Wondering if Darcy Lang might get a look next year..

I could see at least one of the assistants being a recently retired player and that’s not a bad thing. Nathan Jones, Shaun Burgoyne, Eddie Betts or could even see Jenkins taking a role. I am keen for change and not promoting more mates of the club. But listening to the way Jenkins has worked with the young players and his attitude in the vfl I think he could make a good coach or development/welfare person at a club.

He was the only one making an effort during the PF to be fair. Ideally you would bring him on for either the first 5 mins or the last 5 mins of a quarter because he still gets in hard and makes good decisions. The issue is he can't do it for 80% of the game any more.
Dangerfield tried his guts out.

Don’t strawman, almost nobody is being that harsh. I have not seen anyone calling for Tuohy, Hawk, Smith, Duncan or Guthrie to be shifted on.

Burgoyne took a role at Port

You took September off from watching the footy? Melbourne treated him with contempt.
Melbourne treated every Geelong footballer with contempt, with the exception of Dangerfield, so don’t single Selwood out. He was named Geelong’s 3rd best performed player behind Danger and Smith.

I just saw Selwood came 4th in the Geelong Board MVP in 2021. I guess we put that down to posters with no clue giving Selwood votes?

Selwood's 2021 was much better than his 2019 or 2020. People are talking about finals performances like we didn't get annihilated on every line in both losses

The comparison to Nathan Jones is a funny one. Selwood carried a team to top four finishes, Jones carried a team to wooden spoons. If Jones didn't play for Melbourne he wouldn't have gotten close to 300 games. Selwood has earned every one of his and will earn another 20 injury allowing.

Feels like Aaron Black will be that guy whenever he doesn't want to play VFL any more. Would take Burgoyne.

Yeah, gotta admit I called Selwood cooked based on his finals form, but on reflection he was actually pretty good for most of the year. Reminds me of Ablett in his second last year.

He's contracted for next year irrespective of any of our opinions, so he's obviously going to play. I think the most obvious difference is that he should be rested fairly often throughout the year - whether he wants to or not - to ensure he doesn't fall in a heap again come September (should we make finals).

I'd like to agree, because I love Sel like any other Geelong fan, but the reality is harsher. We can't have a team where players need to be rested through the season in order to get on the park in Sept. Maybe on performance he still is in the top 3 or 4 midfielders in the team. But he is also a standard setter, and standards have been dropping since about 2017. The fact we are having a discussion about whether he has gone on too long to me says it all.

The issue isn’t that he was beaten - you are correct that in some senses he held his own and did win a fair share of footy.

The issue is how he got beaten when that happened. Players just ran around him - that didn’t happen three years ago. It’s part of a broader pattern of how to beat Geelong - run in waves and use your athleticism.

Don't necessarily disagree, but as I pointed out - he's contracted for next year regardless of what you and I think. So we might as well keep him as fresh as we can and hope he can deliver the goods.

I don't think the alternatives are realistic (VFL all year or paid out) or optimal (repeat of this year).

No that’s only when Blicavs polls votes and wins and it doesn’t suit the agenda.

Worst part looking back on it he was probably right and was talking about Gary Jnr
Well that’s what he claimed anyway
That was just a convenient cover for his claim imo. What was the big mystery about that? Everyone knew he’d probably come back at some point. And he kept claiming the mystery mid for years before he came back. It was like it was just a reason to use, to claim his mystery mid thing wasn’t an absolute load of crap.

And then he left and hasn’t come back, after a few people called him out on it (if i remember correctly).
