It said 16 cats right not 16 cat? I reckon 2016 draftees. Reckon Narkle and Sav are out of contract soon?
It was 16 Cats.

It no longer exists so now I'm curious.

1. The counterfactual is that if you were never going to win the flag anyway you were better off developing your list for a tilt in a few years (no, not 'bottoming out', just not completely abandoning development of draftees for the sake of endless 'it's our last year' flag tilts).

2. No it isn't, I guarantee you a huge amount of what the club does is based on cherry picking the best stuff other clubs come up with.

what do you mean not bottoming out but developing?? Pretty sure bringing in the likes of miers O’Connor parfitt ratugolea holmes narkle Stewart as either drafted best 22 over the past few years or as new kids given a go, is developing without bottoming out ( know I have missed a few).

how can you possibly argue “never going to win the flag anyway” when we were scores level at 3qtr time of a grand final??

Anyone else get a push notification from the app saying "16 cats sign on" then no article?

I assume it's cats from 2016 and not 16 individuals
I don't get the push notifications from the app, but it's in relation to our AFLW side

I am a bit worried about next year the only over 30 that will be going is Jenkins..Then you can add Guthrie Menegola Dahlhaus so we could have 13 over 30s in our side and Stewart Cameron Bews Fort 29...With that many we have to go over the cliff it's just how far and when.

we can avoid it if we trade and go at RFA well, if we just choose to hit the draft it’s likely we will decline. Need to keep nailing all 3 avenues like we have since Scott came in.

Interesting bulldogs need to bank points for Darcy’s son. Given it will be pick 20 give or take, what would we be prepared to hand them for it?

Their R1?

Some are predicting Darcy may be top5. If so they will need 1500 points or so to match a bid. If they finish with a pick 18 R1 pick that is worth 985.

WE may have two or three R2's in the 30's... 600-500 range, It could be that we would trade 2 R2 picks for the late R1.

They will need points but they will also trade out a couple of players like Richards imo to pick up a couple of R2's.

The article says Selwood will sign a 1 year deal, Guthrie multi year and Hendo contract talks haven’t begun but club is open for him to continue. Also says Clark likely to ask for a trade.

Id say the club is more than open to Hendo staying. It’s strange that Guthrie didn’t sign after winning the BnF you’d think if he was staying that’d be the best time to get a great deal. I don’t think he’ll leave but it is curious. I really hope that Zac is not signed, he has improved but not enough to get another contract.
I’d rather give Darcy Lang a contract than Zac only a couple of years older and has looked good down back in the vfl this year.
Thurlow...

It seems the Dogs have another high pick kid aligned to the this year Sam Darcy is now likely top10 , perhaps earlier with some saying top5. Not something they have allowed for.

If so the Dogs who have their R1 pick and then nothing till a pick in the 70's will probably be on the hunt for picks at the end of the year.Trade out players or trade in picks.

If nothing else our three R2 picks will be appealing to collingwood and bulldogs as points

While the hype has been about Nick Daicos, his NAB League teammate and fellow father-son Sam Darcy has recruiters in raptures. Watch a full replay of Oakleigh v Northern.
Yeah grab lipinski Off em cheap. he’d walk into our ones, can’t believe they aren’t playing him atm.

We seem to have a bit of trouble recently with getting our younger mids to get fit enough. Other than Parfitt and O’Connor they seem to not be able to run out games or transition well enough.

Training issue with our trainers or coaches?
Problem with getting players outside the elite early first round in the draft?
Or attitude problem with the players?

If your full time job is to be an athlete I don’t think there is much excuse to not be really fit.
I doubt its the coaching. The club has some of the best runners in the comp.

Endurance is down to application. Anybody can train their body to run 17kms at decent pace in a game. It just takes lots of kilometres, hurts, and mostly has to happen in their own private time - not under the watch of coaching staff.

Another NON Father Son ..... Just like Brown not enough games. to qualify for us ...

Greater Western Victoria Rebels defender Sam Breuer recorded the highest SuperCoach score of the weekend with 198 points in his side’s match against Murray Bushrangers.

Breuer, who turns 18 next Saturday, is the son of former Geelong and Port Adelaide player Shayne Breuer, who played 71 games for the Cats and 54 games for the Power during the 1990s.

The 183cm rebounding defender recorded 35 disposals, 12 tackles and took four marks against the Bushrangers.

Son of Droop

Fairly handy Ruckman making a go of it in the local league that may be worth a look

Two of those players were mature aged
Close was a rookie and had not provided anything like his current output at SANFL level, he was lucky to be drafted at all. Stewart was a 22 year old local carpenter when they brought him into the vfl and started developing him and then took 2 more years in the 2s for us before we brought him into the senior list. You can't say either were ready made when they walked in the door.

yes and developed immensely once arriving at geelong.

I think the key is being ready to develop and being inside a professional system rather than just playing footy while doing a full time job.

On age.. Close was 2016 draft. Was he even mentioned as a draft option. I can not remember. It shows how draft young often can be a two edged sword. Players brought in and spat out before the player is ready tackle the demands of AFL. Stewart seems a classic example. Now admittedly ..most players with the potential for high level talent like Stewart and Kelly are grabbed asap to avoid missing out on them. Close , like most , has his limitations , that he may or may not develop. He seems to has the right attitude to grab his chance. We will see.

What I'd probably say is Close and Stewart also show an undervlauing of players. Was Close really on worth a Rookie pick? Was Stewart really on worth pick 40 in his draft. While the RM's across the league continue to undervalue the matures that have been missed , I hope we continue to mine this resource. Whethers its internal from the likes of Egan and Stewart or elsewhere , especially this year. The kids in Vic compared to a 19 or 20 year old in wafl or sanfl may be significant.
