe 16 port..i cant see any chance of him going top 10..if we were truly going top 10 i doubt hed be the target.

We are in furious agreement then. I’m saying it makes no sense to trade 27 this year for a 2022 pick which is what I’ve heard suggested.
